Nevadans?

I'm sorry Genny. I never knew her, but Ranchie seemed amazing from that post.

This thread's been so dead, I hope some of you come online soon. I've got a strang problem. One of my hens got atacked by somthing. All the skin on the back of her neck is gone. I can post a pic, but it looks like there's a puncture would in the middle. I saw a dog do somthing like this once, but this girl was in the pen, and it's dog proof. Cats can get in because there's a tree next to the coop and its not covered, but this is a full grown SLW. Well, she still alive, and I'm not sure when exactly this happened but it looks pretty fresh. I didnt hear a chicken alarm from to rooster though. Any ideas? And should I cull her or try and stretch the skin around and sew it up? Or leave it? It looks like she's still got all her stuff she needs for living, but there's one severed somthing and I have no idea how important it is. She's breathing fine though. The only thing that tipped me off is she was standing fluffed up in the corner when I went out instead of coming up to the gate, so I think she's getting enough blood to her brain. She ran when I tried to catch her anyway.

Catch her up tonight or early tomorrow morning and stuff her in a crate (dog kennel). If you can put her in the garage so she has a bit of warmth (being by herself and injured).

If she seems ok and is eating and drinking - I would let her heal in the crate. Leaving the area alone or smearing honey on it (unpasturized - so raw honey) - honey will keep the area moist and free from bacteria.

I wonder if others in the pen attacked/scalped her for some reason (rough rooster sometimes accidentally starts it). The hole in her head could be from chicken beak pecks. I would get her away from them until she is better.

Thanks, I've never heard about the honey trick. I've got her in a cage, and she seemsto be doing good, so I'll just wait and see.

Hi, been really busy. Glad you popped in for a bit, Genny! I don't know you in person yet, but I appreciate your contributions to the thread. You have so much chicken knowledge to share!

I got the latches on the door and moved them out this morning. Then this afternoon I finished putting the hw cloth over the soffits. They are happily running around. They don't know what to do with so much space. I put their brooder light out there tonight. I will leave that in there for awhile at night. not sure how long to do that but we'll see. The coop is not completely done yet but it is predator proofed and ready for the chicks inside. Still have some work to do on the outside. later i'll get the roost in for them and the nest boxes but that's not needed yet of course.

we are waiting for Jose to get home from the gym. the kids' costumes are in the trunk of the car so we can't go trick or treating. i forgot to remind him to come right home tonight and i didn't realize the costumes were in the trunk from preschool this morning. oh well... it's not too late yet. Laila is a unicorn (i made the costume last night) and soren is a pirate.

happy halloween! i will post some photos of the chicks in their new digs later.

We were down in the Bay Area this weekend to celebrate Steve's b-day. I threw a surprise party for him and we had a great time. He was completely surprised and was really thrilled. Unfortunately we found out later that night that his mother had passed away so we stayed over an extra day to take care of things and will need to go back for the service.

Lacey congrats on the job that is awesome!!!

Tyler and Sheryl (or your DH anyway) on the Pine Wood Derby wins. And congrats on the 7000th post Tyler!

Genny so sorry to hear about Ranchie! She was an amazing woman! I have followed her posts from time to time and she was always ready with a laugh or at least a reality check.

Laila was in the coop with me for quite awhile this afternoon while I was putting the hw cloth in the soffit. She had a buff orp on her lap for quite awhile. didn't have the camera with me that time though.
