Nevadans?

Cordon Bleu, because she would be French. When we get our two australorps, they're going to be named Sweet and Sour.

My husband names most of the birds, so I can't take much credit for the witty names. He just has that type of sense of humor.

I love it!

I think you need Chow Mein and Rice too.

We're making a list so we can tag them as they arrive here. I'm ordering a brahma, so she'll be either Korma or Masala. Then we're thinking Cacciatore, Tetrazini, Parmesan, Buffalo... we may end up recycling some names as we go through roosters and meanies.

(And then, in the middle of this family conversation, my son says he wants to name one Luke Skywalker. He's not good at following the thread of a conversation.)

re: Marans eggs

Supposedly because of their thick shell enabling longer storage they were the preferred eggs of sea voyagers. The coloring on the egg, btw, is not in the shell but on the shell and if you catch a really freshly laid egg you can rub it off. (?!?)

This makes sense since they stay fresh so much longer and the shell is a little more rugged than a normal egg. Yes all brown eggs have the color on the outside of the shell rather than all the way through like a blue egg but the marans is painted on and sealed with a mucous coat that dries solid but if they are gathered up right away, while still wet, the color does rub right off. Not like a regular brown shell where you need to rub with a cloth or something under water to see white, I mean barely touch them and the color comes right off! I'm still trying to find a nesting material that won't destroy the pretty coloring when it's laid.

What I find funny is the M.S. connection.... A decade or so ago Martha Stewart got all up in our face about raising chickens, especially the EE's and show-casing the eggs and touting how they were more healthful....supposedly more Omega-3's or some such and lower cholesterol. Then EVERYBODY got into the blue eggs. Her latest chicken pronouncement was about Marans and how the eggs were creamier and therefore far superior and how she wouldn't cook with anything else. Then EVERYBODY wanted Marans. Sadly, Martha is going off the air so the next new *it* in chickens will probably be slower in discovery. Anybody want to take a guess at what it'll be?

Me, I just love the way the wheaten Marans hens look. I like the splashes, too.

I hate to be this way but I was kinda bummed when M.S. jumped on the Marans wagon. She kinda took away some of the uniqueness, seemed more special before. Once she started mouthing off it just became trendy cause Martha loved them! Like all the rich history of the marans was no longer important. All I heard after that was "OH! Those are M.S.'s favorites too"!

And no the marans eggs are not lower in cholesterol either like some folks started saying a while back. They have done a lot of testing of different chicken eggs and although some tests did show a slight difference the next test was unable to confirm the results. The only tests that showed a marked difference in cholesterol were related to the chicken's diet not the breed. A free range chicken with access to insects and greens was shown to lay a healthier egg. Lower cholesterol, a rich source of vision-protective carotenoids and some very beneficial omega 3 oils to name a few.

The tests did show there were differences in the protiens of the marans egg. This may be why the eggs taste creamier to some of us.

I don't watch her so I wouldn't know about her talking chickens and stuff. I just don't know why she rubs me so wrong but she does. I always feel like she's fake. I hate feeling this way about anyone.

Well then his pet will have a unique name compared to the rest! Everyone will know it's his!

Yep she rubs a lot of folks the same way, me included. She is hard to watch for any length of time. I do have to admit she has some great ideas though. I've tried a few of her recipes too and they are also very good (the few I've tried anyway). Steve would get so mad if I watched her show when he was home but I would just say, "Hey, a good idea is a good idea. I won't let a person's bad personality stop me from using a good idea". I didn't watch her often but when the previews looked promising... yes, I admit it, I did used to tune in now and then.

Here I was biting my tongue thinking I was the only one that didn't like her. IMO that is what killed K-Mart - M.S. and blue-light specials is like oil and water!

I decided I didn't like her when she recommended adding saffron to a lemon meringue pie to give it a good color. If I feel pressured to spend $20 just to make one pie, I'm obviously not classy enough to live the Martha Stewart lifestyle.
