Nevadans?

okay calling the northern-nevadans. i went to the feed store today and they had little baby turkeys (ohhh so cute!) and my boyfriend said "gosh, it sure would be nice to have a home grown turkey to eat for thanksgiving and christmas
hmm.png
"

got me thinking maybe someone here could help us out with that? would anyone here be interested in raising and butchering this winter a couple of turkeys for us? we would pay an up-front food/board/butcher cost. just curious. plus it would be neat to have some baby turkeys around for a couple of days...

Welcome back Sunny! Ecuador looks fabulous! I'm sorry to hear about your breeding stock

Well can you tell me if you think this is a cockeral - I think it is. Sunny, it is one of the Amerucana x EE's that I got from you. It is 5-1/2 weeks old. The other ones are not red like this one.

This fall I might have MF Cochin Bantams trios or pairs - if you are still interested then. Is the show on for this year?

ke_ben Adorable chicks

aubreynoramarie we are hatching turkeys in the next week or so........and have two more batches due after that. If all hatch, do well and grow.........I will have some looking for wonderful homes who will cook them.........errr eat.......I mean treat them right
wink.png
These are not the broad breasted meat variety.........if that matters - they are Rio Grande (you can google them to see pictures) kinda plain looking but should be mighty tasty...........I mean yummy..........err well behaved on the table or freezer.

SparksNV That is a cockerel.........if you look close at his comb, he will have 3 almost noticable "rows of peas" - a set of bumps or almost bumps on each side of the middle large bumps in his "comb" area (clear as mud
wink.png
).......now look close at the pullet pictured with him - on her you will just see 1 maybe row down the center of her "comb" area. Hers is also noticably smaller............with loads less color. He should have little to no wattles, being he is an EE - but I have noticed those without the muff/beard gene do have some wattle growth.

Well seven chickens are resting in the fridge..........awaiting the final call to freezer camp.............on the flip side - I have 6 new chicks running around with mom and two different clutches hatching under broody hens today............one step forward and twelve steps back

Thanks Genny you are confirming what I thought...

It's kind of a crap shoot huh - out of 10 chickies so far 5 are cockerals. 4 out of 5 FBCM and so far 1 out of 5 EEs.

I just want 4 (ideally, it was to be 2 FBCM and 2 EEs) but it looks like 1 FBCM and maybe 3 EEs - who knows!?

Speaking of turkeys: Here are the promised new pics of mine. Now that they are nice and warm in the brooder they are posing better!

What kind of turkeys did they have at the feed store you went to Aubrey?

I Dont know. They had a sold sign on them. All I know is they were white AND STINKING CUTE!

Genny: I think our biggest problem is that mark would like the idea of knowing where his bird came from, but we don't have the space or guts to kill it ourselves

I know around thanksgiving sometimes people sell birds ready to go on craigslist but we can't butcher it

I'll let mark know. He seems really interested in doing it this year, and if you're gonna be selling turkeys then, ten why not! A smaller bird would be better for us anyhow since we don't really have families here
