Nevadans?

sounds like some good food everyone is making. I made a family favorite tonight--it's a salsa verde with chicken and swiss chard served with corn tortillas. Yesterday I made chicken pot pie. That is a major comfort food for me--One of my favorite things my mom would make for us growing up.

I got tons done today cleaning up the gardens and back yard. I put partially composted chicken manure/shavings in all the beds and mixed them up so they can finish composting over the winter. I'm wondering if I should put tarps over the beds to help heat things up. good idea or no? I plan to keep the beds moist and stir them up from time to time as I can over the winter.

I finally cleaned up all my miscellaneous wood and stuff from all my building projects. I have a little bit more to put away but it's looking a lot better. less junk yard looking

I got lots of leaves raked up and put them in the chicken run. they were having lots of fun with that. And a major score for the chickens, a friend offered a bunch of bruised apples from their tree as well as some pumpkins. So we picked those up this afternoon. She's kind of picky so I did see some apples that looked pretty good to me, so I may be snagging a few to make some apple pie filling for the freezer. She had a bunch of egg cartons for me too. she doesn't want to eat our eggs though. she's funny, she likes the sterile white supermarket eggs and is grossed out by our back yard eggs. maybe she'll come around eventually.

Oh I used to make these a lot! The kids adore crepes with just about anything in them. Well I never tried the gluten free crepes. OK what are African burgers? I'm trying to picture it but all that's coming to mind is different kinds of meat. And I just sampled the teriyaki chicken. OMG! I added a bit of pear juice cause the soy sauce was still leaving it too salty. Now it's fantastic. I hope Steve gets home soon so we can eat.

African burgers are made with meat and have a LOT of cayenne and red pepper flakes. Some onion, sugar, garlic, paprika, chili powder, bread crumbs, and egg for binding. They're steamed in their shape, then soaked in BBQ sauce until ready to serve. Sahara served them on gluten-free bread with a red cabbage slaw on top.

Just looked up Bragg's Liquid Aminos. Very interesting. Does it taste just like regular soy sauce? By regular I mean like Chun King (La Choy). I don't like the kinds that taste like wine. My immature palate and all.

It's only soy, and it's not fermented. So it doesn't taste like wine at all, in my opinion. Just the dark, salty soy taste that you're looking for. I like La Choy as well. Actually, I like Kikkoman the best because it has such a rich taste, but we can't have that here.

I think putting tarps over the beds for the winter is a really really good idea! Then you can guarantee the manure is all ready to go by spring. Then you can probably put in stuff like carrot shavings or old steamed vegetables (stuff that breaks down fast) and still have it work its magic all winter.

Did you make the salsa verde with tomatillos from the garden? I picked all mine and put them in the freezer, where they're waiting until I have a bit more time.

I wish, but my tomatillos were tiny, tiny so unfortunately, no. I have never had luck with tomatillos getting mature here. I just need to stick with tomatoes, zucchini, lettuce and a few other things that i can actually grow. of course i say that every year and every year I can't resist planting peppers and tomatillos and other tempting things. maybe if I actually construct some buckets I can grow peppers successfully.

I will pick up a few more tarps, then for my beds.

can't wait until my kids can make meals for us. they like to help cook but aren't quite up to doing everything solo. Laila makes a good egg salad, though.

Haha! I hope she never sees the conditions of those commercial egg ranches! She'll never eat eggs again!!!

Those burgers would be way too spicy for us!

Kikkoman is the one I don't like because it tastes like it has wine in it. I told you my palate never matured. Seriously, it never did. Or maybe I just have way too many taste buds.

My tomatillos didn't get mature, either. I just picked them green, and they'll make a nice tart salsa. Actually, my heirloom purple tomatillos that volunteered from last year did lots better than the Mexican ones that I started in March. The seeds sprang up everywhere I hadn't set down red plastic, and I could have had a full bed of them if I wanted to. (I didn't... I wanted tomatoes there.) So most of the tomatillos in my freezer are from the purple ones. Which don't actually get purple until the sun shines on them, and just on the outside.

Laila and her egg salad are quite a bit earlier than my kids. I think I started teaching mine to make eggs when they were 7 and 9.

I love it!!!! I love reading people's posts on Facebook and snickering at what they're actually saying with misuse of commas and punctuation.

We LOVE spicy over here! When my kids say they don't like spicy, they're actually saying that they don't like something that is marked as "spicy" within an actual ethnic restaurant. Just about any food made for an American market is way too bland for any of us. I've had people come over who couldn't eat my food because it was too spicy, and my kids are gobbling it down. But I do keep about 5 different kinds of hot sauce for Russ, because he's a little masochistic with the spices.

Hey, Nevadans! Just one political observation here..... In a mere 36 hours we'll awaken to regular TV commercials about actual products! When was the last time you recall one of those? DH and I actually turned to WGN (Chicago station) just to avoid all the mudslinging.

But -- uh-oh -- probably not normal commercials for long because we're diving headlong into the Christmas commercialism season. "Ch-ch-ch Chia!" anybody?

We now return you to your normal and usual programming.....

Not to mention the phone calls. The last count on phone calls was 18, just for today from 3pm to almost 4pm. Thank goodness for caller ID. Don't forget the people ringing your doorbell asking you to go vote. It's been going on here far too long. I'm so ready for this to end! I'm very thankful I don't live in Florida. There's so much going on there right now. My sister has removed her house phone. My father and other sister did early voting and left the state for a mini vacation in Myrtle Beach. One of my Uncles also got rid of his house phone as well. Friends are fighting amongst themselves because they believe in different candidates and are no longer friends. What a crazy election we are having.

Today I'm thankful for living with a lack of technology and a rather hick-within-the-city lifestyle. So much PEACE!!!

Just when I was starting to miss TV, you come on here and thoughtfully take a moment to remind me of how blessed we truly are. Thank you!

Ahhhhh... This year I sent all political calls to an extra cell phone (my Mom's old phone, which we were paying for through our family plan) when we registered to vote after moving. It has been very peaceful around here since that phone is rarely turned on. Nobody comes knocking, out here in the boonies, telling us to vote either. We already voted last week during early voting so it means nothing at all to us at this stage.

Haha! I guess that makes us country hicks since we don't live in city limits. Weird that I am so at peace with that label. heehee
