Nevadans?

I'm glad to hear they're good at sexing the large fowl. After reading this thread last night, I looked up alternative hatcheries. But everything else had higher shipping rates and was further away... I know the chicks are ok for 72 hours, but I'd rather get something shipped from closer, in warmer climates.

Has anyone ordered cornish crosses from them? I was thinking of ordering a few of them to "pad" my order, then processing them within about 8 weeks afterward.

Have you thought about ordering your birds from Green's Feed? They place their orders through Privett Hatchery. You do pay around $3.00 per bird but you get what you want.

That's where I got my chicks this spring... I didn't know you could place orders with them, though. I'll check it out, thanks!

Yea I've gotten a bunch of birds from Greens/Privett. I've had very good luck with them.

Elizabeth I promise I will post pics soon!

I was very happy with my ideal order. i haven't tried cornish crosses. I might order some chicks again in the spring. there are a few different breeds I'd like to get. some days i convince myself to wait another year for more and other days I'm ready to order! we'll see. this chicken thing is very addicting. americanvalkyrie, are you still interested in some black australorps from me? do you want 2 or 3? I can part with up to 3 of them to make room for some other breeds later.

My parents got me wire egg baskets for christmas and my sister got me a sign for the coop.

how many different breeds of chicks does green's have in the spring? I wasn't even thinking about chickens last spring.

Yes yes yes!!! Ideally, I'd like 2 australorps. If you need to get rid of a 3rd, I can take 3, but I'd also like room for a few more breeds in my coop as well... or I have a friend who might like one.

We got our chicks from Green's in mid-April, kind of on a whim while my husband was on medical leave from his heart attack. (A big health wave that also included doubling our garden space.) We called a few other feed stores, and they weren't going to have them until May, and we wanted them THEN. They had Delawares and faverolles, and you had to buy at least 5. We still have 4 of them, and they're awesome ladies. Extra-Crispy turned out to be a rooster.

2 is fine. I understand about needing to leave room. I wish I'd chosen more varieties when I ordered but oh well, that's hindsight. Also, it was fall so there weren't as many choices available. i have an acquaintance interested in chickens whom i'm trying to convince to get started this spring. if she does, I can give her a few of my other ones to get started. I still have quite the list of different breeds I'd like to try.

more bad luck here! our coop caught on fire while we were out to dinner tonight! I seriously have no clue what happened. The heat lamp (which hangs from the roof by a hook) was on the floor completely shattered and the wire was (and im going to try my best to describe it because we already threw it in the garbage) melted in two and the wire completely came apart. ah screw it, im going to go grab it and take a pic so maybe you guys can try to help me figure out what happened. either way when we went to check on them we smelled the fire but it had almost all gone out by then. I dont know how, thank goodness but the coop is completely smelly and filled with fumes and i have no clue what to do with the girls. Its such a strong odor.

i covered up the shards of glass from the bulb with a piece a wood for the evening. ugh.

Oh no Aubrey!!! How terrifying!

I think we all fear that will happen, it is so common. Usually it is the birds themselves flying into the light and knocking it down. Without more details I doubt we can venture more than a guess though. Was the light on? Were the chickens in the coop? Was the light screwed in place or hanging from a hook? Are your girls ok?!! OMG this is horrible! I wish I had something you could use in the meantime... Oh dear please tell us the girls are ok.

sunny dont worry. I wish i knew the whole story as well. Mark and i were out to dinner when it happened and our roomate tucked them all in before leaving for the night. i dont know if it was on or not, but i dont think it was. The light was hanging from a hook and the hook is still securely in place but i think maybe they did try to "fly to the light" or something and knocked it down. I dont know. they are all okay though. weve pulled out every crate we have and tonight they will sleep squished together but cozy. they smell like electrical fire though. i hope playing in the yard tomorrow airs em out. were leaving the coop open tonight so it will hopefully air out also.

NOT HAPPY CHICKENS. (actually they seem fine.)

so i have one chicken alone in the yellow crate, two in each smaller crate, and eight in the big crate.

Funny though how they say night time is the best time to pluck a chicken from the coop. no forking way. these birds screamed like humans and Olive put up the most humungous fight ever. Im sure this whole thing would have been terribly comical if i wasnt so aggitated. Only my most darling birds came willingly, and even that worried me enough to ask them "what if i was a coon?!?!?". Some of them fought me tooth and nail, i even ended pulling out poor Olives tail feathers. All of the screaming and bustling attracted coons who literally WALTZED INTO THE YARD while mark and i were collecting the girls. Good ol' Elvis acting very brave and tough kept them at bay though. But geeze, the nerve! he was litterally chasing them off the entire time we were out there! On top of that, as i was carrying gilbert into the house he decided that was the best time for him to show me that he has learned to crow and crowed his stupid head off while i was descretely trying to get the girls to calm down from the fight and the fright. UGH.
but now I have covered the crates with a thick blanket and everyone is fast asleep. Mark says he is going to sleep better tonight than he ever has knowing that the girls are in the house and safe. SHEESH. whatta night. Im ready for my new coop now.

Sunny I forgot to add that we caught the incident in time and only straw and wire caught on fire. The coop will remain but it stinks way too bad for me to let the girls stay in there until the fumes clear up.
