Arrgh! I was up early this morning (pre-7:00 a.m.) and opened the screen door to let in a little fresh air when what did I hear? Yep. Unmistakeable. One of my neighbors has chickens. Or, to be more exact, a rooster. It's either the folks kitty-corner across the street (outside of the HOA community) or my next-door neighbor. After all the rigamarole I went through trying to be legit keeping chickens and being denied by the HOA...sheesh & sigh. What's even more ironic is that I'll probably have the finger pointed at ME if the neighbors complain!
I can hardly wait to move.
(And, no, I'm not going to narc 'em out even though rooster-keeping is illegal in Henderson. Honestly, I thought somebody had let their hyperactive kids out at tad early in the morning to discharge until I opened the door and *really* listened)
vegaschick, I would love all of those if you don't mind typing them out. My pears should be in any day now, about 50lbs of them.
Now for the little ladies... with the 16 hens we are averaging 12 eggs a day, they are just now 6 1/2 mos. My husband actually sold some of these medium sized eggs to some fellow co workers and we actually earned some money this week. I am very grateful to these hens
Missy,
I have been pressure canning for a couple of years now. My kids love home canned pinto beans, made into "refried" beans. I have pressure canned green beans, corn, and I am sure other things. I have never canned meats, but would like to. A friend just learned how can tuna, she said it was very very simple. So, go for it... start pressure canning.
Check out this picture of my bee hive I took a couple of nights ago:
I sent it to the guy I got the bees from and he says it is called "bearding". He says it is a sign of a strong, populous colony just trying to keep cool in the August heat. They have pretty much filled both of those boxes (they're called supers - these ones are known as brood supers because the queen lays eggs in them) with comb, pollen and honey. The bee guy estimates there is 60-70 lbs. of honey in there.
ETA: Back to reading - only 10 pages back now!
Jann - I have a pressure canner but I'm so afraid to use it. Perhaps you can show me how?
