Nevadans?

We don't have a good spot for a brooder yet. Our garage is horrendously hot--not sure if that would be a good place to raise chicks. I suppose they do need it to be hot but I'm not sure about our garage. is your garage usually a comfortable temperature for humans?

Yea it's always more temperate than outside anyway. Never had them out there except spring though. I have no idea how warm the garage in the new place is.

Hi Jen! Welcome to the Nevada thread!

Nice to see more Rancho Haven folk here! DH and I are moving up there in a week. I just candled my marans' eggs a few days ago and the first batch does not look promising. I only had 6 developing out of 2 dozen.

So I am not much help on that front either. I'm afraid I won't have any extras out of this batch but maybe by next spring I'll have a few chicks for sale. What type of marans are you looking for? I will be raising FBCMs. My stock comes from Wynette out of Michigan (her stock is gorgeous) and I want to concentrate on egg color primarily. I may have to take a week off and drive to Michigan if these don't hatch for me.

Anyway, welcome and I'll add your name to the opening post now.

BTW, if you are not doing anything later today, some of the peeps from this thread are meeting up at Bartley Ranch Park for a pot luck this afternoon at 2pm. I know, really short notice. You are more than welcome though!

So you got a reprieve.

OK, I gotta get ready for the BBQ. I'm afraid my new smoker does such a great job (compared to my old one) that we are having BBQed pork jerky instead of ribs.

& to the Nevada thread Jen!

I'm all done with the sirloin tip roasts and the pasta salad, I'm going to load the truck off I go to the park to find us a place! I'll have my truck as close to the area as possible. Look for a 1999 Silver Yukon with Nevada plates if that helps anyone! I'm wearing a sky blue top, jeans and pink flip flops!

See everyone there!

Oh and Sunny, I'm bringing Mille with me so there will be a dog there too! She's 11 years old and is a border/aussie and she's the best dog I've ever had and I've had a few!

Okay - See everyone who's going to the get-together there!

Bartley Ranch Park off of McCarran south on Lakeside up the hill, park is on the left and the entrance is a covered bridge.

Thanks for the welcomes.

I can't for the life of me figure out how to do quotes.

Anyway, Sunnydawn - Where in Rancho Haven will you be moving to? I love it out here but wish it wasn't so far to town.

At this point I would settle for any type of Marans. The hatching eggs I bought were Black Copper, Blue and Wheaten.

Thanks for the offer for the Pot Luck, it sound like fun but I already have more stuff to do this weekend than I could possibly have time for:/. Maybe next time.

welcome! I'm relatively new to the group and new to chickens. I don't have any yet. I have been digging around on the web and here is some info on sources of Marans. these would be good for you to check out and see if that would fit your needs as I don't have personal experience with them.

http://chocolatechickens.com/ in sacramento; they will hatch chicks for pick up. So that might be an option for you. you could have them hatch them and drive over to sacramento to pick them up. or you could drive over for the eggs and it would be better than getting shipped.
Bue Copper Marans $6/egg
or $72/doz
Barnevelders $5/egg
or $60/doz
Welsummers $4/egg
or $48/doz
Blue Ameraucanas (BBS) $3/egg or $36/doz
Mottled Java $2/egg
or $24/doz
Lavender Orpington Project $6/egg or $72/doz (2nd gen)
Olive eggers (Marans x Ameraucana)
$1/egg or $12/doz.

the other one is http://rockin-g-ranch.com/TheFancyChick.html she has maran eggs and chicks for sale (i think black copper marans). she will ship chicks. she's on BYC and i have seen positive comments from other BYC people regarding her. i emailed her a question and she answered me back right away.

As for myself, after searching around and reading about breeders, I will probably be going with ideal hatchery chicks to start with and add to the flock with local birds. I'm not planning to breed or anything. If you will be selling some of your existing flock, i may be interested in SL wyandottes and black australorps. No coop yet so that wouldn't be until October or so.
good luck!

Elizabeth
