Nevadans?

Oh, thanks. I was a bit worried. I set up a temporary nesting box for her while she's indoors and put an Easter egg in it also filled it with straw because I have been suspecting her of starting to lay since I posted about her egg song and her vent was a little moist. One question: if she is laying and the others are not, what do I feed them?
Continue to feed the chick feed but also start putting out oyster shell in a separate dish. Those that need the extra calcium for eggs will eat it and the others won't.

During our trip we stayed at a lovely hacienda B&B, Los Poblanos Ranch. They're also an organic food and lavender farm. Very pretty grounds to stroll around and we found this peacock on one of our walks. The inn provides ear plugs in each room with specific instructions about peacock noise in the morning. When we came back at night I saw him in a tree above the parking lot, which I made sure NOT to park under.

Aubrey, you can have one of mine. I have two that I got from chickee last year, and two pullets that were born in early April. I want to keep my lavender ameraucana, but you can choose from the others. Because I LOOOOOVE you!

Very nice peacock, what a lovely place you have. You're going to love it.

Yep, what Aubrey said - she's hot and is releasing heat, wings spread out and panting are signs of being hot. Put your hand over her to pet her and if she spreads her wings and squats then you know she's close to laying an egg.

So I just brought my girls inside (they were afraid of the storm lol) and Gretel is acting a little wierd. She is panting, and relaxing her wings so that she looks like a football player with gigantic shoulders. When I was holding her she pooped on me and it was white and not very much poo. Here's a pic of the shoulder thing:
What might this be? Is she sick? is this normal for 4 month old pullets?
As others have said, she's holding her wings out to cool off. Also, the watery poop is another form of cooling. They drink a lot of water when its this hot and it goes through them in a hurry. She's fine.

Hello Ron, and everyone else.
The Tobacco in Stagecoach was dead within two weeks. it never got watched on a daily basis. The stuff we grow in the back yard did fine and we have plants over a foot tall already this year. I hope our bees are doing as well as ours. when we visited you we had two hives. We now have ten and are working on 12 more. We need a place to put them.

As for those interested in honey. I will apologize right out the gate. we are very small not even what could be considered a business. So availability is a real mess.

I have a couple of ways you can contact us.

E-mail us at naturescandy(at)gmail.com

or call me at 378-0595 or my wife Kim at 378-0594

A couple hundred lbs is really not a lot of honey so I am trying to take it easy about finding customers. I want only a few that I can keep supplied rather than selling out in a week and then leaving everyone to have to find another source for local honey. So we are limiting the news to just friends and family, word of mouth etc for now. Many of the members of this group fall into the group of friends.

I am busy and don't get to check this forum often. You can PM me but it may be a few days before I even see it.

The best way to contact me quickly is to e-mail me at
thegreatpapason(at)netscape .net
It is best to just copy and paste that then change (at) to @. it is a mouth full.

It's nice to see so may of you still hanging out. I do not see many posts from Sunny. Is everything okay with her and Steve?

Hello,

I'm new to BYC and am hoping to start a flock in the fall. I'm in Las Vegas and have already started talking with those in the Viva Las Vegas forum.

I have been doing research on hatcheries and am a bit unhappy. First, the closest hatchery to me, California Hatcheries, that I could find does not have a good reputation. I am concerned also in how male chicks are handled in hatcheries, in general. And I really do not like the idea of shipping chicks in the mail. When I am ready, I think the best route to acquire pullets is through a local breeder. No roosters are allowed in the city and I could not bare to give one away (I get attached), so pullets are a must. I am willing to drive four hours or so (or possibly meet halfway?) to make a purchase.

If you think you might have something for me, please let me know.

Hey everyone just saw this ad on Craigslist:

Fernley Hay & Grain is hosting Fernley's first Chicken Swap and Sale this Saturday, June 15th from 9:30 am to 1:00 pm. Buyers and sellers welcome. There will be laying hens, chicks, started pullets, roosters, fancy pigeons, and lots more!

There's a map in the ad - right off I-80 - click here.

Hey Daniel - Sunny is still on here but she doesn't have reliable internet at her new place so she isn't able to post as often as she used to. I can't believe how many hives you have now! I still only have the one - hoping to get my first honey this year. Have you already harvested some? I was planning to get one more hive this year but dragged my heels too long. What are you doing for varroa control? I didn't want to use any chemicals so I'm using powdered sugar dusting. So far I don't seem to have any problems.
