We're just DYING down here! It seems a bit more humid than usual, too. It sprinkled for a few minutes here in Sandy Valley, but not long enough to cool things down. It just made the air extra muggy!
So far so good with my chickens. The teenagers were having a really hard time yesterday so I sprayed them, they didn't like it but it saved them, I saw their combs turn black in the front and they started gulping at the air. I then left the water on to cool down the dirt for them and they loved it once I turned it off and they started playing in the puddles. My house hit 106.5 yesterday and like Ron it went down 28 degrees in 20 minutes but it saved those birds. The coop is vented enough for them and I did get 3 out of 4 eggs yesterday and also today. Also, my hose actually melted 2 days ago so now I'm spraying them where it split now that's hot.

Ok, so the silkie is innocent. My ugly silkie hen is just that. She is not the one crowing. I found out this morning.
I was awakened at 5:39 a.m. and booked it out there. I took ugly silkie and put her in the cat carrier and put her in my office. Went back to bed. A few minutes later, I heard the crowing outside and went out to see who it was. It's one of my australorps--the big gorgeous girl. I kept two australorps. She is apparently taking over as the dominant hen. she sounds like a cockerel learning to crow. kind of scratchy and a short strangled sound. anyway, I put the silkie back out and squeezed the australorp into the cat carrier--I really need to get something a bit larger but that's what I had at the moment.
So, this is really poor timing--just on the heels of my newly downsized and quieter flock, I find myself with a crowing hen. I closed up the pop doors tonight and hopefully keeping her inside in the early hours will keep her quiet. in the summer i usually leave the pop doors open since my run is secure. I will have to see how this goes. We are going camping for 2 nights next week and I have to leave the pop doors open, of course. I have to decide if I want to sell her now to be safe or what. if she went with another flock, she would be low on the pecking order and wouldn't try to crow, from what I've read.

sorry for all of you farther down south. that sounds horrendous. at least up north it cools down fairly well at night. tonight feels a little muggier than normal. that thunderstorm we had the other day was wonderful.

Aubrey, just beautiful. The setting, your dress, your hot little bod, your exceptional looking friends and dog and I love the style of photography! But where are the pink flamingos? You and Mark look so happy and comfortable together.
If they came from the chicks that Sunny hatched from my flock, then the one you were thinking is a too, is. My flock makes the most colorful Roos!
We tried a regular fan first. I swear they were going to die of heat stroke when they went in to lay. Upgraded to swamp cooler to make laying easier.Didn't want them to do it in the yard instead. Its hotter than the pits of hell in our coop. 102' here at noon. Gag!
We have a swamp cooler, but our coop isn't big enough for it. We hit 111 today, had the mister on since this morning, and have hosed down the run every few hours.
I have three crazy broodies, 4 chicks but between mom letting two drowned and killing chicks fighting over the nesting box and squishing a total of at least 8, I'm happy for those! I finally took the excess eggs and put in the incubated and one has hatched. I can't believe those poor broodies stay committed in this heat! Although in this heat they could probably hatch on their own!
Here's a pic of one of the broodies and her chicks. I just added on more tonight. Two Marans, one black, one the most incredible blue chick, then an OE and the one I added tonight that's a silver EE with big puffy cheeks and beard and nicely feathered feet.

Hee hee, thanks! Trust me, there were flamingos everywhere. We painted them GOLD!
So far so good for the girls which I am surprised about. I was totally prepared to lose one or two this year to the heat but they're hangin in there! It DEFINITELY 100% helped that we moved the nest boxes outside into the shade, cutting down the amount of time they spend in the coop. Everyone is happy and healthy and we are getting a surprisingly large amount of eggies right now...
