Nevadans?

Welcome to BYC Bcook0315! Glad to see you on here! I totally understand where you're coming from...this thread has a wonderful community of wonderful people. It is what it is... we try to compensate by using a local thread for trading chickens...though I'm not sure that children have been loaned out yet! I have gotten local hatching eggs from 4 different local BYC members through our Las Vegas thread. Come check us out when you can. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/666977/viva-las-vegas Also check out our LV Community page for local feed stores, member general locations and breeder lists. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/viva-las-vegas-community-page Happily we can be a part of both communities...we're just hotter and drier...generally!

Hope you fared well during the downpour we got today! I live on the east side and it got really hit, though my place is high and dry, the school I work at may be swimming for PE tomorrow as the entire field/basketball courts/and playground is underwater!

Uuuugghgghg!!!! You got RAIN today? We didn't see a single cloud out there! Well, I didn't see one, anyway. Have fun swimming tomorrow!

Ok, I'm awake, so ... here goes... First off, let me tell you that I kinda sorta made it up from a spiced peach jam recipe.

Spiced Peach Ice Cream

3 cups sliced peaches (about 4 med. fruit)
1/2 tsp unflavored gelatin
1 Tbsp lemon juice
1/3 cup honey
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/4 tsp cinnamon
1 cup heavy cream

Drizzle honey and lemon juice over peaches. Stir to coat. Let stand, covered, 2-3 hours. Separate syrup from fruit (should = 3/4 cup)
Stir gelatin into syrup, let stand 5 min. Warm just enough to dissolve the gelatin. Set aside to cool slightly.
Return syrup to fruit. Add spices. Refrigerate overnight or until mixture begins to set.

Whip cream until stiff and fold into peach mixture. Process in an ice cream maker.

Yield: 3 cups scrumptious ice cream.

I haven't made this in ages! I may have to do it again really soon!

HAH! Thanks! My classroom door looks out into the courtyard and the students were glued to it...they all suddenly had to go to the restroom so they could get a closer look! It was a great day to teach about the water cycle. To bad the focus was evaporation and not precipitation.

vegaschick I have added a link to the LV thread and member, breeder, feed store... page to the bottom of the NV member page. Folks pop on over to say "hi" on the LV thread as well. It's a great way to support our neighbors to the south of us!

vegaschick is trying to create some of the same resources in the LV area that we in the northwest have had so much success in and I applaude her efforts.

To be fair I would like to post links to pages with info from all over NV on one main page. I love the idea of posting events, local feed stores, breeders (we can post email addresses and breeds available but no prices etc. Stuff like that must appear in the "for sale" pages of BYC).

Kim has done something similar on the CA thread and it is a huge success! This is a great resource for many of us Nevadans as well since CA is an easy trip for most of us on here. I am fine with listing neighboring state's thread links as well. Kim has done this for us on her CA thread.

I would like to have different pages for different regions if there is an interest. Since vegaschick has already done so much work on the LV pages and it is so much easier to just post a link to these pages, than it is to try and gather info ourselves, what I will do is add a link to any page that anyone else creates for these purposes on the main NV page. I won't try to create new pages myself but I will link to them and, hopefully, organize a new main page with all the links in a more readable fashion (suggestions welcome).

The link to our existing member page can be found in post one of this thread but I warn you it needs help. For this new idea to work I need to change the link to a main page and from there we can post links to the member page and anything else we wish. This thread has expanded beyond my wildest dreams and it is time to spread the wealth so that all Nevadans can benefit from their local resources.

BTW any info you wish linked or posted on the main page (like a breeder page and feed store etc page for us northerners too) must be posted here first exactly as you want it listed on the main page. I will not try to do it all myself and I couldn't if I wanted to. But I can copy and paste with the best of 'em.

So shoot me your suggestions and info and links. Let's make this thread really work now!!!

Yummy!!!

OK I know some of you scan or skip long posts like the one above in post #15225 but please take a couple of minutes to read my post about the new main page I want to create with links to all other pertinent NV info.

I CAN'T DO THIS WITHOUT HELP FROM ALL OF YOU OUT THERE! Hopefully we can be a better source of info for the state of NV. We know by now what we get the most requests for. Let's make it easier to find this info and we will also avoid answering some of the same questions over and over again (like where local feed stores are). We can just have one page with links to feed store lists (and other supplies) we like in different cities.

OK we have some really sharp folks out there! Let's hear the suggestions! I can't include every suggestion but that is not what brainstorming is about. Right now I want ideas and PLEASE don't negate anyone's ideas till we are done. This will prevent others from submitting their ideas. Let's just gather some suggestions for now. :)

I'll catch up on your responses tomorrow night. I need sleep right now. If I didn't make sense above please tell me (I never know when I'm sleep deprived). Just be specific about what you want to know and I'll do my best to be clearer.

Thank you all! You are the best!!!

That's a great idea Sunny! I love when we can brainstorm! Let me know how I can help too. We all have our different feed stores we go to, like Elizabeth's there in Lemmon Valley. I tried to find it but to no avail. I would love to know where it exactly is located.

Welcome to the newbies! We love having you here and we love to talk (type without saying a word even though we say what he type in our heads)! See what you get to deal with here! Please keep coming back!

I went to the doctor today. I felt it was a waste of my time for the first time like ever! There was a doctor from the University of Reno there and all we did was go through my history and my siblings history. Spoke about lots of stuff. The worst part of it was when the doctor told me I must stay away from all dairy including EGGS! I looked at him like he was crazy talking like that. He said I have a very high rate for cancer and he must keep watching me for any signs. Okay so I'll only eat duck eggs since duck eggs are known to fight cancer because cancer can't live in an alkaline body and duck eggs are alkaline, chicken eggs are acidic food and acidic foods are linked to cancer. I can't stop eating eggs. My stomach doesn't really work as it is and eggs is what I mainly use for protein. Ugh! There was tons of more stuff, the appointment took over an hour but I won't really go into it all. I'm now writing down everything I eat until I go see him in November. For some unknown reason he thinks I eat a bit more than I can but I know for a fact he's wrong. John chimed in as well while shaking his head and told him, she only eats once a day and what she eats isn't much. Oh well. I know he's just making sure I'm not a piggy eater I guess. He's never been like this but he doesn't like that I'm not losing nor gaining weight, just maintaining.

Tonight the owl was in the neighbor's tree just about 30' feet away hoo'ing away. Leroy is sleeping in the doorway of the coop and the ducks are not saying a word right now. I don't blame them.

Goodnight Everyone!

What an absolutely wonderful idea!

Sunny is so right. There has to be particiation when you put together these pages. I have no one listed to be able to edit mine. I've lost info on my own, so paranoid, but I'm kind of watching and waiting before I ask someone. But collecting the information is the hardest part and without the other members that page would be blank. It's still a work in progress and there are things I have been visualizing that I will probably change, but it's so helpful, especially to new members or o people just getting started with chickens or who have moved and need to find a new feedstore, or want to know what breeds a member raises. It started as a list of members and then I got bored one night. LOL

I just started the feedstore section on the CA thread, so it's pretty small right now. I need to remind everyone to post their info so I can add it. I wanted to let you all know that Walt gave us a list of shows. It covetrs CA, NV, OR, WA, AZ and I think UT. So if anyone is looking for shows in those states, please take a look.

Also if any of you would like to add your breeder infor, please post your info and breeds on the thread. Make sure you let me know to add it, because I added info once and the poster wanted it removed, they were just mentioning their breeds.

I make extracts, tonics and I make usually Khalua for Christmas too. I buy Gilbey's which is I think the cheapest of the cheap. It usually runs $15 for 1.75 liters. On sale I get it for $9.
