Nevadans?

I was just starting to read your blog. That's a bummer about your chickens! My chicken coop and run is constructed like Fort Knox. It has to be out where I live. There are predators everywhere - from the sky (hawks and even eagles), ground (mostly coyotes and raccoons), and below ground (snakes). The run is large and has 3 layers of wire. I've never had a breach.

This picture will give you an idea of what I'm talking about.

The smaller mesh extends one foot into the ground and two feet above. The heavy gauge wire also extends one foot down, but three feet above. The chicken wire goes from the top of the smaller mesh to the top of the run, which is six feet high. The "roof" is also covered in chicken wire.

That's such an impressive setup! I love that you layered the wires like that, great idea to keep everyone in or out. My first batch of chicks could fit through the rectangular welded wire like it was nothing until they were about 7 weeks, so next improvement to the new run will probably be some hardware cloth.

Thanks for the feedback about my blog- it's really cool to see that someone besides me reads it

another learning experience to go along with having chickens. It was hard getting back to writing after losing most of my flock, but it's helping me learn how to deal with everything that life throws my way instead of sweeping it under a rug

Totally agree with NevadaRon! S&W buys/sells tons of eggs! You just have to call and see if they have room in the fridge. I've never heard of anyone being questioned about selling eggs from backyard flocks. Who cares when you're getting a better product from local folks. Happy chickens...better eggs. Mine are spoiled ROTTEN! We love our girls, and my kids love coming up with treats for them. Watching them chase crickets always cracks them up. :) Very fun animals.

Any locals know about regulations about giving away/ selling eggs? Any laws I've found relate mostly to CA. I see a lot of people selling on Craigslist, but if I do end up selling or trading eggs, I want to do it legally (not sure if this is or isn't).

My girls are a few months off, but I figured I'd start poking around

I haven't heard of any rules or regulations, as long as you're not being such a sheister that people feel the need to call any agencies on you. (Like selling rotten eggs, or something.) We don't even have to advertise on Craigslist. We have such a customer base that we actually have a waiting list, and a couple of standing customers who are first come, first served. If our egg stash gets a little high, we either make a quiche or just mention on Facebook that we have a surplus. Solves the problem. Nothing in the fridge ever gets as old as anything in a grocery store.

Seth, she's only about a week and a half old, so she doesn't look like too much :) I'll snap a picture for you though!

Americanvalkyrie, I'd hope nobody would throw their local egg suppliers under the bus! I was buying from a really nice lady in Sparks; she's not supposed to have chickens, but the neighbors didn't mind the fresh eggs so they didn't say anything. In California the laws are pretty direct, and the whole state is so sue-happy that I'd be scared to sell (or even give away) over there!
