Nevadans?

How exciting! I can't wait to see the chicks! I am sure you are going to get some awesome babes out of your pair! His lines (Catt x Paul) work very well with the Foley lines your hen comes from
highfive.gif

I'm excited too. I'm hoping for a really quiet pullet so Elizabeth can have another one since she gave me the hen. I really can't believe how a rooster can be so strong and yet so sweet. He doesn't like us to mess with the ladies but he still lets us.
Oooh, you both need to keep us updated with pics!! I love this type. I only have Headcase, haha, and he doesnt breed. He's a huge pet though, so we're cool.
Sheryl, how are your ducks?

The ducks are doing great. I'm getting ready to hatch some more to take to John's cousin. The only issue I had last year was the show quality was poor but the egg laying is so amazing. We kept track of the eggs last year, we had over 500 eggs between 2 ducks and 1 duck that died, she only laid for a bit.
Awwww! Warm fuzzys guys ! Thanks you for the encouragement .

Jacque at Gary
Farms came highly recommended so I went for it.

Nasco shipped my bator ups and I received it in 24 hours so its running at temp like a champ waiting on those eggs.

It's been a few years since I hatched, the kids are super stoked!

What fun hatching chicks! Enjoy the moment.

I am breeding bantam wyandotttes so i am studying up on bree standard alot I LOVE the breed!!!!!

I can't wait to see pics of your little ones. Are you breeding the silver laced bantams?

Last night wasn't so good. Even with the meds I couldn't get to sleep until after 5am. I thought the pain would ease up once I laid down but that didn't happen. It was a very rough night last night.
sad.png
Hopefully it's temporary and will ease up soon. Sorry to whine. I got 1 and a half hours of sleep last night so I'm not feeling real chipper.
I don't remember what you said was the reason for getting shots like that but would a soak in a hot bath before bed help?

Chicharo is back to snuffiness and wheezing again.
sad.png
He just can't kick this infection. I'm taking him to the vet again on Monday. he's due for his regular vaccinations so we'll see what they say.
What a beautiful "head case"! We have a black austrolorp, nothing that exciting since he's all black, but he sure is great at keeping the girls in line! He doesn't like me sometimes but I pick him up anyway!
So random question about yards...so I guess relevant since its outdoors/gardening...we are looking at landscaping our front yard, we are "new" construction lol! 9 YEARS ago! I really want to get a front yard started/done, does anyone have some affordable landscaping company recommendations? We had a couple company's give us some quotes last year...lets just say the word "Affordable" was not in their vocabulary! Lol. Any suggestions are appreciated, I'm in the south Reno area!

Keep those chicken pics coming and I'm going to do my best at NOT getting chicks this year!
good luck on finding a landscaper. we re-did our front yard ourselves. it was not new construction so there was a tree and some beds already. we removed the grass by ourselves. i designed a xeriscaping area across the front. later we added in some more shrubs and more low water use plants closer to the house. It was a lot of work and isn't really totally done the way I want yet. Boy is it back breaking work! Just the thought of digging a hole for a shrub makes me want to take a nap. our soil is horrible hard, rocky clay.

I am also trying not to get chicks this year! I'm remembering all the dust and the mess of spilled water and the heat lamp hassles so I'm not tempted.
Guess where we were tonight... (Hint... it was someone's first band performance.) Oh, did I just give it away?

that's great! she looks so grown up!
I'd like to know the opinion on ideal hatchery for layers?
I was very pleased with my 2 orders from ideal. My first one was 100% pullets as ordered. The second order I got 2 males by accident in the sexed ones in my part of the order; the silkies weren't sexed. I ended up with a free extra silkie. 1 of my 5 silkies was male. Their customer service is very good.

OMG, I'm in love, love, love with this little puff ball! We're these chicks bred to be small or was she just a fluke? Oh, and welcome to the thread. I'm from Northern CA but love my peeps here!
I can't remember if I shared here that I got a Brinsea Octagon 20 incubator with the humidity pump (and turner of course), for my birthday!!!! After my experience a few years ago with the Little Giant (good hatch but required constant monitoring, around the clock during lockdown), I swore I would never hatch again! I started breeding Polish and EE's a couple of years ago with broodies, last year I had 5 and sold some of the chicks and I started getting people who want chicks this year. I realized that if I wanted to sell some chicks and actually work on my breeding program, I really couldn't manage it reasonably with broodies so this year I told my husband I wanted an incubator. He said fine but get a good one! He said he didn't want to see me going through what I did with the last one, he wanted me to enjoy it. What a guy...no wonder I've kept him around all these years!
love.gif
I was hemming and hawing about the extra money on the humidity pump but after talking with Sunny and others that felt the same hesitance to spending so much money on an incubator and my husband said just get it, I spent the money. I have to say that every time I hear that little thing turn to adjust the humidity I giggle! I'm so tickled that I have nothing to do! I can't wait to see what type of hatch rate I get!

Here's a picture of the eggs I set. After help from Ron and Chickee, I was able to fit 25 eggs. My first layout I only fit 19!
5 Blue Copper Marans (these will be Olive Eggers because I only have an Ameraucana roo) I plan on getting chicks from Sunny but am looking for an adult Black Copper Marans from a nice dark egg so I can hatch pure Marans sooner! Soooo addicted to this dark egg!
4 Polish - Various colors
16 Easter Eggers

I know what you're saying. We've been DIYer's all our lives. Come from a family of builders, we've built our own houses, barns, coops, retaining walls, ponds, etc! But we're getting to the point in our lives when we're considering that maybe we can't just do it all anymore and maybe we should defer some of the heavy lifting. Hope you find someone reliable, I know that's a whole issue on it's own.
My husband and kids are Kickapoo. We have to laugh about the name of the tribe, it's not bad enough our last name is Funk! I would like to learn more about the tribe. My husband is only 1/4 but I'd like the kids and grandkids to know about their heritage.
Awe, she looks so grown up~ I played the clarinet too!
congrats on your new incubator! can't wait to see some chick photos.
You'll all be very proud of me. I went to the Orthopedist today. My GP wants me to see someone in town first that specializes in non-surgical treatments so I went and had ten shots to the spine today. Time will tell if the treaments help but he wants to try a combination of stuff so I'll keep my fingers crossed. I was just relieved to not have to have another Discogram (sounds fun but trust me it really isn't!!!).
I hope this works for you.

sorry you've got so much pain to deal with. How brave to get 10 shots.
Here is a slide show movie I made of my chickens.

Enjoy!
nice looking flock!
Sunny dawn! I enjoyed looking over your list of members. Thank you kindly. It's encouraging to know your neighbors.

Now for my panic attack vent:

1) I decided to purchase welsummer hatching eggs from Gary farms ALL the way in Georgia. Everyone else had a stinking wait and we'll I don't much have patience ...

2) found my bator dusty on the shelf with little holes in the back

3) speedily ordered a new bator on rush delivery cause the eggs will be here in two days

4) was told by my husband that the stinking storm is coming in early . ( snow snow snow)

So, lets all pray that the eggs don't freeze, the bator is not delayed, the post holds my eggs and they don't put them in that ugly blue open air bouncy jeep. Look I have enough new gray hairs this year!

Thank you all for your ear.

for those eggs! sounds like if they make it, they are really good stock.
I'm up listening to a loan chick peeping at the other eggs. He's driving me crazy, so I decided I'm just make random posts all over the forums. This chick was pipped last night or early this morning when I was going to set the 83 rggs I decided not to save for the Easter hatch. Yeah right! Took him till just a while ago to come out and play and now I'm up to 124 eggs sitting all over the lace, waiting to go in. We're getting lots of wind and rain the next 3 days, so they'll all probaby stop laying now, but if not.......I'm goona have a whole lotta eggs to try and hatch for Easter.
wow! that's a lot of eggs. hope you got some sleep.

Thanks Sheryl

How is that big, beautiful, sweet rooster of yours doing? Thinking about hatching eggs from him this year? I just hatched some eggs from his brother and have a few more eggs from him in the incubator. Love the wide heads and short beaks on them. Color is looking good too. I am excited to have some splash rooster chicks in this batch. One will be for me and the other is promised to a friend.

Here are some pictures of the two splash candidates. They are both super friendly. Love that about the Wyandottes!

very nice! love the splashes!
We are getting our backyard done as we speak! Interviewed 4 companies and went with Little City Landscaping.

we'll look forward to some photos!

that is so sweet, sheryl. would my husband notice one more chicken out there? probably not.
gig.gif
he's not super observant on that front.

Does anyone know where I could get ahold of Afew bantam ameraucanas? I really don't want to mail order them after my last experience :/ also, does anyone have experience with them getting along well with silkies? Thanks in advance :)

So sorry about Chicharro Elizabeth! :(
Sunny, what's wrong with your back?? I hope it feel better, whatever it is. I had shots, having them in your spine was probably extra horrible.
hugs.gif
I have degenerative disc disease. I was diagnosed at 23. This disease is fairly common in folks over 60 but pretty unusual in a 23 year old. It's genetic. My son has it too but his problems started at 15. I worry about him a lot. I have had 3 vertebrae fused together and I have cages screwed into my spine above and below the fusion to hold evelrything in place. However fluid is still leaking from my spine into the surrounding tissues there and in 2 other places along the spine. I've let it go way too long without further treatment. The shots themselves were not a big deal but the pain afterward was intense. I guess some people get instant relief and for others it can make it worse. Worth a try just in case but it looks like a failed experiment for me. I am feeling a lot better today but not as good as I felt before the shots. Not sure I'll be able to dance at all tomorrow night... Steve and I love to dance.
Sunny, so sorry to hear you are in such terrible pain!! :hugs Did the doctor say to expect this after the treatments? Hope it is just temporary! Were you able to find the Polish eggs you were looking for? I know you like the LF but if all else fails I have a small supply (1 rooster over 3 hens) of bantam buff laced Polish eggs now. I am going to do a test hatch soon.
The Doc wants to try a few things before recommending more surgery. He doesn't know if any of it will work but I'm game for avoiding surgery if I can. No we got a few Polish but they were almost all boys. Not interested in bantams though. Steve wanted the polish but has now gotten interested in the other fowl like the peachicks. Thanks for asking. :)

COOL!!! :D

That's what I've always done but the Doc says to do the opposite. He has me on ice packs for ages and that's NO FUN in winter. I have to admit they are working though. Especially where I got the shots. Good luck to all the hatchers!!!
