Hi everybody...

I did something sort of nerve wracking today. I've been driving by this place in town that has a LOADED crab apple tree. Anyway, I stopped today and asked her if she was going to do anything with them. She said I could have the whole load!

So, early tomorrow morning, I'll be heading out with lots and lots of boxes to try and collect them all.

Now I need some crab apple recipes. I'll look back and find the one that was given for Seth but does someone have another recipe I can try? I've never canned crab apples before and I'm thinking the chickens will get the lion's share of them but I wanted to try my hand at some of them.

Hopefully they turn out alright!

Here's what I use for Canned Crabapples:

You'll know how many quarts you'll get once you know how much they weigh, it's about 1.25 pounds per quarts. I like to use the cinnamon hearts you buy in the store this gives the best cinnamon flavor without using oils. You can also add red food coloring to this so the syrup is extremely red, you are looking for the color of beet juice.

Wash the crabapples very well. Remove the blossom end and leave the stems on. Take cinnamon candy (as much needed to turn syrup very red), 3/4 cup sugar per quart and 2 cups water per quart.

Bring cinnamon candy, sugar and water to a full boil and let boil until candies are melted and water is bright red. Prick the skins of each apple and place into a quart size canning jar already sterilized and hot. Pour syrup into jar. Place seal and ring onto jar. Hand tighten. Place quarts into canner and process in hot water bath for 25 minutes.

Hey my post from last night isn't showing up! :(

Alrighty, here are Peach and Pizza!

Peach is kind of a gamble on gender, but at 5 1/2 months old id like to think my experience is on my side with my guessing of female. Her skin is very pink but i think peteys sisters skin is also sort of pink also. I am hoping the wattles are just going to stay that size and she will lay soon. My biggest guestimate fr female is that these two seem to be much smaller than porkchop, who is only a month younger. If i am right on this one then i am ultimate supreme showgirl master.
Sooooo cute Aubrey!

Sunny, those puppies are adorable! Have all your shoes been ripped to shreds yet?
Thanks Elizabeth! Shoes have so far been fairly safe it's the toes and ankles that they find irresistable (ouch). heehee

You have been super busy! Hope those folks appreciate all the efforts you're making to be a great neighbor!
Wow did they just make that?

The puppies are sooo adorable!
...
Yep but Macro had a loooong list of stuff ready to copy onto the map that was already on the member page. Kim has done a great job keeping folks very well informed on that thread!!!

Thanks Seth!

Ron here are two more for the map. While you are at it can you add the upcoming poultry show? It's on November 17th this year at 1350 N Wells (Reno Livestock Events Center) Reno NV. I think it starts at 9am? Can we use different icons for events vs feed stores vs garden supplies vs anything else we come up with?

PigTail we need a link for the show. I found one you posted about 4 weeks ago on BYC but it's no good.

Sheryl if you can give me a better estimate for how many red hots you use for this recipe I'll post it on our new recipe page.

I need to post some recipes on there too. I've got a million and rarely post them but have been shameless in using other's recipes.

Yep - I was already doing that. Feed stores have a green icon and Twin Cities (general supplies) has a blue one. What color do you want for the swaps/shows? If you want to change the color for the feed stores I can (green seems more appropriate for gardening supplies). I'll add those new places tonight (no time here at work

).

I have about 2 gallons of pear juice with a little lemon in it, no sugar added yet. It needs to be bottled up or refrigerated today. Free to the first person who can come pick it up.

IDK, red for events? *as in must stop here?* lol
Yeah I like green for gardening sites.

You're the best Ron! Thank you so much!

OK, I have started the official NV recipe page to be found here... https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/nevada-thread-recipes
It needs a lot more recipes and you folks are the best at providing great recipes so pony up now! You can repost recipes that have been seen already and/or post brand new ones.

Who knows? Maybe this will be a future fundraiser for NV 4Hers or something. :)
