Nevadans?

Ok, a bit off chicken topic but it has “bugged” me for almost 5 years………….where are the earthworms?

There are NONE here in my valley. We have dug deeeep – and not one worm. Not one in my garden. Not one in my compost. Are there any in the city limits of Reno? Maybe it is just too dry?

I've seen one in the 5 years I've been here and that is further down here in the valley. When I lived in North Valleys I never saw any and we dug a test trench 3 feet wide by 15 feet long by 12 feet deep! Worms don't like that DG up there and they don't much like the clay/DG mix down here either. The good news is that most of the sporting goods stores in the area carry bait worms and I love to buy them every once in awhile to toss to my gals. I throw out one at a time and watch them freak out over trying to get a piece of the poor worm.

Ok, ok, I know I shouldn't enjoy it as much as I do but if you saw how entertaining my girls are to watch when trying to steal a worm and then trying to hide from everyone else who is also trying to steal the worm from them, (picture 1 chicken running away from 19 other chickens) it is just hilarious!
If Tibetans are right then I know I'm coming back as a worm.

Hey Vegas folks, any worms down south?

So the worms have left the Reno area

Watching the flock swarm after one of their own playing keep - away is better than any tv show. (sometimes I feel sorry for the worm too, or lizard)

As a kid, we would use fish eyes when we ran out of worms - the eyes were the best bait (DH tells me it is illegal now)

those chicks are soo cute! And in lemmon valley we have a ton of earth worms, but that might be because my dad has been fixing the soil for 10 year.

Plus the love all the old wood chips from the chipper.

Apparently today was a cold one here in Hades cuz I got an egg from my 3 yr. old GLW! It was a bit oddly formed but who's complaining? It took months to get here. I got her in mid-November and she, and her 3 friends, were all in the middle of molting. I purchased them sight unseen for $5 each and was quite a bit shocked when I saw them. I wasn't so sure they were worth the money. Lacey is beautifully feathered out now and finally ready to stop bein' a freeloader! Yay!

This is a few days after she arrived, poor thing. Her back and behind were bare, and she was quite small and looked underfed for her age.

This is Lacey just last week, sitting pretty! Her comb, wattles and face simply lit up within a matter of days.

At long last, an egg from someone besides my 5 EE's!

She looks 3 times her size and very happy. I would say $$$ well spent.

Laceynoelle - tell your dad I am jealous

Our property, that we excavated, was in Lemmon Valley (43 acres) and no worms there!
