It's hard to be patient. It's always exciting waiting for those first eggs. soon you will have a flock of layers!aparently piont of lay is just a fun place to be cause there is a 6 chicken piont of lay party at my house with a chicken a month younger and 2 inconsictent 8 month olds trying to crash it
ETA: my minorca is squatting in a nesting box!!! She might win the race for the Ideal hatch!!!
yay for Harmony! Scary for the owls! We have owls in our neighborhood that we see regularly.I'm getting eggs from Harmony now, she's the duck we hatched on March 17th. She started laying at 5 months and 3 days. Amanda and Lacey are just enjoying themselves. I don't see any signs they are ready to lay eggs yet. Leroy still does not crow and John's enjoying him a lot so when he does start to crow I know we will keep him.
Seth, your flock will be fully laying before you know it. It's normal to get eggs without the shells on them at first. It stops once they get their laying down. Very nice picture show you had as well. I love your little show girl there!
Sunny, how are you doing? How's the pea hens?
Missy, I forgot to tell you we were able to get the pond and pump and stuff that day. My life was very busy for the past month. That's a good idea on the pressure canning you have there. Right now I'm having Tuesday's and Wednesday's off but that can change all of the time.
We had a scare a few nights ago. John and I were sitting outside with our DS & DIL when out of nowhere an Owl swooped down on the ducks. We were very lucky nothing happened to any of them. It was a Great Horned Owl and it's aim was just a bit high. It was sitting on the roof of the house and we didn't see it until it swooped down. The ducks ran into the run right after that and we locked them up. I never thought an Owl would be so brazen to even do such a thing while we were right there. I thought for sure something like that would happen when people were not around.

I would guess my speckled sussex might be the first of that hatch at my place, but we'll see. those jaers could surprise me. they still are tiny but they are a small breed. they are funny. the three of them always hang out together and they like to fly high.![]()
Sheryl, I would love to help you, and anyone else who wants to start!!!! I am no expert but I do have it down pretty well!Hi everyone! I'm back now. The kids just left a bit ago to go back home. I just had the best visit from them, it was better than I ever could have imagine.![]()
Jann - I have a pressure canner but I'm so afraid to use it. Perhaps you can show me how?
I'm going back 7 pages to catch up so sorry if I'm repeating anything.
You're telling me! It's even more difficult to show a picture that you've already uploaded! I wanted to show the bee pick on a Bee thread in another forum and there's simply no obvious way to do it. Arrrgghh!OK let's see if I can get a few pics to post.
I am really frustrated with this new platform! Adding pics used to be so easy! I'm giving up now before I throw something!!!!!![]()
Hey Sheryl - glad your visit went so well! I don't know what the regs are up your way but Carson City just relaxed theirs so you can have bees in town. Penturner has them and he is very close to downtown. Just a thought...Wow Ron, your bees are really great! If only I had the land to have bees!

can i borrow her as a role model? My sussex has been checking out the nesting box for a few weeks now. I expected her to be next, since Finger really didn't go in and check things out until today. Not as far as I saw, anyway. I'm really glad her first is in the box. Squatters: my leghorn, minorca, and sussex, so I'm assuming Kung Pao and Fried Rice will be next. I haven't seen Jerk the lavender ameraucana squat for me, but she's really flighty anyway, and doesn't let us even get close enough to hover over here.
