Nevadans?

Well I still have not found my camera but I was going through some pictures that I took during the process of making the brooder so you can get the jist of where we went with it from them:

We took 2X4's and built the frame of the brooder, it is 2DX8WX3H. I painted it with exterior semi-gloss to protect the wood of course and to make cleaning much easier.

Currently, I have a 1/2 in plywood sheet separating the brooder into two sections because I have my bigger chicks in one side and the 2 week old chicks in the other side. Where you see the 1X1's is the where the two doors on each side meet in the middle. They are just latched doors to help keep the heat in. I am eventually going to cut out windows in the doors and put in plexiglass so that I can see in without opening the doors.

It is 16 inches off of the ground to allow me to push a tote underneath for cleaning and also to allow the adult chickens to have more floor space. They really like roaming underneath there, it is kind of like a little cave for them.

The inside floor is covered with 1/2 in. wire mesh to allow for any mess to fall through when I am cleaning. I just cover it with about 3 inches of hay to keep in the heat and give them something to dig around in, sleep on, etc.

The top of the brooder has chicken wire stapled across the top to keep them from flying out of the brooder and it also makes it nice for repositioning the heat lamps in various areas because it gives you something to hang them onto. You can also use it to hang those bird molds made out of suet and seed to give them something to do other than peck on each other.

The back side walls on each side is where I put the homemade removeable roost, this roost has been a complete godsend and my DH is awesome for making it. He built this for the first set when we still had them in the house. It gives them more elevated space and also gives the chicks that are getting picked on a place to run and hide. But it is mobile so I can take it out for cleaning and also when the babies are outside they have a place to get up off of the ground if they need/want to.

And this is just a picture of the outside of the coop after we got the door on and it painted on the outside. We are going to be putting in a window on the right side of the door and the chicken run door will go down on the bottom under the window.

Anyway, I will get some updated pictures soon, I am going into full on search party mode tomorrow to find my camera and then I will take pictures of the semi-finished but currently done for now coop and then of the girls.

I think I have a McCaw Black Australorp. I went to let my GLW & BA chicks outside this morning, I picked up two and closed the brooder door behind me but of course the boys could not leave it alone and opened the door. When they did, the one Blk Australorp hen that always hops up on my hand when I go to move them, flew out of the brooder, all the way across the coop to where I was standing in the doorway and landed on my shoulder! I figured she would fall down cause she was just randomly flying to get out of her confinement but she just settled in on my shoulder until I got outside to their outside pen and then she hopped down on the ground like it was her intention all along to ride my should outside. I have had chickens perch on my arm before but never purposely fly up to sit on my shoulder.

I was really beginning to think that they were never going to become friendly and stay flighty but the last few days they have really started becoming super affectionate. I do not have to chase them around the brooder and they are always encircling my feet and following me everywhere now. I know chickens have a brain the size of a pea and ppl say they do not have the brain power to emote emotion but there is something about a chicken cuddling up to you that just warms you from head to toe. I am gonna be on Fatal Attractions - Attack of the Chickens because I am projecting emotion onto my chickens.

Lol Nikki, that's a really cute story!!!

Hey sunny, what color eggs do your orp/ams lay? I think my girl is half am because of her itty bitty tiny peacomb... Curious as to what egg color is more dominant between the two

They lay brown eggs. Your's is probably half EE like my Sweet Cheeks. She lays a light brown egg too and brown is dominant but with a full ameraucana parent they may lay green eggs. With EEs just about any color egg is possible.

That is adorable Nikki! Did I mention before that my oldest daughter is named Nikki?

Genny I want to get some blue ams in spring. We should mix them with your blue orps and get some pretty blue EEs!

She Looks more like your Honkers. She's got no muffs at all but some itty bitty wattles coming in. Her face is totally wild. She looks like a raven. And her feathers are kind of laced which is sooooo pretty.
I was just asking because I have already got three girls laying and I can not tell them apart, lol. One pullet lays an egg that is a tinge lighter than the others, and I always know which eggs belong to the del because she always lays while she perches, haha.

I did not remember you saying that but it is very possible. My memory these days is not the best heh. It is kind of funny, I went almost my entire life without knowing maybe one or two other Nikki's. Mostly Nicole's nicknamed Nicky or Nicki or any of the other variations of how to spell it but never Nikki and NEVER not a nickname for Nicolette or Nicole. Now that I am older it seems like it has become a pretty popular name and spelling of the name.

Mine is actually short for Nikolas but my Mom did not know how I would react to having my official name Nikolas and being a girl so she named me Nikki on my birth certificate and then told me later that my real name was Nikolas. I almost changed it officially when I was around 16 but I figured I would stay with what I given. All during my college years I signed my name and registered everything with Nikolas. *LOL* Now really only my family and friends call me Nikolas.

Totally different subject: Did anyone see the Dirty Jobs episode this weekend where he went to Murray McMurray Hatchery? I have not seen it yet but my DH taped it for me. He said it was pretty neat.

Yes her's is a nickname for Nichole as well but we've called her that since she was very small. I also call her Nicolina.

No I did not see that episode. At least I don't think so. I saw an episode at a hatchery but I didn't remember it being McMurray.
