You can make a cage type basket with hareware cloth to set the cartons with the eggs in lockdown. Pretty easy and you can do it by cutting the wire and using ties to hold it together. That way the chicks are inside and don't wander the bator while the turner is still working. They really aren't that bright. I do have a homemade bator I usually use for hatching and a couple of LGs for the same reason. helps when you stagger a hatch.
I usually try to let my eggs set for 24 hours to let the aircell mend. I get lots of broken ones. Most don't hatch but I have had a couple make it, so it's worth it to set them.
