I was just looking at my 5 week old bantam buff Brahmas and most of the 8 look like girls! I have a second hatch of 9 bantam buff Brahma eggs from a different SQ line due to hatch tomorrow.

I ended up bringing home 10 roosters from the swap  .....3 BCMs(and a blue one too) a very sweet blue(and a black one too) Americauna, Lavendar Orp, black Frizzle, 2 rough yard roos mutts....the young ones are getting along fine but one of the mutts was mean and out for blood so he is living outside the run.  Anyway if anyone needs a sweet blue Americauana, frizzle or BCMs let me know(I know wishful thinking! ) well most will go to my friend in California to be sold by next weekend....  I have Call Ducks for sale and a trio of Very BIG Cayugas (out of good show stock)for sale too!

So I'm new to chicken owning and my husband definitely wants a rooster, therefor we are looking and researching the roosters!
How old re the roosters? And I'm worried about them being aggressive? Is that just luck of the draw? Some are some aren't?
My chicks are little (one week) so when is best to integrate a rooster?
Any advise is very much appreciated!

Depends on the breed and the source you get your rooster from (hatchery vs private breeder) whether they have a tendency towards aggression. Are you looking to get a large fowl or bantam rooster? My true Ameraucana, Wyandotte and Polish roosters have all been very sweet (none are hatchery birds because I have found them to be aggressive.) When you decide to add a rooster it depends on if it is for yard art or breeding towards the standard of a particular breed. You can get a better idea of what the rooster will end up looking like if you get one that is at least 3 months old. Then get one when your girls are 3 months old. That way there won't be problems with a breeding crazed adolescent rooster harassing your girls. Then they can mature together and the breeding behavior will be less dramatic when your pullets become ready to breed since they have gotten to know each other.

My parents will be arriving shortly for a week-long visit. We're going camping at Donner Lake Sunday-Tuesday. should be a fun time. Jose hasn't heard back from the job he interviewed for yet but he got a call to go to the walmart dist center on saturday for a physical test. I think that's a good sign.

I'm not a big fan of walmart but a job is a job and they sure do a lot of business so should be quite secure. when he worked for kmart he survived 2 different bankruptcies of the company.

Thank you! We are in it for yard art (great description) and we just think a rooster completes a flock. I'm mainly interested in non aggressive great looking bird. I like colorful ones for sure!
So do you think waiting until the girls are 3 mos and then getting a 3 mo rooster? Is it possible or advised to find a rooster in the 2 week range now? Again not breeding but just want a happy flock!

If it is just to be a beautiful protector of your flock you can add a rooster of any age

It is hard to tell what your rooster will look like (pretty color, etc.) if you get a mixed breed rooster chick before the age of 3 months, but if you get a purebred rooster you will have a better idea of what to expect. When deciding on a rooster take into consideration the breed your pullets are and try to get a rooster of the same size and a calm temperament. You want him to treat the ladies right

We've got a hen that appears to be taking a dirt bath. Is that just something they enjoy or do they do that for a specific purpose

Chickens LOVE dust baths and the purpose besides feeling good to them is to kill bugs that might be on them, like lice or mites. It does not mean they have them, it is just an instinctive behavior to control bugs. I had a light Brahma hen that loved her dust baths so much she purrred! It was adorable! Her name of course was Dusty

Rooster good choice! the one thing that is always in supply!

BTW aubry want a petey Jr. who is well mannored? iF not i can trade him in with julie, but i think she is fine with him not comeing back, but if he doesn't crow he can stay.
