What's interesting is that the Polish hatching eggs are the hardest to find on ebay.... Harder to find than hen's teeth! I'd love to hatch some out if somebody would want 'em...but, then again, have to find them eggies.
Sigh... I'm such a hatchaholic.....
I love the new avatar too Sunny but this one isn't making me hungry for some unknown reason?
I put the ducks in the coop last night and locked them in there. I've heard with ducks you don't need to do this but I just wanted to be on the safe side. It was sooooo cold this morning. It was 8 degrees at my house and the coop was 19 degrees. I knew the lady ducks would be just fine coming down the ramp since they go into the coop everyday to check it out but Justin I was more worried about since he never has used the ramp before. He did great until near the end when we went off of the side of it but he didn't get hurt. I thought for sure the ducks would b-line out of there when we opened up the coop but instead it was Wynnie one of my Wyandottes who jumped down from the roost first and then the ducks came down.
They were so cute.
Sheryl, what's your experience with ducks been like? My daughter really wants a couple, and we do have a pond. I keep giving her reasons not to, but they would totally make her day if I can't find a big enough reason. How are they with the chickens? Noise level? Neighbor-friendliness?
Oh yeah! The BCMs are my babies!!! They are my main project as I am just nuts about the eggs! (so hard to get used to saying BCMs instead of FBCMs)![]()
I'm loving the ducks so much. They are so different than chickens can ever be. The drakes are very quiet, the females are the noisy ones. I have Welsh Harlequin's and they are on the critical list and I would hate to have this breed disappear. That's why I'm going to Stockton so I can increase our flock to 5 without having to worry about inner breeding too much. I'll be breeding them next year so if you want to tell your daughter to wait until then then you can decide for sure what you would like.
The ducks and chickens get along fantastically. The ducks didn't have any issues at all and neither did the chickens. I've heard you can introduce new ducks into the flock and they automatically accept them. Ducks do not get parasites or diseases at all so the ducks won't give the chickens anything and the chickens won't get the ducks anything. The ducks even preen the chickens.
There are different breeds out there. The noisiest ones are the call duck and they can fly too. I've read the Welsh Harlequin's are the calmest of all ducks and these guys are very calm. The female's are louder but not as loud as chickens except every so often they will chatter really loud but usually it's when I come with treats and they are running for them.
My next door neighbor loves them too, he's always looking over the fence at the whole flock. The mean Neighbor behind me hasn't been out since the weather turned cold so I have no idea how she's feeling about them.
Oh was I rubbing it in? Sorry Sunny!

Yay! We already have a name picked out for whenever we can add a Marans to our flock.
