Daniel that is awesome - did you buy a book or are you just going off of online sources? And if online, do you have links?

Ron, Just google Rocket Mass Heater and you come up with a lot of links and videos. We started with just trying to build one from the pictures and info online. The result was a heater that worked just so so. So we ead some more and found where the problem was and rebuilt. it worked better but still not right. we continued this until we ran into things you cannot see in pictures and video. Eventually we bought the book and it does cover the issues. They are internal things and there are to many to cover here. How large the burn box is, the burn tunnel needs to be the narrowest part of the entire heater. the heat riser needs to be x number of times taller than the burn box. the distance between the top fo the heat riser and the bottom of that barrel needs to be adjusted to your preferences. and the transition to the duct work needs to be right. That is the point that most designs fail. The hardest part is getting enough draft to prevent smoke back at any time. That is the point we are at but it got to cold to be out there playing in mud and stuff.

I am happy to share the info from the book with anyone willing to come learn it. but here is a drawing of a cut away of the entire stove.

Yeah I know it is to small but the book covers all the letters and what they mean and the details concerning them. Capital letter are critical things while the lower case are more informative and can make the heater better.
B for exampel is height of burn box, C is teh burn tunnel. E is height of Heat riser. G is the first place that heat really builds up and is also the place the air flow must be reversed. Also that heat riser and barrel must be round. Down around the letter J is that transition from the heater to the duct work. K is the duct work and chimney. Notice lots of insulation around certain parts. this is also important. you want to get the heat where you want it. It is also important that certain parts of the heater are hot for it to work properly.

Sunny that avatar is a winner.

Thank you! Steve loves this pic too so I'll probably leave it for awhile. He's tickled that you voted for his choice. He says "Hi". We are both facinated with the heater. I have been scouring the web for info on it and there is tons of it! Sounds like you've got a winning project on your hands. Maybe you could hold a little class/workshop for a few of us and we can even compensate you for your time. For people like Steve and I seeing it in person is a huge benefit!

Unfortunately the search for this stuff has also got me on a kick to revisit some of the projects I had dreamed about awhile ago but set aside. Like passive and active solar heating, cob or straw bale housing, gray water recovery for landscape and garden. Well not just you. These have been topics of conversation with a couple of other folks as well. I'm thinkin it might be the right time to investigate these further so we have our projects lined up before we settle on a piece of property. Oh I almost forgot, I also want a large outdoor clay oven or "beehive" stove and a small windmill to harness these wonderful winds we get here.

Steve is almost ready to retire (well a couple more years) so we will have some time on our hands.

I love the new avatar too Sunny but this one isn't making me hungry for some unknown reason?

I put the ducks in the coop last night and locked them in there. I've heard with ducks you don't need to do this but I just wanted to be on the safe side. It was sooooo cold this morning. It was 8 degrees at my house and the coop was 19 degrees. I knew the lady ducks would be just fine coming down the ramp since they go into the coop everyday to check it out but Justin I was more worried about since he never has used the ramp before. He did great until near the end when we went off of the side of it but he didn't get hurt. I thought for sure the ducks would b-line out of there when we opened up the coop but instead it was Wynnie one of my Wyandottes who jumped down from the roost first and then the ducks came down.

They were so cute.

alright all of you impulsive chicken mathers. I have decided through all of this whirlwind ordering of things that i am going to try showgirl eggs again this spring and try REALLY hard to do polish/showgirls. now, dont everyone all at once come banging on my door for a half naked moppy headed thing!

re: Marans eggs

Supposedly because of their thick shell enabling longer storage they were the preferred eggs of sea voyagers. The coloring on the egg, btw, is not in the shell but on the shell and if you catch a really freshly laid egg you can rub it off. (?!?)

What I find funny is the M.S. connection.... A decade or so ago Martha Stewart got all up in our face about raising chickens, especially the EE's and show-casing the eggs and touting how they were more healthful....supposedly more Omega-3's or some such and lower cholesterol. Then EVERYBODY got into the blue eggs. Her latest chicken pronouncement was about Marans and how the eggs were creamier and therefore far superior and how she wouldn't cook with anything else. Then EVERYBODY wanted Marans. Sadly, Martha is going off the air so the next new *it* in chickens will probably be slower in discovery. Anybody want to take a guess at what it'll be?

Me, I just love the way the wheaten Marans hens look. I like the splashes, too.

Aubreynoramarie:

What's interesting is that the Polish hatching eggs are the hardest to find on ebay.... Harder to find than hen's teeth! I'd love to hatch some out if somebody would want 'em...but, then again, have to find them eggies.

Sigh... I'm such a hatchaholic.....
