We have finally gotten to the point where our flock is high quality and ready to be shared with other Orpington fans. I'm looking for other rare breeders in the area to possibly swap with? I would love to get my paws on some olive eggers!

I also incubate eggs for $1 if you are interested! We have a GQF 1502 sportsman; pretty hardcore .

Hello, posted a long time ago before I ever got chickens. Finally got my first flock. I originally wanted rir's bc my husband and I can go through several dozen a week and like big eggs, but could not find any so ended up with 6 bantams, (my husband said no way to chicks, and I looked for a week on Craigslist, every time I finally found chickens that were at least 6 months old, they were gone before I called!). I am glad I ended up with them though. I had no idea chickens could be so cute! I can't wait to add more to the flock...

Holy Chicken Drama, Batman! Is April just unlucky for us? It was April of last year that we had the bronchitis! (Don't worry, no bronchitis so far this year.)

Thursday: Went to Green's Feed and brought home 4 baby chicks. Put them under Jerk and barricaded the nesting box, letting her get used to them all night before I moved them to the mini-coop.
Friday: Opened the nesting box and found 3 chicks. Absolutely no sign of the other. I think it got into the main coop and the other chickens got it. Then that afternoon, I noticed that Sweet had a prolapsed vent.
Saturday: Sweet's vent is all swollen. I'm accepting that I'll probably have to cull her.
Sunday: I notice that Strip the Turken has a big gaping hole in her chest skin, exposing the muscle. I suture it with Super Glue and put her back out. When I go to lock up the chickens, I notice it's open again. I bring her in and Super Glue it again, then put her in a box in my dark closet so she doesn't rip it open or peck at it. I'll be really upset if she gets infected and I have to cull her over something like this.
Today: Strip's wound is open again, so I Super Glue it and put Band-Aids over it. Luckily, it's an area where she has no feathers, so the Band-Aid sticks. She's spent all day in my closet, coming out just long enough to eat/drink a few times, before she's back in the dark.
Tonight: I go to lock up the chickens just before 9pm and notice Tapas, my blue Andalusian, missing. She's never gotten out of the yard. I got the flashlight and looked all over the block, mostly up high in roosting areas, but there's no sign of her. I think a raccoon got her. Maybe a raccoon got Strip, too? Though I noticed her wound at about 6pm.

I know it, I am at 30 also but a lot are bantam so its really not THAT bad at all. And I still remember each ones name so Im definitely not over the line haha

I don't even bother naming most of them these days. Too many of them so they only get named if they have a quirky or super cute, sweet or curious personality.

that's my problem... they should be happy. I have eight girls in a 4 x 6 house, with a run of 12 x 24. We use to let them run in the yard, but they tore it up. They were still pecking each other in the yard. We have tried the plastic blinders and it worked for awhile. They learned how to get around them...so that didn't work. They have been doing this for about a year. One of my barred rocks started it and it is like she taught they others how. We have two of our barred rocks that is the worst ones. We separated them for a long while, but they went right back to doing it again. We are at the end of our ropes. We have read and studied and tried everything we have learned but nothing seems to work. Do we get rid of the ones that are the worst and hope for the other ones to stop. The only problem is we are attached to them all. They are all spoiled and maybe that is what is wrong. My husband brings them treats and they are always fighting over them. They wait at the gate for him everyday. At least they don't eat the feathers anymore since we been giving the lots of protein. Think they were lacking that.

Oh I had a barred rock chick that was super aggressive once! That was the first time we ever culled a baby. Wow that little chick just cannibalized it's brooder mates something awful. All the other barred rocks from that batch turned out to be sweet as pie so I'm not saying BRs are more prone to that kind of thing. Just struck me that your problem bird was the same breed as mine. Weird coincidence. So sorry for your heartache! I won't give my advice on the subject since you are so attached to them and it's too easy to tell you to cull when they are not my birds and I'm not attached to them.

The bunnies and chickens are SO cute! (had to laugh about the babies wanting nothing to do with the cold eggs) Isn't it interesting how many people on this thread have similar interests in quilting, gardens, rabbits, canning, art?

First and foremost, I want to say "Thank you" for all the nice thoughts and sentiments regarding Mom. We're not through it yet as we have her memorial services on April 13th...and judging by what a lifelong fixture she was in her hometown and all the stuff she was involved in it will probably be a huge gathering.

Since the 20th I've been dealing with all things funereal and estate paperwork. Mom, it turns out, was not a tidy bookkeeper and it has been a bit of a forensice family docs hunt. I know we all do not like to think about the inevitable, but I beg you PLEASE get your affairs in order and let your kids or trustees know where the vitals are kept. You can never be too efficient in this department. Luckily, I had a heads up on her passing and got the burial arrangements done beforehand, but the aftermath has been a tidal wave of bureaucracy...and there's nothing worse than trying to find something when you're bawling away. Mom before she died apologized for the mess she was leaving me; I just thought she was talking about clutter. Silly me.

I'm back in NV this week. There's a mega-huge Glass and Bead Expo at the South Point and, of course, I signed up for it eons ago (non-refundable) and so am very much looking forward to immersion into all-day semi-private tutorings by some of the lampworking pros. I realize there's so much I don't know and an immense amount to learn...but I enjoy the process and it is good therapy to do artwork. I truly am contemplating if/when I have a glass workshop naming it Happy Idiot Studio as I truly sometimes have no idea what in the heck I'm doing and probably backwards in my techniques....It's just fun for me.

And then back to CA next week for a bit (a few weeks) to deal with all things legal. Lawyers, accountants, appraisers! Oh, my! Lawyers, accountants, appraisers! Oh, my! (that's a reference for all you Wizard of Oz fans) Buzzards all. If one more person says "So sorry for your loss" and hands me a biz card or a bill, I'm liable to chew it into confetti. Sadly, all the settlement stuff is not like the movies where you're dabbing your eyes at the funeral, the next scene is the gathering of the family at the attorney's office and then a quick cut-away shot to cocktails on the French Riviera. Nope. Long and drawn out, tedious. Sigh..... (btw, not headed to Cannes. Headed back to the farm life with -- at last! -- chickens) There is light at the end of the tunnel, but not before the mucky quagmire of probate, etc. (Again, see the reference in blue above!)

Anyway, I just wanted to pop in and say I love you guys. Reading the posts have been a nice vicarious escape. Hatch on!

So good to hear from you Peeps! You've been on my mind a lot lately. I can totally relate to the mental picture you drew. My Mom had nothing in writing and Dad was too distressed to help with anything or even to answer any questions about what she wanted. Steve's Mom passed a few months before my Mom and, even though she had a will, her paper work was in complete disarray and family squabbles kept the stuff with the lawyers for a very long time. Actually it's still not settled but we just stepped back and decided to let it run its course. It just promised to be a miserable, stressed out affair so we quit even trying to talk sense to the one super strong personality that was causing all the stress.

That's great advice about getting stuff together. We've tried to talk to the kids about this since their Grandmothers passed but they won't let us get 2 words out! They are gonna have to listen sooner or later. Refusing to talk about it doesn't grant us immortality. lol

Latest thoughts on my mind...
You know my seedling project I have every year? Well, it's totally exploded. The seedlings are about 2 inches tall, and 270 of them have been pre-sold, including some that Sunny donated to my cause. I have 100 left, and I expect the rest of the tomatoes to completely sell out today or tomorrow. I told friends about my little sale, and the reservation list, and they jumped on it! Like crazy! So it got me thinking... Renting a commercial space would be more money than I would actually make, unless I managed to do this on such a huge scale that it was my full-time gig. But what if we did a Nevada BYC Cooperative or something? Seedlings plus eggs plus baby chicks plus crafts or jams/jellies? I dunno... This is really just how my mind works. Something is successful, and my brain goes crazy about it.

Russ and I decided that, in the very least, we'll do the seedlings next year and all profits will become "fun money," divided among the family by whoever does the most work.

I'd be very interested in that. We've kinda been doing that a little already. I like the idea of handing off my extras and picking up stuff I don't have at the same time.

Hello fellow Nevadans! I'm Jackie and I live with my husband and three children in Henderson, NV. We are looking at a relocation to the Reno area for my husband's job. Any advice on where to live in the area? We will be renting to start, since we still own our money pit in Henderson, and my hubby doesn't mind a commute. I would prefer to be in an area where we can keep chickens. My oldest daughter will be 6 and going into first grade, so good schools would be great, but we will also consider home schooling or private school if that is necessary. The most important things for us are the freedom to keep some critters and the ability to provide a solid education for our children!

Can't wait to be more active on the boards!

I've got 4 broodies. My 2 BRLW are quite serious about it.

I had my wellness check with my dr today. she had my sinuses xrayed--got the results back already and there aren't any abnormalities in them. Tomorrow i'm getting bloodwork done including a local allergens test. I also got an Rx for zytrtec D which has been so helpful in keeping my sinuses under control. I can get a whole month's worth at a time with that Rx instead of 12 days at a time.

I always feel like a criminal trying to buy that stuff but I really need it at certain times of year.

Are you being tested for the shots? I've been on the allergy shots for over a year now and they are really helping. They haven't disappeared but they are definitely better.
I still have to go in once in awhile and sign my name and show ID to get the stronger allergy meds though. Yeah it does feel like you are doing something wrong or at least a little suspicious when you buy antihistamine pills these days. haha

I thought I had lost one of my Black Ams this morning when I went to collect eggs. She was just laying there in the bottom of the coop - couldn't even see her face. After gathering the eggs I was going to dispose of her and grabbed her by the tail and started to lift up. Imagine my surprise when she started to squawk at me and bite me! It was good ol' 'Tude. Alive and kicking. Apparently she and her sister have decided to go broody again (sis was right inside the coop door when I opened it and was sitting on some eggs. She was none too happy when I shooed her off of them. One must have just been laid as the bloom was still wet on it!

Lol! I can just picture the scene she must have made when you grabbed her.

Haha Don't tempt me! I have a bator full of duck eggs right now and am having the hardest time resisting throwing some chicken eggs in with them. Actually I did throw a dozen super dark marans eggs in but I justified it by telling myself that marans come from a really humid area of France so they would probably be fine in the high humidity that ducks require. Probably not but who knows? Maybe they'll do better and I'll have to have 2 bators from now on. One for marans eggs and one for everything else. I'm glad they will be hatching just before the ducks though. I'm sure the humidity required for when the ducks are actually hatching would drown a chick for sure.

Shoot! I will have Olive eggers hatching in a couple of months and wouldn't mind some blue Orps but I am not close to you. I should be getting some blues hatching since I have 2 black Orp girls in with my lav Orps but so far I've only gotten a couple of blues hatch and they were already sold. So much for the genetics charts saying I should be getting 50% blues from those eggs! :/

Congrats on the new flock! They are soooo much fun! Maybe too much so. They are easy to get addicted to.
I wish I had some older birds available but I've only got chicks for sale and not enough of them to sneeze at either. They sell like crazy around Easter even though I won't sell to anyone looking for Easter "toys" for their kids. There are plenty of chicken folks looking to get new chicks and let the kids/grandkids enjoy them for Easter as well.

If you hatched 100 chicks, approximately 50% of them would be blue. Less than 100, the percentages get all messed up.
