Thanks Aubrey - I'll find out from my good friend where you can get free pallets, they are given away at some business close to Reno and I believe the free days are Tuesdays but I'll find out and will let you know.

Hello from Reno as well! Free pellets?

What kind of chickens do you have?

Hi everyone. Today I saw Martha actually lay an egg in the run, she didn't do anything except look dumb founded of what just popped out of her vent. No noise, no strange behavior, no panting, no aggitation just no nothing except pop an egg on the ground. I'm trying to figure out how to train her where to lay but how do you train a chicken where to lay if you don't know they are going to lay an egg?

No, you don't need to train her. She'll figure it out on her own. Like you said, when they first start laying they are surprised and can't quite figure out what's going on. But soon instinct will take over and she'll start laying in the nest box, or some other suitable dark, cramped space.

You can put a fake (plastic, etc.) egg in the nest box to encourage use of that space.

Well she's a bit backyards right now, she's laying in the run and then runs into the coop and stays in the nest box for 1 hour and then leaves. She is so funny to watch when she does this. Yesterday there was an egg in the box already when she laid in the run. I guess she'll figure it out.
