Nevadans?

I brought Fuego and Heilo back indoors last night, they think I am being abusive. then the wind started roaring this morning and they think I brought them in to feed them to something. Oh well they are safe so they will just have to be mad at me. Horsefeathers, I agree if the little chick is not in hiding I hope it met a quick end. with one other chick injured it sound to me like the hawk was going after the chicks and Silverchick tried to save them. Take a deep breath and remind yourself that the sorrow is just one part of the entire experience. Sort of like We would not enjoy the sunshine nearly as much if it never rained. All things pass. Today is sad and that will pass and we feel better, that to will pass. My thoughts are with you today.

HorseFeatherz,

She was a really cute hen. The sting of loss is sharp and then poignant, but we must carry on....

I am one of those critter collectors and whenever I lose a pet, I make a donation to an animal rescue group to memorialize my lost one so that some other worthy animal has a chance at a good life. I don't know if that translates to chickens (do they even have chicken rescues?), but I end up feeling double-y good as I usually replenish my own pack in no time flat.

Sometimes I also plant a tree or a rosebush in the garden. One particularly bad year on the ranch I ended up with a grove of liquid ambers.....

Oh Genny!!! I'm so sorry for your loss! I just read this since I hard to work all day yesterday and my power was out since 7am this morning 'til just a little while ago. She was so beautiful! What a brave Mom!!!

I wish I had something to say to make it better but nothing takes the loss of a loved one away.

Take care in this horrible weather...

Did everyone up north survive your hecka wind? We're getting the remnants down here today with some pretty good gusts predicted for this afternoon, but nothing like what Reno's environs had. It was dusty yesterday, so it should be really unhealthy by the end of today.

My Italian blue cypress in the courtyard are dancing all over the place and it's not even full-blown time here and the water has blown out of the fountain!

Yes we survived. I'm missing a few items from my yard since the weather report didn't forcast the winds to be as strong as they were (at least the report I watched) 'til after I'd already figured it out on my own. I still have all my chickens though! DH opened the coop up before he left for work and I heard the wind starting to rage shortly after that so I dashed out in a ferocious wind (felt like it was gonna lift this fat old lady into the air) and ran to the coop to shut it back up. Luckily none of the gals had ventured out yet (it was still early dawn).
Hope none of my neighbors saw me out in that wind, looking that silly, still in my robe.

Well another chicken killed today - my little D'Uccle hen - the only good thing is I now know who the predator is. It is not a hawk, owl or other raptor who hunts to survive. Plans are in the making to deal with this needless killer and in honor of SSS, I will now shut up. I am so mad, I cannot even feel sad yet.

On a happier note - my eggs are in lockdown, due tomorrow. I have 1 black orpington who has hatched and one who is pipping

Eggs from my own coop are in there also - another orp has hatched (splash over buff) and an Orpington/Cochin chick is pipping now.

Guess what.............I have a black Orpington, I have a black Orp

(feels a little perverse to be happy with the recent losses, but it is life and chicks sure can perk a person up)

Yes they do! That's why I went a little crazy after my loss with buying so many chicks. Only problem now is, I'm gonna have to sell some of what I've bought later, once I figure out who's cockeral and who's pullet. I've got way too many birds for my small lot.

I knew my girls hated the wind but I had no idea of the lengths they'd go to get out of it. Somehow they broke into the seperation coop that houses the 1 month old chicks. Maybe the door wasn't shut tight enough and that's all that seperates the two spaces. They like that area cause it is a bit of a wind break so the effects are felt less there. All 12 hens were in there and all the chicks were in hiding (under boards, in nests, behind the door) except one who was busily exploring the now empty open space of the big girl coop on its own. It was a glimpse of that chick that alerted us to the situation. The wierdest part is that the hen house is pretty set up ... food, water, roosts and really plenty of floor space for everyone but if its still light, they don't really wanna be there. Weird.
