Oops. The RIR should be laying a darker egg than the other breeds you have. Oh well, my hatchery RIR's eggs are not as dark as they should be either but I can tell them apart. At least they are laying!

here is a picture of the snow in my yard this morning! My ducks wouldnt even come out!

I have been locking the chickens and duckies in the coop at night, 1) to keep them warm and 2) because the fence is a bit rickety on the yard, and i havent had time to fix it yet, so i dont want a wondering coyote to catch a free meal. When we built the addition on the coop, we used 1/2" Chicken Wire, but originally we used 2" Wire, which is really flimsy. we bought it cuz its cheaper but its not worth it because you will be replacing it soon.

Congrats on the new eggs!!! I got 2 eggs yesterday - 2 of my Orp/Dels are laying, one Orp/EE should be anyday now (started squating on 10/31) - the other 3 I'm thinking another month. I'm just so happy I'm getting the 1-2 eggs per day! Our eggs are a purple/brown color - really pretty.

I'm seeing some condensation on the window in the coop this morning - should I be concerned?

Ron - the jury is out on the water heater - I checked this morning & it didn't feel warm but it had only been on about 35 minutes & there was ice in the bowl. I will have my daughters check it later this morning.

Jeeper my yard looks exactly the same way. It is flocking cold out there this morning. Surprisingly the waterer did not freeze up, funny how when it snows it is not cold enough to freeze water. *LOL* Anyway, the girls are having a ball out in the snow this morning. They are actually playing in it like a bunch of kids. They all gave me this look this morning like "Look Mom SNOWBALLS!" and then I reminded them they had feathers and I did not so I was going back inside.

I got woke up to the dogs going ape crazy this morning. When I went out there there was a loose, uncollared white and tan pitbull trying to get into my chicken yard. Thank God for strong fencing but it is just one more reminder of another thing I have to keep an eye on. And here I was thinking how blessed I was that I did not have to worry about coyotes or bobcats messing with my chickens.

Aubrey, I just ordered Buff Orp chicks so I have a ton-o-chicks and would love to take yours but I am already at 54 in total so I cannot add anymore to my numbers otherwise I would pick up your little girl.

I know this is a silly question given that we all have chickens but I know that some of you do not have layers yet so if you need eggs just for eating please PM and let me know. I am getting about 9 a day now and I am being overrun with eggs. I had a lady that wanted to buy some on a regular basis but she got a cold and I have not heard from her since. Just let me know if you need eating eggs.

Winter is coming up and with the coop almost done and the chicks doing well I am going to have a few mins here and there during the day so maybe I should take up baking again. Last time I got the baking bug everyone went on a diet and that ended my baking career. heh Diets really are bad for ya...

It's so exciting, when you're first start laying! It seems like we've been waiting forever! I'm thinking my Silver Laced Wyandottes will probably be similar as the barred rocks. I also have Welsummers which I believe will be darker and then the marans. Are your's laying pretty consistently? My EE that lays the blue lays just about every day but they are small and the other EE laid two defective ones and one small-medium olive green one, but it's been 3 days since that one.

As some of you know I thought I had the most picky birds in the world because of the whole refusal to eat cracked corn fiasco my girls were going through. But I finally figured out what the problem was, a cat. I went out early one more last week and caught this cat red handed digging all of my chicken feed out of the feeder on to the ground. It was actually eating the layer pellets and throwing the corn out on the ground. I thought it was my girls all this time and was going pretty nuts trying to figure out what I was going to feed them over the winter to keep them warmer but now that I solved that problem we are back on track. I have happy, warm, girls and my feed bill is back down where it was before.

So yes, cracked corn is a great way to keep them warm and it will also keep them from eating three times as much of the other feed to try to stay warm.

Thanks Eglantyne! I will get some for them. It just started getting real cold here in the evenings and I have noticed they are eating like crazy!

yep and I'm pretty excited about it too! So far three are laying and I am getting at least two eggs a day. My orp has just begun squatting but my e.e. Isn't anywhere near laying, I don't think.
Someone layed an egg last night on their perch and it fell all the way to the ground and didn't even crack!

I'm soooo jealous of your blue eggs. Hopefully when mine lays they will be blue. They'll probobly be green which is fine, I'll probobly just be dissapointed if they turn out to be khaki colored
