Nevadans?

I was behind 7 pages and even with super fast skimming my battery is dying now! So I have to hurry this up! Repeater got us a couple bars but still no internet service, the signal is not strong enough. :(
I am looking to make pickles, many of the recipes suggest grape leaves... does anyone in the Reno area have a grape bush that I could snag some leaves from?

Update:
FOUND SOME...

Never heard of grape leaves in pickles. Let us know how they turn out.

The Wyandotte roosters are such sweeties!

Awwww...
Sunny, I hope you can find another helper. I'll let you know if I have this next Thursday available. The client on that day sometimes cancles, sometimes doesn't.
Thanks Missy! We are steadily getting stuff done but we are moving my Dad in this weekend so nothing will get done til next weekend.
I so hope Steve gets better. I still feel horrible not being able to help you both.
Oh gosh no!!! Don't be silly! I'm never posting for help again if it's going to make anyone feel bad cause they can't help! :(
Jose has been applying for a bunch of warehouse/stocking type jobs now that the kids will be starting kindergarten at the end of the month. keep your fingers crossed.

He's been out of the workforce for 3 years so it's challenging getting back in.

Hope Steve recovers quickly, Sunny. I'm sure he's worn out from all the work of moving.
We will keep our hopes up and our fingers crossed for Jose to get a job quickly!!! Steve is feeling better already. Thanks!

Yeah I immediately noticed the purple tomatoes at Missy's place. My next project is definitely going to be the hoop house. I need to get my plants started much earlier (amd keep them going much later). I have some Cherokee Black seeds that I would love to try out.

What is the "Territorial" site Missy? (Just what I need - another gardening website to buy stuff from

)
I was amazed at those little black(purple?) tomatoes too!

Hi all!

Been enjoying the tales of crop growing.... Right now my tomatillo is trying to hang on, but the peppers are doing great and I cannot believe I actually have a couple of tomatoes on the mystery unlabeled plants.... They're kind of heart shaped almost like an oxheart tomato (I do not think they're romas). Time will tell.

Thought y'all might enjoy the following, especially those with ag endeavors. It's gone viral and is one of the fun ones and IMHO the best of the week:

enjoy!
HAHA! Funny!!!
Oh and by the way, my Olive Egger finally started laying this week...!!!!

and the color is!!!!!!........

...(drumroll please!)....

GREY. a very dreary shade of grey.

(oh here i am in between a pretty white, brown, and blue egg...how dreary i look.)

The lady must have not known that it takes a few generations to create an olive egg, and sold me some stupid expensive chicks from an F1. grrr!!!! I hate when people dont know what theyre talking about! I guess i should have asked more questions. I suppose ill just try breeding greggors to this bird and see how that goes.

how anti-climactic...
Bummer. :(

I just ordered two Add-A-Motor door openers for my coops. We can't go away for the night because the chickens need to be put away. My parents live next door but they go to bed before the chickens do so I hate to ask them to do it. Plus, we have to make an extra trip out to put them away also. We have horses so we feed them earlier and then have to go back out to close the chickens up. Can't tell you how many times, right before I fall asleep, I remember that I haven't closed the chickens up! I'm sure you guys relate.

From what I've read, people are very happy with the Add-A-Motor and I found them on sale for $74. I didn't order the timer, figured I could get that local and I think my husband has some 12V batteries to run them or I'll get those local too. Also interested in the solar chargers. These aren't as expensive as I thought.

A fellow BYC member has some of the Foy setups for sale but I only need the motor and timer and she has the doors too. Even used, they're out of my budget and I only saw one comment that was somewhat negative about the Add-A-Motor and that was because their door was too heavy for the motor rating.

Anyone have any experience with this product? I'm SO excited to get these. Having to open and close the coop and rely on someone to do it when we're gone is the only thing I can complain about chicken keeping.....well, that and having too many roosters....
Let me know how they work for you! I want these too!

No time for spell check. Forgive me all! Oh and another get together sounds awesome!!!

It looks green to me.

Hey Lacy! There's a whole thread about it over in the Meat Birds section: Fermenting Feed for Meat Birds. There are huge benefits to using it. Fermenting ups the protein content by 12%, so they eat less of it. Also, the birds get probiotics which makes them healthier overall plus makes their poop like regular chicken poop instead of the diarrhea you usually get with birds fed a high protein diet. If any of you have ever done the Atkins Diet you know what I mean!

Basically it takes away all of the negatives normally associated with Cornish X. Also, don't feed them free choice after the first week! You are much better off to feed them every 12 hours. It cuts down on things like the leg issues and abscesses you hear other people talk about. Plus the meat was very lean - just enough fat in it to keep it moist while cooking.

ETA: Where did you get your heritage Delawares?
Thanks for the info Ron. I got my Delawares from Sandhill Preservation. They select for early maturity and size (I believe is what they said). So you feed them this fermented feed from the time they are babies? I'll go check out the recommended post. Thanks again.

I imagine the auto-door openers become almost indespensible....like automatic watering systems for the yard. Once you have it, you wonder how (or why) you ever did without.

Are you getting the battery one or the solar one? I've seen both and haven't heard a single complaint from those that have them, other than having to engineer the doors a little.

So what color did you think eggs were before they had color pictures? They showed up grey, of course! Just think of it as a retro egg.....

Sounds like you've got the science of meat-birding down pat! I cut down on the lazy tendon mess with supplementing alfalfa and cottonseed meal for a calcium:phosporus ratio balance. I had bad timing and either didn't process my birds soon enough (and a heat wave would dispatch an awful lot for me) or I would let them go too long and -- gross thing -- the hearts were extremely encased in fat. Yeah, chickens get internal body fat like you wouldn't believe! I had one batch go so long that the hens started to lay....little pullet pellets....the tiniest eggs. BUT even going long, they were all pretty tender and delicious! Just wish I had gotten to them earlier before pouring all the feed into them.

Love, love, love the purple tomatoes! Really cool looking. How are they faring in the heat? I tried growing the white ones one year....not very appealing and even less so in salsa or cooking. They supposedly had less acid than their red cousins, but I was so off-put by the appearance (anemic food) that I never really quite enjoyed them more than once.
My favorite tomato is the German Stripe or a similar (Mr. Stripey or Pineapple). Big, yellow and red and yummy!

This morning, I moved Sour and her 6 remaining eggs into a nesting box that NOBODY uses. And I went out a few hours ago and found a new egg under here, from Original. Honestly, is egg-laying so traumatic that they have to use the buddy system? Like going to the ladies' room on a group date or something???

What happened to my post about the grey egg?? Did no one read it?????????????

Use that grey layer to breed back to a bird from a very blue egg and you will get LAVENDER EGGS! Sheesh people! Do you not know what makings you have there???

Oh scratch that, I had forgotten about how my birds got sick last month. better just keep a closed flock to be safe.

Well just went out to fill up waterers and feed and get everyone ready for bed and found Nanners dead. She was laying on a platform right below her usual roosting spot. I dont know what happened but she was already stiff. I cannot say how long she had been there. Markie is going to be really bummed. Poor Nanners. I hope it isnt related to the illnesses from last month. Everyone was treated and she was healthy as a horse yesterday. Maybe she was just angry with me for not letting her set that pile of 25 eggs that she had been hiding and decided to just end it all. that'll show me. well it did. Nanners
