Is that 5.00 per rooster ?

Hi! Not sure if I'm writing in the right spot or not, so if it shows up wrong, I apologize!!!

I'm a newbie in Northern Nevada, Gardnerville to be precise, and we just got our new chicks this past Wednesday. They've adjusted nicely to their brooder (rubbermaid tub for now) and seem to be happy. They are already developing feathers on the tips of their wings!!! :D

I am reading as much as I can on BYC - I am scared to death that I'm going to do it wrong and I so want my little girls to be comfortable, healthy and to be successful friends and layers. I am hoping to connect with folks in my area so that I can hear about their experiences as related to our specific area, climate, etc...

We are a homeschool famiily and my daughters are 13 and 15. Besides chickens, we have 2 turtles, some fish and a dog! :D

Have a blessed day!

Welcome,

Although Im in Vegas right now, I'm moving up that way this summer. The great thing about chickens, with some basic things, most will thrive.

Here are my suggestions for your new chicks:

Draft free brooder with a non slippery floor. I use shavings on the bottom and straw on top. This seems to work for me as the poop seems to just fall through to the shavings.

I handle my chicks quite a bit and have really noticed a difference in chicks that are handled then ones that are not. It was even more apparent when I shipped in some 4 week old chicks which it seems havent been handled a lot. They are getting used to me but the connection just isnt there. Now the chicks I raised are close and some even like to perch on me.

Good quality feed that YOUR chicks like. Tried Nutrena chicks didnt like it. So went to something else that they did like. Manna Pro. I grind my feed in a coffee grinder to make the food easier for the chicks. That also seems to ease pasty butt.

Watch for pasty butt. Lost a chick to it this time around so am more in tune. Had I paid better attention, she may not have died.

Clean water at all times

Watch your heat source. Dont cook them but make sure they are getting the right amount of heat. Chicks that are huddled around the heat source can't be out exploring the world because they are too cold.

I like to name my chicks as soon as a couple of weeks old. They DO know their names and respond once they get older.

Good luck with your new babies.

Hey, I'm in Gardnerville, too! I have three chickens that I raised from 4-day-old chicks. Everything went smoothly. No deaths, no sickness. I encourage researching, and if you come across a problem you can't identify, ask around on here! People are happy to help save your chickens' lives and are very knowledgeable. They can even help you name a chick, as someone on this very thread helped me name my Snow White when she was a chick that I had just brought home. It's great to know that other chicken people are in my immediate vicinity!

We are also "homeschoolers" :) here in south shore. This is a great place to feel comfortable asking questions. Congratulations on your babies! I also use plastic clear totes with great results .

Alright, I caved and bought an incubator. My six year old found an egg still warm, and did all the research on the work and time, and read words like 'oscillating' and 'thermostat,' so it seemed silly not to buy it. (also, I'm a sucker.)

Anybody need to borrow incubator space? I wouldn't even have thought of it, but the kids running the Poultry Swap suggested it. I have the full size circulating fan 'Little Giant,'
it will hold forty eggs and I am putting a VERY MAX of ten in it. Running it for the current total of two eggs seems ridiculous.

WARNING: this is my first time hatching, so PLEASE no super-expensive high-risk eggs! I am putting only my Easter Eggers in, and if I have extra chicks believe me they will be given up here!

Hi Eggxelent!

Yay! :D We're in the Ranchos - you? So nice to meet someone in our area! :D What kind of chicks do you have?

We had a casualty just this morning. Not sure what happened exactly, but I am guessing that she was smooshed by the other chicks because she was very flat.

So we took the chicks out of the rubbermaid tub and let them be in the big box (about 4x4 feet). They seem to be comfortable, happy and doing fine. I also installed a wooden dowel about 3" off the floor just in case they decide to try their roosting techniques

We got our chicks for CAL Ranch in Carson as they had the largest variety. The girls' wings are coming in nicely and there are tiny tail feathers making an appearance as well. Can't believe how fast they grow!!!

We are familiar with south shore as we are scuba divers and work on the Lake Tahoe Invasive Species Project from around May through November. :) Homeschooling makes it nice because the girls work with us on the boat! :D

Glad to meet you!!!
