Nevadans?

Actually unless you can back up safely and the cat is still a ways away, (to a secure place like in the house or car), Missy is correct. It is better to just make some noise and raise your arms up and out (to appear larger). I know the impulse is to move away (OK to run away) but no cat can resist a chase. That is the wrong thing to do. And yes, I know to not turn my back on a mountain lion although we have a joke in my family, "You don't have to be faster than a mountain lion to get away from one you just have to be faster than the person next to you".

I was reading an article on-line (on a Nevada wildlife site of all things) that as well as yelling and making yourself appear larger you should throw stones at it! OMG can you see all the attacks that may occur from people reading this and deciding that they should bend over to pick up stones if they think a cougar is about to attack?!!! Jeez Louise I was horrified when I read this! At least they could have warned people to only throw things they might already happen to be carrying! The second worse thing to do in front of a mountain lion is to bend over so that you look smaller!!!

you're poor son! A body cast does not sound like fun at all!

Would you really like to sell eggs and such at the farmer's market? I'd love to part time but my back won't handle a whole day. I think you are right it would take quite a few of us to get enough eggs stocked up in less than a week to sell. So we could spell each other. We would want to do a different market from the one that already has an egg vendor. IDK if others are interested I am.

We would need to find out what type of permit we need and how much it all would cost before anyone makes a decision yea or nay.

Sunny, I can't produce a lot of eggs but I would definitely be interested in adding what we do get. maybe three dozen eggs a week at most. Once we find some land we can get a lot more serious about production. but we are buried in eggs here and nobody is getting anything done about selling them. Once the girls start laying again if anyone needs some extras to fill out orders for their customers. let me know. I will most likely accept any offer since we are not getting anything for them the way it is. My little army could serve time at a stand to help compensate for lack of contribution as well. But the idea of buying up other peopled products to sell at a market is actually pretty common. If my beehive thing works I might be able to add honey to the list in a year or so. You can't expect any honey from the hives in the first year.

I am definatley in trested but it is to early i need to get my coop. when i am about to get my auracamas can we revist this? and since no one know if the ameracuanas are SQ i will show them and if i dont do well at least i will have pretty eggs

Seth, I don't know if you are interested in breeding the Aurucaunas or not but if you are let me know. I have two roosters that I am not going to keep right now. they came from birds I got from Sunny last year. You can PM me if you are interested. They are cheap, as in free I just can't ahve them crowing every morning around here.

Sheryl, I'd love to go to the show with you, and meet some of these guys! I would only have to take Friday off if its bad weather, right? I'm trying to fit this in without missing any days from work. Or you mean you'll leave friday afternoon? I'm really excited about the show, I've never been. Well, except to the state fair, but I expect it'll be bigger. I might try and see if I can find a trio of blue or splash cochin banties, I want to try breeding those to SQ. My first shot at breeding, wish me luck!! I'll have to keep everyone updated on that.

Wow, mountian lions and bobcats..I think I'll stay in Lemmon Valley, lol. I saw a mountian lion once, so Im pretty much good for life. It was awkward. Good job not gettin mauled Sunny, Im glad you kept you head. I would have Freaked out probably.

So this new girl started a rumor about me, and it went around so fast it was crazy. The supervisor found me and asked about it, because by the time I heard the rumor myself, I 'bashed into her cart and called her names'. Okay..I wasnt even picking yesterday. Nor was I mean to her. I like everybody, but now Im not so sure about this one. Ive had an emotional week though, I just started crying and my supervisor gave me rollos. Horrible day. At least everyone knows that its not true. Right?

Have a great day everybody! :]

That's the plan Lacey. Nice weather we leave super early Saturday morning, bad weather we leave late afternoon Friday to avoid the weather. I'll get a motel room if the weather is going to be bad or I may hit up my family in Fairfield to stay with them and they love extra people so no problem either way I'm excited for the show too. I went to the November one here and they just didn't have much for sale there. My understanding is this show is the biggest on the West Coast and from what I'm reading on the Stockton thread there are a lot of people coming from all over the West Coast bringing their birds they are going to sell there.

If we do the Farmer's Market thing then we really need to research everything we need to do before we do it. We must have people who can work it, I think the hours are from 8 or 9 am to 1 pm. We would need lots of cartons too. I think we would be able to sell eggs where there's only 1 other person selling them. The Farmer's Market has lots of competition there with other people selling the same things but the egg people have no competition so we would do better. We must match the same price though, that's what everyone else does, all the prices are the same for the same products.

I heard you should make yourself bigger and make lots of noise when you are faced with wild animals though I heard it was better to step backwards slowly more. I don't think we should try an experiment to see which works better. I'm the one who can't run so I guess everyone else would be safe if I was there.

As far as a stand at the farmer's market...
I can't offer eggs, since I only have 4 layers and I have 4 hungry family members. But I CAN offer lots of soaps to take up the other end of the table and make things look more plentiful if the eggs sell out fast. These won't go bad in a day of summer heat. It takes 6 weeks for soap to cure, but after that time it's good for a couple of years (if well-made) so I can start stocking up if we all want to do this. I can also offer a folding table, a blue/white pavilion awning, extra produce from my garden, and shifts at the table.

I can't promise how much extra produce I'll have... but I know I'm planting tons. Right now I'm still deciding whether or not to use the awning frame to string up bean lines, since it's sat in its case for 3 years and I've never put it up. But if we do the stall thing, we can use my awning and I'll string the beans on something else.

Lacey, sorry to hear work is so full of drama! I'm sooo very thankful I finally work for myself. Before massage therapy and art, I did warehouse during the day and security details at night. Mostly I worked with men, which I would rather do, because they don't get nearly as catty! Really, how boring can someone's life be that they have to make up rumors about someone at work? I barely had time to THINK nasty thoughts about someone else, much less go making up nasty rumors.

Hi all,

Sad news. Snowflake passed last night, egg yolk peritonitis. She seemed fine that morning, out scratching with everyone. She was my only blue egg layer. I've had three other chickens that have died and they just went to sleep on my lap. She went into convulsions. It was horrible. I butcher some of my chickens but I always make it quick and the least traumatic as possible. I felt so bad that she suffered. Had I known I would have put her out of her misery.

No matter what "they" say you should do, every single time I've run across a rattlesnake, a coyote, a bear, or a cougar, my very first instinct was to jump my butt back and get as much distance as possible. That first burst of adrenaline tends to do that for you, before your brain kicks in. Once I was OFF of the rattlesnake, I could then decide to go away slowly. The time we encountered the moose, though, we had tons of distance and were able to make the decision to just get back inside the truck and spend the day in the office. A week later, we came back with a can of pepper spray that shot out 50 feet.

Hugs! So sorry to hear that!

With all of the years I've lived in rattlesnake country I've never ever stepped on one. My dad had one in his driveway once and he called the fire department who came and cut the head off. A boy up the street from him got the rest of the snake and boy did it make his day.

Oh Kathy, sorry to hear you went through that. I hear EE's has more issues with egg laying.
