Nice Sheryl! Where did you get your beef?

Gadsden asked me if I wanted to go in with him on 1/2 a beef. Of course I said yes. It's coming from Texas. The steer weigh's over 1200 lbs and it wasn't really expensive after all is done and packaged. I ordered my cuts a few weeks ago. Next year we are going to order from my friend who grows their beef in Petaluma.

I'm doing a lot better, thanks. Things are clearing up and the s. boulardii probiotic is doing it's job and my digestive system is a-okay.

Sorry I'm just barely answering. We got home from Tough Mudder about 5 minutes ago (10pm) and we're dusty and tired. I didn't participate, but I ran alongside the track to take pictures. So I still got in at least 5 miles of hiking/jogging.

Anyway, green apples are the best kind you can use for apple pie filling. You can make the filling then freeze it... just measure about how much you need for a pie, and put that amount in a freezer bag. Or a friend told me that she'll line a pie tin with plastic, freeze the filling in the tin, then take it out and wrap more plastic around it. That way, when she needs to bake a pie, she makes the crust then puts the frozen filling in the middle. There are also some really good canning recipes for pie filling.

Aubrey, if this is what my chickens got, then I think it's this bronchitis thing that goes around the neighborhood. Remember, all of mine recovered. And all are back to healthy laying status, including the welsummer that I almost put on Craigslist. There are so many chickens in the neighborhood that, if it is bronchitis, they're going to get it. It's too contagious not to get it. But it also has a very high survival rate. I've accepted that my chickens might get sick again. But they survived the last one (except the ones we chose to cull at first) and I'll do the same thing if they get sick again. So sorry you're going through this! I just about tore out all of my hair when I was going through it.

Sheryl, the recipe is out of my Ball canning book but is reprinted here: http://eatcheapandhealthy.wordpress.com/2011/08/15/steak-and-burger-sauce-with-plums/
A big difference I did: I didn't add sugar until the very VERY end, so I could cook it down longer without fear of scorching it.

Campinechickens, I really have no idea what kind of plums they are. They're tiny, hard, and super SUPER sour, even when ripe. And the trees have been here for at least 50 years. They're so sour that I can only use them in recipes that add a lot of sugar, like jams or chutneys. But they add a wonderful tartness to jams that I love, since so many other jams are just sweet.

Alrighty! The pen is finished! Finally! We also gave the girls a full coop cleanout. I mean i hosed that sucker down and everything in it. We hit the fresh bedding with dust for mites and rearranged it all to function best with our new pop door. Markie also built them a new perch for an added 5 or so feet. It looks really good! I took the advice about putting the feeder in the middle and also spread apart the waterers. Stacked the nest boxes and shazam, i think i have good function here!

the broodies really enjoy the new upper decker box!

and here is everyone last night on the new perches! They really like being up high. Love em!

Also I have some news....

Remember my Mille Fleur leghorn that went missing?
Well she came home.

She brought a cute lil cutie patootie with her! I heard the loud peeping this morning under the deck and then I saw her wandering around the yard..I was expecting this little white thing but out popped a super fluffy little grey baby...a mini porkchop!!!

I honestly could not possibly think of a worse time for this to happen. And I think the vaccinations i have are for chicks 6-12 weeks. (no?) I just hope Flora keeps it away from the flock long enough for them to get better. *sigh*

I love your setup! Very nice coop, and the nests are just adorable. I'm glad your hen came home, with chick in tow.

well I didnt want to risk the baby getting sick so mark and i decided to pry apart the deck and find the nest. We were able to catch the spitting screaming hell-broke-loose mother bird and found another brand new hatched baby under her! yikes! We moved her and the babies into the garage in a little "secret room" that we have...and yes i didnt have the heart to throw away the rest of the eggs so we moved the other TEN eggs she was sitting on with her. Sheesh i was NOT expecting this. Remember when i said i wanted one or two more chickens? SHEESH!! Also remember when i said NO MORE CHICKS??!?!. This was really unexpected!!! ghah! Ah well they are EXTREMELY fluffy and adorable.

Sooo...in about six months who wants some nice delicious porkchop roosters for dinner?!?!?

love the set up aburey !!!! and it is so FLUFFY!!!!!!!

Well if anyone wants my crabapples just ask my parents said they don't want them rotting on our lawn so someone can have them.

so cute! I like how you're assuming that they are roosters already.
