Nevadans?

Sunny, They are very small. the three 5 day olds fit in the palm of my hand with room to move around a bit. They don't stay that way very long though. The 6 week olds are not much more than a fist full of bird.

Hello Nevada!
I have a very excited Granchickie asking me all kinds of questions about the eggs we just candled so I NEED YOUR HELP!
big_smile.png

There have been 5 eggs under our broody hen now for about 13-16 days, I think.....I marked the eggs with pencil and now I cant read what I wrote.
I've been keeping a diary that isnt helping because of using pencil on the eggs, now my egg # and the dates arent matching up.

SOOOOOOOOOO...........heres the question.
During candling Egg # 5.....we heard chirping and could see alot of movement.
IF my numbers are matching at all, this egg would have been put under the broody on 6-8.... making this day 16 of development.
IF the chick has to break thru the air cell BEFORE it can make a chirp........whats happening??????
Should we expect an early hatch?????

These are all Bantam Eggs..........do they hatch differently? Less time???? I wouldnt think so........but I'm confused as to why we're hearing chirping so early.

PLEASE HELP BEFORE MY GRANCHICKIE GROWS GRAY HAIR WITH WORRY

Well, I start the first day with a quail waterer w/marbles just until I see each chick drink then I switch to one of these homemade waterers. I just got a water bottle with a fairly flat bottom that can be drilled into and inserted a chicken nipple. I got a bunch of them from QC supply online. I used them to make our automatic water outside in the hen house and run and had a few left over. I love them cause they are sooooo clean! I get a really big water bottle, fill it with water and a some apple cider vinegar, and use it to top the water off as needed. I leave the lid off but you could cap it as long as the cap has a hole in it to allow flow. When I put the waterer in I tap each chicks beak on the nipple. It really only takes one curious chick and the rest will follow. They are all usually pounding it within minutes. I LOVE THEM!!!

the chicken nipples....

the water in the outside brooder....(right before I raised it up. I had some banties in that hatch that needed it a bit lower than usual.)

...and I still need to get pics of the one outside with the grownups.

Penturner - nice chicks and congrats on 100% hatch!

Knemeyer - I got some "Araucana's" from them 2 wks ago!

Timmy - I'll be setting more eggs this weekend...so I'll have chicks in 21 after that.

Bloomie, If the egg is chirping it means the chick has broken the air cell inside and is breathing now. Basically hatching has started. How long that will take is very random. it could be hours or even a couple of days. But day 16 is really early. My Seramas have been hatching on day 19 lately so you may be on track for something in that neighborhood.

Vegaschick, thanks. I have a dozen of the nipple waterers for the larger birds. never tried them yet for newborns. I love them as well. very little space needed for them. I will have to get a picture on how I made them. I still don't trust all the birds have figured it out though so i keep a regular waterer in with them also.

Knemeyer.I lost track of names about two clutches ago. My kids keep me straightened out.

IF Egg 2 in my diary AND the chirping egg are the same egg, then today would be day 19.....SOOOOOOOO the hatching could take a couple days? That would line up with day 21 being Friday.
The chirping would make sense

All the other eggs are moving like crazy.......and they appear to be at, or about, the same stage.......and by the candling pictures we've looked at here on BYC, they look to be about 16 days.
I had placed several more eggs under the our broody AFTER we had that poor chick die in the shell........so there may be a 3 to 4 day difference.
I was trying put a good variety under her to make sure we got at least ONE viable egg.
Seems we have FIVE viable eggs!!!

Sooooooo, IF this chirping egg hatches, and all goes well, what do we do about the other 4 eggs?
Should we remove the hatched chick IMMEDIATELY? Or will the hen continue to set on the other eggs until they hatch?

Hey everyone. Do any of you want some chicks? There are some at North Valleys feed rather cheap because theyre trying to get rid of them, and just guessing, i'd say theyre 3-4 weeks old. Theyre one of the white laying breeds, california white or something. My dad has california whites though, and theyre really nice.
So to go to the swap, do i have to bring any chickens, or can i just show up and say check it out? I dont have any i want to sell just yet, and i wayy wanna see penturners serama. Good job on the hatch, by the way. and tell Heilo i said the same to her. I love your shiney white chick in the picture. Is it so shiney always, or way that the flash? lol how cool would it be to have a true silvery chicken. hahahah...
okay, um. oh yeah. Coryza. Guess what? The saurkraut is working. Wierd, right? Its llike the magical cabage. I think its seriously helping. Theyve had two jars, and i'll give them another tomorrow. I cant find any vetex. or was it petex? anyway, i cant find any.
Everyone root for Denny hamlin this weekend in the race. He's my fav driver. And if you dont watch nascar, do it anyway. :] (Ah hem. De-prived)
Is anyone going to the blues brew and bbq this weekend? Its friday and saturday, down town, and free. well, unless you buy beer or bbq meat. Then it'll cost stuff. like money. But it'll be fun. I'm trying to get to go.
lol okay, if anyone has read this entire nonsencical (spelled wrong.
