Anyone live in Lyon county? Can't find any written ordinances for chickens. We live on five acres that's zoned for horses...neighbors have chickens all around us, so with Roos.....so I took that as a sign I should have 30+ chickens. Lol! Couldn't help it...darn chicken math struck again.

Yes I live in Dayton. The only restrictions from the county are based on lot size, and with 5 acres you have nothing to worry about there. Generally speaking with 1 acre or more you are good to go on just about anything. I'm aware of at least one area that is zoned for the 1 acre+ even though none of the lots are 1 acre in size. The only real problem is CC&Rs/HOAs. Not knowing where you are (it's a big county

), I couldn't tell you what issues you may run into. In my old neighborhood in Dayton, the only restriction is you can't have a commercial operation - I can't remember what the criteria was but it was in the tens of thousands, so thirty certainly wouldn't be a problem. BTW you can download a Master Zoning Map from the Lyon County website for free.

Sorry Seth, but nothing is available, the ones that were going are gone. It was mainly the PBR's and SLW's but they did take Sundae my EE. I'm very happy with the people who have received my birds, they all seem like great people wanting to have homesteads so I couldn't be more happier than that. Even Sylvia with her bad eye. I explained to them how she isn't contagious and such, she got a leaky eye when she was about a week old. I didn't have any chickens yet when I got her and I could never find anything in her eye to remove no matter how hard I tried. The people who took the chickens are not going to eat any of them, they don't eat meat, so it looks good there and they won't be killing any of them either. For some unknown reason though the ducks I was okay with if anyone wanted to eat the drakes, I have no idea why.

Love the new name - RulerOfTheSkies!

Any locals know about regulations about giving away/ selling eggs? Any laws I've found relate mostly to CA. I see a lot of people selling on Craigslist, but if I do end up selling or trading eggs, I want to do it legally (not sure if this is or isn't).

My girls are a few months off, but I figured I'd start poking around

Ask friends, family, and co-workers! They'll be all excited about healthy fresh eggs. I have at least 20 people waiting as impatiently as me and my daughter for the rest of my flock to start laying. :)

That's fantastic! It's great to know people are excited about fresh food. I'm from a city where food comes from the grocery store, it's really refreshing to see people appreciate the hard work that goes into it all.

Do you know if they have to be "sanitized" like in some states, or packaged in certain egg cartons, or any of that bull?

I sell most of my eggs to my co-workers. Once they try them they bug you incessantly for them! They basically take up all the extras (other than what I give to my nephew for his family) plus it helps defray the cost of feed.

OK, here's the scoop. Federal regulations don't apply as long as you are selling in-state. The state of Nevada only regulates commercial producers, which I think they define as 50,000 birds or more - for sure it's in the tens of thousands. That leaves the counties and or city governments. I know that in Lyon County where I live, I spoke with a county official who said they could care less. Many of the other members here are in Reno and I've never heard of them having problems. S&W Feeds in Carson City will buy eggs from you which they then re-sell. They even supply you with the cartons. They don't pay you cash but instead give you store credit, $3 or $3.50 per dozen I think. Bottom line is if you are selling to co-workers, friends, and other folks you know you're not going to have any problems. This ain't California (yet) - Praise God!!!

ETA: As for cleaning, I wash them gently in lukewarm water with just a drop of dish soap in it. They look a lot more appetizing that way - you'll see what I mean when yours start laying.
