Nevadans?

We just brought home a new hen and our roo charged her with his wings out and low and looked like he was trying to kick her or jump on her. I'm assuming this is normal establishing dominance kinda thing but when should I worry

The best thing to do when bringing a new bird into the territory of an already established bird if you aren't going to quarantine is to keep them separate in a way where they can see each other without having any contact for a few days. This can be doneby creating a pen with chicken wire, keeping the new bird in a dog crate, or whatever else. If they have time to get used to each other there is less of a chance of one of the birds getting seriously injured. Since mine free range I keep a small dog kennel in the yard for new birds to hang out in for a couple of days. Then my flock can see them and challenge them from the other side of the fence but can't hurt them. Usually they calm down after two or three days an everyone can be integrated. Good luck!

That really helped me integrate this last batch of chicks. I have the "baby cage," which is just a barred off area of the yard. When they finally got out in the yard, nobody messed with them. It's also a big yard though... well, big compared to a chicken run. Now the chicks still go in there once in awhile when they want some alone time.

I can already tell food prices are starting to go way up. This is week 3 of finding not-much-of-anything in the grocery store ads. I've been waiting for corn 9/$1 like it was last year, but I don't think that's going to happen. So here's what I found in on-sale-and-highly-preservable:

Mangoes 3/$1 at Smart & Final
White corn 4/$1 at Savemart
Blueberries 2lbs/$4.99 at Savemart
Tomatoes 3lbs/$1 at Marketon

Oh, and Pico de Gallo is already looking like a little gallo. He was standing up pretty tall today in the coop, and is pretty spunky with his mom. I'm thinking... I hope more marans eggs hatch.

I was thinking the same thing when I saw its upright, chest out posture. I love that look! I get teased for my love of roosters, but gee, they are SO magnificent when they strut their stuff

I wish they could all just get along

Was great to see you too!! So glad u like the Roo. He needed a new home!
I will let everyone know when the next swap is as soon as we pick dates.....
OMG Julie, I'm not sure what the funniest part about bringing home that Roo was. I was absolutely right about Ty falling for him, he named him Jethro almost instantly. Not sure why... so I'm pretending it's an NCIS reference. He spent his first night sleeping in our room on top the gun case!!!. The 5 new chicks I got were in there too in the dog crate, well every time the started cheeping loudly he'd fly down and go over to them making cute little comforting noises, and they'd be quite for a while. Th next day I put him in the dog kennel so he could be outside with some yard space. Well needless to say my other adult roo is only 7/8 months old, and he had to come challenge Jethro right away, it was so so funny. They're almost the same size and after one look at Jethro with his feathers up and jumping at the cage and my poor little roo ran for the hills. My leghorn girls have never much cared for our other roos anyway, but they think Jethro is the hottest thing in town. They're already squatting for him, and its like a light turned on for my other little roo. Now he's trying to mount the girls too. Only to be shot down at very turn.

Can somebody please help me? I don't know how many times I have deleted "threads" from My Profile page. It never stays deleted. On my subscription list, it says I have 17 subscriptions, which is what it should be but on my profile I have threads that I have contributed to ever since I became a "member."

Can anybody tell me how to get rid of all this excess baggage so I only have a short list of threads to go through to see if there are updates?

I appreciate y'all experience.

hope you get some pullets out of your hatch. my single comb silkie was pecking at one of the big wyandottes through the fence today. pretty funny to see him posturing.

i have been watching the corn prices too after you said you found 9/$1. i guess this might be as good as it gets.

Unfortunately, this format is still pretty new so most of us don't know how to do a lot of stuff in it yet either.

I don't know about out here but I heard on NPR that the drought in the Midwest is making sweet corn very scarce this year. One woman in Ohio they interviewed said that none of the corn in her family's 22 acre plot was over 3 feet tall and that normally it would be 7 feet tall by now. She said they would probably only get one harvest, at most two, rather than the four or five they would normally get. My own corn is doing well.

Well I stopped getting notifications again!

I really wish they would fix that.
