Nevadans?

Elizabeth, I work at the University as well. From you post I pretty much know what building you are moving from and where you are moving to. I am one of the people that will be unlocking your building this morning. I may have shampooed your carpets last Wednesday. I cleaned three offices anyway and waxed 4 floors last week. Actually that is not part of my job anymore but I know how to do it and everyone is short handed anymore.
Just saw your post and went, Hey I know where she is talking about. Be nice to those movers. They are having a real hard time right now.

ha ha! small world. that's funny you are here too. thanks for shampooing the carpets! we are in 3 offices along the hall so i bet they were the three you did. we are nice to the movers and bought them pizza and sodas for lunch yesterday. I know they are just doing what they're told to do and they have been helpful. we do not blame them. But some of the higher ups are just not very organized about making these moves efficient. They are spreading people too thin. So crazy. We got my office furniture in order this morning and my computer just got set up. Now it's time for unpacking.

Yep we went to see it tonight. Now we just need to borrow somebody's flat bed trailer to move it. Steve and Dottie's Son are both working on that end of things so hopefully we can move it early next week!

Ok I don't normally post about these kind of things... but, I can't help myself! We went to the senior dance tonight and I had arranged to sing "At Last" with the band for Steve's b-day and they don't ever practice so I had to just wing it with them but it came out great!!! Steve was so surprised! The band called me up saying "Where's Sunny"? and Steve is like what the ___ are they calling Sunny up for? I didn't hear this part cause I headed right up to the stage as soon as they called me but one of our friends did and she responded by saying, "sit down, shut up and listen". LOL!!!

Now there are a couple of people there that know I can sing but no one else had any idea. The band members were acting like "isn't it cute she's gonna try and sing with us?" (BTW this band is by far not the best band I've ever worked with so it was a little insulting that they were acting like I was gonna "try" and sing with them) But all I said was "I performed for many years in the Bay Area so I'll try not to embarrass you all too badly". Ok most of you have not heard me sing but, um, mmm, not sure how to say this without sounding too egotistical but uh, I'm not half bad.

So I'm enjoying the whole scene and not letting on what level I'm at on purpose cause it's fun for me, IDK why but it is. And they tell me "ok we'll play a simple intro and you just do the best you can..." Well I have to admit it took me a measure or two to completely relax but even from the first I could see the shocked looks on their faces. I don't know why people are always so surprised. I guess my talking voice doesn't match my singing voice and folks are kinda floored when they hear me sing for the first time.

They didn't play it exactly the way I usually sing it but I adapted and it came out pretty dang good! They were so excited by the time I ended the song that they whispered for me to stay put while they rocked on an instrumental interlude then had me belt out the last half of the song one more time. It seems silly that I enjoyed this so much because one of the reasons I got sick of performing was that the attention got to me (and Steve) but I guess because these folks are all my friends it felt really awesome.

And Steve was beaming! That was the best part! He was totally surprised and he looked so happy! When we met I was performing every weekend so he's used to that but when you're on the job it's different. Sometimes he said he couldn't even see me cause folks kept cutting in front of him (he's not very tall, poor guy) and I couldn't sing to him then cause that's not what they're paying me for but tonight was different. I sang to him the entire time and he was grinning ear to ear. When I got off the stage I tried to run over to him but about a dozen folks mobbed me before I could get to him but they were polite and just wanted to express their feelings about the performance.

He later said this was the best present he had ever received and he will remember it for a very long time (high praise from him, he usually hates whatever we get him for his b-day!). Not too happy that the band asked me after the dance what other songs I knew, I mean I love to dance and don't want to give that up, or keep singing for free, but it was still a blast. I guess there is a part of me that misses performing (a small part, trust me).

Anyway I'm still pretty pumped from tonight so I'll probably be horribly embarrassed by tomorrow that I gushed so but I can always erase it later.

Hope you are all having a great start to your weekend as well!

Sunny, that is when the singing and playing is at it's best. When it all gets to serious it takes the joy out of it. I sing every day at work. In the early morning as I walk through the halls. Often people come wondering in and I just keep singing. I have had a lot of people say I have a good voice. I just say it's sort of like walking. you practice it long enough and you sort of stop falling down eventually. Wish I had been there I would love to hear you sing.

chicharomirinda, I think everyone is spread thin. I know our department was not even told anyone was moving into that building until 2 days before boxes started showing up. I am the Maintenance repair person for the custodial department and they had me waxing floors and shampooing carpets. Basically not even almost my job but you do what you gotta do. Yesterday they had me picking up recycled paper. That job is not even in my department. Who knows maybe they will have you all shampooing our carpets before it is over.

Wholly Cowa! Wow Sunny & Penturner too! You guys are the best, I love when people have fun doing what they like to do and I also love the ones who step up and do the job the best they can even if it's not their job. I can't stand people when they say - Not my job! They are the ones who complain the most.
