Nevadans?

Wait a minute- there's another human "Amanda" as well as the hen? my newbie self is getting lost

those kittens are ADORABLE! I've given up on cats for now, as our last 3 have been eaten by coyotes... the downside of living rural.

I love the kittens. I would adopt one except we already have 3 crazy cats, with one that hates ALL OTHER CATS except Keaton, our crazy cat that's scared to death of us except when we're sitting or lying down. I think they were all traumatized by a trip across the country by plane. Poor kitties! Anyway, even if we didn't have three kittehs already, my parents would never allow it.

Anyway, I wanted to tell everybody that yesterday at 4-H I saw two chicks that looked like they had just been hatched under a broody hen. Needless to say they were really cute. But the crazy thing is that my 4-H leader didn't even know that the broody had been sitting on fertilized eggs! It does make sense, since he has three roos. But I was still amazed, as these were the youngest chicks I'd ever seen. Anyway, thought I'd share my newbie amazement. It was cool!

Rural is so very different. Growing up, nobody spayed/neutered their cats if they lived on farms. The cats had their kittens, and the raccoons/coyotes/wolves got to them, and though you had 3-4 litters of kittens each year on your property, the local wildlife kept the population down to just the right amount of cats to keep your mice down.

Oh! I just wanted to tell you guys I lost my Roxie, She was the one I was asking about Vent Gleet. I don't think that was what was going on. She just stopped eating and just laid around a lot. She lost so much weight, I don't think she weighed more than a lb. We thought maybe it was all the work that was going on here with are leach lines. She was the docile one and maybe it just scared her to much...you know chickens, things bother them, we would not think would. She died the day we went to Yerington to pick up some new chicks...so it is a little easier on me with the new ones I have to take care of...but it is still sad...she was one of my favorites.

Kim - it sure was a cutey.

Amanda - my Amanda is still sitting on her unfertilized eggs even though she's got chicks climbing all over her. You just can't tell how long any bird will last.
If I were you, and I'm not so its totally up to you, I'd take those eggs out from under her. She needs to get off the nest and care for the babies and teach them to eat and drink and all that life-saving stuff.

I'm sorry, poor chickie.

Duckies!!!!! (That is what you're referring to, right? If not, I'm in trouble.

Yep! They're pretty cute (can't believe I finally got a pic to load)! I'm still shocked about how many hatched!

Okay I am at the end of my rope here. Does ANYONE want to eat a bantam rooster??? Or anyone wanna try SILKIE MEAT??? I have absolutely had it and these two have for to go. They're tearing up my hens and beating up Mr Pants. Plus Chompy has the most ungodly crow.

I've heard that silkie meat is a delicacy in China.

There was an article in the recent Backyard Poultry about the woes of trying to raise chickens in Michigan. Very similar and the Right to Farm Act is pretty ineffective. Apparently back in the land rush days developers in Michigan passed a bunch of laws to prohibit chickens (in order to have a few chickens you had to own 5 acres and then were allotted one extra bird per acre afterwards) so that the townships could uber-develop their communities. The laws are pretty antiquated in light of the Urban Chicken movement and, frankly, sound more like an HOA process (sqwauky neighbors can nix your birds).

I'm back in NV for a little bit and then heading back up the S.F. Bay Area to continue working on Mom's estate. Light at the end of the tunnel, though, and thinking about (and looking on the internet at) more chicken-friendly relocation sites. I love the internet for this....a dumpy kitchen and flat ceilings can totally curtail my looking further. Saves a lot of my time and broker's time. Relocation will NOT be to Michigan!

Aubrey: Craig's List the silkies. You'll have a call in no time flat as black-skinned chickens are an Asian delicacy.

Sunny: Congrats on the news!

Great bunny, duck and chicken photos.... Still feels like Easter!

Thanks Dee!

Ok guys, looking for a breeding coop and run. My husband is way to busy in the summer to build for me. I REALLY had to work for my layers coop! Anyway... We get min 5 -6 feet of snow so I need a slanted roof, and sturdy. I went on Craigslist and there were a few that would not work for me. ( a possible one in Fallon) if anyone here builds coops or knows of one for sale could you let me know...
We live in south lake and will pay a bit extra for delivery or can pick up if.

I keep telling my husband he should go into the coop building business. He makes great coops but won't give up his day job and the Honey dew list is way too long as it is. He just needs to retire.
Hi everyone!

It's me, BigDaddysMom. I had the mods change my name to my farm name.

I've been following the thread, just not posting much. Just wanted to stop in and say "Hi" and let you know of the name change so when I do post you know who I am.

Aubrey, how are the wedding plans coming? I haven't seen any updates on it.

Missy, the ducks and rabbits are crazy cute. Sorry about the possessed one.

Sheryl, hope you get to the bottom of whats going on. I can only imagine how frustrated you are.

Sunny, have you been quiet lately or have I missed your posts? The BCM chicks I hatched from your eggs are SO beautiful! They have such beautiful feet feathers. I have one that has brown coming in on his feathers, is that good or bad? I really like him and his feet feathers and was thinking I would keep him but wondered if the brown on the feathers was a no, no.

I've been swamped. As for what a few brown feathers mean... IDK. As I said in our email before I sent the eggs to you, I breed for dark eggs. I don't breed for SQ. I feel like the breeding for SQ is ruining the egg color.
If you have questions about if any of the chicks may have DQ issues you can post those questions on the marans thread. It would be cool to find out if any of these chicks might be SQ but it would be very hard to tell at this age. They need to be past their first year molt before you can really tell what they will look like when grown.

Here they are! We lost one due to a 4-year-old child's mishap with the heat lamp. Poor little thing got crushed :(

But they got nothin' on my very favorite sort of baby- the human kind! My little guy is 3 months old today!

Awwwww!

Anyone out there looking for Phoenix? I have Golden and Silver.

AH! If I only had the coop space. I thought by now I would have the hoop house garden and extra coops done. None of them are finished.

Sounds like the classic case of Vent Gleet. I think you're on the right track.

Oh my goodness let's just call me crazy now. Actually I think the hospital already did. Anyways, I'm changing my flock a bit. I found someone who wants chickens and will not kill nor eat the ones I'm thinning out. I know which ones are staying and which ones are not. Boy was that hard but it's still the same ones after a week now so I guess I'm happy with that. I met up with Sunny today and picked up 2 baby chicks and put them with Amanda, yep, she's staying. I think if a chicken could cry she would have. I got scared at first because she was so mean. I thought for sure I did the wrong thing but nope, she was teaching them her different sounds but boy did it worry me when she raised her cackles at them and pecked them into a corner. Found out she wanted them under her. She didn't do anything hurtful just very stern they had to listen to her. Less than an hour later they were eating and drinking and she was cooing and watching every move they made all while still sitting on unfertilized eggs. I do believe this was the best thing I could have done for her and for myself. I needed something to bring me up and what can bring anyone up but of course, baby chickies! Thanks Sunny.

Okay, take care all and Aubrey, I can't wait for the wedding!

You're welcome Sheryl. I'm so glad they are getting along so well!

I can't wait for the wedding! It's gonna be a blast!
I hear y'all about Las Vegas and the locals avoiding the Strip. Heck, the only reason I even venture into the outlying casinos is the 2-for-1 dining coupons...And then husby and I will only play a $1 challenge as we're leaving (which is getting side-by-side same-style slot machines, putting a buck each in and on the count of 3 hitting the spin button to see who comes out ahead.) All the thrill appeal of the glitzy casino party lifestyle disappears when it's in your own backyard. Kind of like I'm pretty sure folks in Anaheim roll their eyes whenever they hear "Disney."

I'm heading back up to the S.F. Bay Area just in time to escape the triple-digits scheduled to hit this week....still it'll be sweat work as it's sorting and packing out stuff. It's like eating an elephant one chewy bite at a time....but the carrot at the end of the stick is thoughts of it gets me closer to moving and having a fab coop....and, of course, hatching out the little darlings to go in it. (Yeah, I'm a hatchaholic)

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!!!!!!

Naw... I lived close enough to Disney as a kid that we would watch the fireworks from the roof of our house. Disney is still waaaaay cool! We went every chance we got. But it has gotten way too expensive to visit any more. Tempted to hijack the grandkids and take them. Just need to save up for awhile.

Non-chicken topic here:
I have a source of grass-fed beef that's cheaper than Murray Ranch! A friend's parents are raising them. They're taking orders now, and say the cattle should finish out at about 1,200lbs. (I'm not sure if that's live weight or dressed out.) I told my friend that I was POSITIVE I could get some people together to go in on a cow. They do the butchering. I was going to offer to help butcher for a cut in price, but they hire someone, so that won't help.

I'm avoiding posting a price on here, even though it doesn't deal with chickens, so if anyone is interested, let me know and I'll PM you the final price. They do ask for a 50% deposit to secure one.

Definitely interested! Doubting that the fencing for the calves will be done any time soon. Nothing else is getting done on schedule. Just wonder if they finish with a Barley or similar grain? Purely grass fed can be a little tougher than finishing with a nice grain. Also when do they slaughter? Hopefully by 16 months. If so I want price details! In a pm of course. :)
Thanks Sheryl, great video! Wow the game cam is an awesome idea! I've always wondered what they were up to in their coop. Saturday I cleaned out their coop and put new straw in it. You should have heard the carrying on! Yesterday I went to water them and they had thrown a pretty fair amount of the fresh straw out into their run.

Can't get it to load. :( Not surprised I can never get videos to load here.

Yep my cat is indoor only. No front claws either so she wouldn't last an hour outside!

Yay Sunny I've been wondering where you were! Last Saturday I was thinking of you after cleaning out my coop and doing other chores all day - my back hurt so bad I could barely move. It was even worse Sunday. I really need a ranch hand!

Thanks Lacy - I didn't have to take eggs away from my chicken last year so I didn't think I needed to this time with this chicken. Everyone seems to be doing fine.

Lol My legacy. Folks think of me when their backs hurt. Are you feeling better now?
