Nevadans?

Thats what people said about elvis when he was a puppy. Poor guys head was way too big for his body :( sometimes he would run and his head would droop and snag on the ground causing him to sumersault. Ahhh, animals with disproportionate heads.

Speaking of dogs... I shared this one on Facebook but didn't share it here.

Shadow, who's over 16 years and can't walk up stairs without falling, has hated Tater since she arrived as a puppy. She'll sit in the hallway and not let Tater through, just because she feels like it. A month ago, Shadow fell through the ice in the pond and had to be saved. Tater came to me to tell me something was wrong. Two days ago, Shadow limped across the frozen pond while Tater followed, with her head right under Shadow's butt, and propped her up whenever her hips gave out and she almost fell. Leave it to dogs to teach you that someone who always gets on your nerves might still be there to watch your back, even when you don't treat them that well.

Tater is the one that I'm petting in my avatar. Shadow didn't get off of the couch until at least 6 hours after the picture was taken.

Oh'no is husky/retriever, 4 years old. Her name is short for hono'pa (not sure if I'm pronouncing it right) which is Owens Valley Paiute for wolf. We'd be concerned about her prey drive, if she wasn't so lazy that she hasn't even barked once in 3 years. Tater is just over 2 years old and is pyrenese/german shepard. We think she'll be great with the chickens when she's just a little bit older and we work with her a few more times. Right now she thinks it's a little too fun to watch them scatter when she's in the yard with them.

The chicken is El Pollo Loco, who wasn't too happy with the association exercise I was doing.

This is Shadow, german shepard/husky, who I've had before any of my kids were even in the planning. We're surprised she made it past 16, but she's about at her limit. Obviously, there's not much prey drive going on there. It would have to involve actually moving. But I think she was a little offended that I made her share her couch with some chickens.

Elvis is soooo cute! My husband loves dogs too, and he keeps showing me pages from petfinder. Legally we can't have another until Shadow is gone, and I told him I don't want one... the ones we have now are good with the gardens and chickens, but whenever I dogsit we have problems. But I wouldn't tell him no, because he's a big boy.

Last weekend, though, I gave him money to go to the reptile convention and he brought home another snake, so I think he's satisfied for awhile. Of my chicken order, the turken, the cochin, the minorca, and the silver spangled hamburg are for him.

Aw theyre so cute! I love mixes but Ive always been in love with bull terriers and may possibly have them my whole life. We used to have two but the other one had some crazy mental issues that caused him to attack Elvis out of no where and it just wasnt working.
Your dogs are so pretty and shadow is beautiful . We really are lucky to have dogs that dont eat chickens. I dont care what anyone says, i think its rare unless you have a dog that was made to watch livestock or a big fat pug. I quite honestly dont ever see myself NOT having a dog! or a cat...or chickens, haha

I like sheepherding dogs for being good with chickens. They were raised to watch over totally helpless newborn lambs, which a wilder dog would see as instant prey. Cattleherding dogs are different, though. We can't have any of them because of the autistic kid... they're too smart, and don't take crap. I love mutts... it takes the problems of purebreds and mellows them out. They tend to live longer and healthier, too. Shadow wouldn't have made it past 10 if she was purebred.

I agree about the mutts. I am the first to admit that Bull terriers have huge attitude and health problems in the US because of inbreeding. Our last BT had two operations and many many vet visits costing well over three grand and this was all between the ages of five and nine months. Here is the states they are very hard to find and make a breeder quite a bit of money so most are more concerned with making money than breeding for desireable traits. Its very sad. In England they are completely different dogs personality wise. They are amazing with kids, and get along well with other dogs. I even know someone who has four rescus that get along amazingly. Here in the states i have never met one that wasnt dog aggressive. It makes me sad. I know a lot of people are against breeding dogs for this reason exactly but it really hurts the good name of people that actually do breed for the right reasons.

Hey everybody, long time Lurker, finally deciding to become part of the group. We're from Mesquite NV here. and still fairly new at this whole chicken thing!

Hi Kentdalimp! I've been to Mesquite a few times, when I lived in Cedar City. It's beautiful, but I bet it's grown quite a bit since I was there 15 years ago. Welcome!

Oh, it's okay!! I've had loads of people tell me that, this was kinda a last resource. Dont worry about it, I think I just need to work on my credit for the time being. :] Anyway, we'll just have to party it up at the state fair, hahaa.
A good way to start Lacey is with a credit card from someone like First Premier Bank. You open a savings account with them, deposit say $300, and they issue you a credit card (Visa or MC, or both for two deposits!) with a $300 limit. Not much, but after you've been using your new card for a year and paying on time, you suddenly have credit history! Use it for things like gas and stuff that you would be buying anyway, and as long as you pay it off every month, you don't even get charged interest! It's especially good if you have the Visa and the MC.

Haha! You all crack me up. DH and I are opposites in a lot of ways. I mean opposites from the typical guy/girl stereotypes. I handle all the finances, I was the "do it all myself" DIY person when we met but he knew plumbing and framing and has been learning ever since how to do the other stuff. He's the one that cries when watching sad movies, I'm the one that points out why the story line is unbelievable. I have no problem squishing bugs but yeah he gets to take care of the mice and rats. He gets his feelings hurt easily and I am the one more likely to crack a stupid joke at the wrong time. He's a worry wart about everything, I'm somewhere in the middle but seem super relaxed by comparison.

I HATE asking for directions and he freaks the second he doesn't recognize something and wants to pull over immediately to ask directions (and we usually find our way in a few seconds right where I thought it should be but I have a freaky good sense of direction so it's not fair to pick on him for that). We both love cars but yes he knows more about them than I do and will more often be right about what year a certain car is but I am more often right when diagnosing car trouble but my sense of smell and my hearing are still excellent and his are going fast.

Now that my back is shot though he gets to step into the guy role more often but when it comes to design and planning he admits he's useless. He is also more compassionate than I am, more willing to help (he seriously wants to help everyone!). I like to help folks but feel like it needs to work both ways, although he has gotten very upset when he feels like someone is taking advantage of me. He is also very protective and has a very hard time saying "no". Especially to me (I have to remind him it's OK to be tired and not want to do something). He's nicer than I am most of the time and he loves to clean (which I detest).

Oh he does open all the really tough jars for me though! hahaha All in all it works out quite well. Of course some of the reasons we get along so well can't be talked about here!

I also handle the finances and do all the DIY projects around the house. I make the repairs and build stuff. He is good about helping, though when I need his extra strength. He just doesn't have much interest in doing projects. I also hate to ask for directions and he's the one who says we should. I do not know much about cars though I'm sure I could learn if I had the inclination. He knows just enough to be dangerous
