Nevadans?

Seth I am so glad you have a nice coop. Congratulations!

Almost everything I've planted other than tomatoes had just up and died. I was so looking forward to a great garden. Hadn't had one since my husband died.

Oh roos! I love my roosters. I think the only ones that I've ever had a problem with were the mixed ones. Oh and Snack is even smaller than Lowrider, so I have two midgets out there that think they're Pittbulls. Other than that the other wacky one is my Mottled Jap roo. What a spaz! My AM roos are nice, but not overly friendly. My BCM roos are great, never had a problem with any roo of that breed. Cornelious is one of my sweetest. He's a Welsummer, like the name didn't give him away. my Game roosters are lovers. Not woth another roo, but they are great boys. My bantam Fav roo is a cuddler. I think picking out roos is so much easier though than hens. Especially when they are all feathered and the colors are there. I was going to mention though, that I got 4 pullets in January. All but one are now crowing. I know for sure that Breakfast is a girl. Snack I figured may be a pullet very early on, but Lunch and Dinner JUST got saddle feathers. Caught Lunch crowing and had to go find Dinner to check him and sure enough. So I now how 2 Bantam Cochin roos on CL. If the chicks you have are not color sexed, you may want to wait and see if there are roos in there already.

Quote: Oh I know Lacy. It's hard to know all the rules so early in the game. I only know about this rule cause we got in trouble for it on another thread. The mods let us know in no uncertain terms that it was not allowed.

seth if it looks like a roo it is most likely a roo :/ show me pics and I can tell you for certain. a have found that the showgirls make buck bawk sounds even if they are boys.

Missy if my broodies are still going strong i will let them egg sit for you. Ive given my two remaining broodies 7 new types of eggs to see which are fertile. Unfotunately my EE has stopped laying for now so im unable to try hers again :/

Does anyone knw if it is possible for an OE to lay marans colored eggs? I have a bird laying the same color as my marans but it is pullet sized. I could have very well been wrong about the grey eggs...oh sheesh ill never be able to type out this thought and have it be coherent...ANY TIPS ON THE FOOD COLORING VENT? I need to know who is doing what LOL.
I see this question was already answered. Good luck!
Hi everybody I'm new to this area and the board. Glad to see so many yardbird lovers in the Reno area. When I'm not on my phone I'll post pictures of the growing flock. One juvenile hybrid polish roo named Hendrix, 3 pro. Red pullets, 3 Cali white pullets, and a black orp/RIR pullet. The pullets are still a couple weeks away from the coop though
Hi JW! Welcome to the Nevada thread.

I'll add your name to the opening post now.

I agree! Great coop Seth!
So sorry about your garden Kim! It has been sooo hot where you are. It's just so hard on the plants.

So I'm new to chicken owning and my husband definitely wants a rooster, therefor we are looking and researching the roosters!
How old re the roosters? And I'm worried about them being aggressive? Is that just luck of the draw? Some are some aren't?
My chicks are little (one week) so when is best to integrate a rooster?
Any advise is very much appreciated!
Thanks!

You're in the Reno-ish area, right? If you want, I have two roos that I'll be rehoming. The first is a sweet blue silkie, about 12 weeks, but I don't know if he'd be big enough. The second is a chick that hatched a week ago, a black copper marans, who is already showing signs of being a roo. He's from Sunny's flock, and her roosters are big, beautiful, gentle guys. I'd want to keep him until at least the next hatch, since he's Tom Ka Gai's only baby right now, but the next ones are due to hatch next Wednesday.

Kim, sorry about your garden. Was it due to the heat, do you think? Mine had a hard time for a few days, and it's about to get hot again!

Seth, nice coop! Good job!

Elizabeth, have fun camping! Hopefully it will be nice and cool up there.

tolipgirl, I have a silkie (see above.) But yeah, I'm 99% sure he's a roo. No crowing yet, but I can see his walnut comb and he has more of a mullet than a 'fro.

Sunny, long time no see!

Poor Tater... I got home today to see the drakes cornering her and chasing her back through the doggie door. The ducks were by the patio again, and their two bodyguards were clearing the red carpet. Then after they chased her back inside, they were really investigating that doggie door, messing around with the flap. If they figure out how to get inside, Tater's really in trouble!

Oh shoot! I couldn't see that in the picture. I am sure you have been reading the Ameraucana thread that feathered legs are showing up periodically, even in the best of lines

I didn't realize when I got started with the W/BWs that there were so many problems to breed out

I just sold all but my best two hens, a blue wheaten and a splash. It takes hatching LOTS of chicks to get a few good ones.

If you really want to show I would suggest another breed since the W/BWs are a work in progress. I think my bantam buff Brahmas will be SQ since both lines come from breeders who birds win in some the biggest shows

Candy The chick infront is the one with the feathered feet. The only one without a DQ is the BW

Only 3 of the Belgian porcelain d'Anver eggs hatched out of the nine. The first chick to hatch started "Star Gazing" (twisted back neck) I did some research and found that this caused by the mother hen having a thiamine deficiency that is passed on to the chick. I also read that the outlook is poor but it is sometimes reversed by giving liquid B12 vitamins. I also read that the food that has the highest concentration of B12 is yeast. So I made up a slurry of yeast, and also gave this chick the baby vitamins Polyvisol and vitamin B12 liquid with some egg yoke which is also a good source of B12. The poor little guy had to be in a plastic food container with a washcloth because it kept falling over backwards. The big, fluffy, yellow Ameraucana chick would jump in and keep it company which was so sweet to see and really comforted this chick. Yesterday morning it was so bad that I looked up how to euthanize it humanely but just couldn't do it

I am SO glad I couldn't because last night while eating dinner I heard the little guy peeping and looked in to see him standing and pecking at some grain that was on the bottom of his container! I couldn't believe my eyes!! This morning he hopped out of his container to be with the other chicks! He still has the twisted neck off and on but is so much better. I don't know if he will make a full recovery, but I sure am hoping so since I have become very attached to the little guy!
