Yes there are quite a few of us on here. The "Unrested".

No Lacey I have no intention of showing my dogs but their lines are impressive (kind of an accident with the first one) so I do want to be sure to breed so that anyone buying puppies to show will not be put off.

....and because you want aubrey to have puppies to play with, right?

Absolutely!!! That's the main priority!

So question for you guys....I plan on keeping my new babies in an 8 x 10 aluminum shed which is located in a really large dog run....I'm not sure of the square footage, but it comfortably kept 3 german shorthairs, and has two trees. From what I understand, I can keep up to a dozen hens, but they frown on roo's and I'm sure my cranky ole neighbors head would explode...anyway, the question is what do you think would work best for covering the run and do I need to do something to the floor of the shed, like maybe raise it?

Ya know i thought about buying an aluminum shed because they are more in my price range than the wooden ones. some of the people here on BYC suggested that we insulate it because the walls of the shed in the summertime could reach ungodly temps. Raising the shed on some blocks would be a good idea. It helps keep out yucky creatures and keep a sesspool from developing underneith, however with a metal shed im sure you wouldnt have to worry about woodrot (unless the bottom is wood).

The best thing to cover the top of the run is hardware cloth, but in my last run i used the 2x3 welded wire. Its my favorite stuff....

where exactly are you located? Ive gotten away with having a roo downtown and now live above kings row and have had my fair share of roosters without complaint (although i did think i heard one of the neighbors yelling shut up to petey on one of his louder days, lol!)

I am in the midst of BFE....Battle Mountain. I called animal control and asked what the laws were and she told me hens as long as they were contained

which I thought was weird since I've never seen any poultry of any kind running the streets, but maybe I'm just not that observant. I probably should have clarified with her about the roo's because I really like them and because the girls could probably use a little extra protection as we have some kind of hawk that hangs out in a tree about 2 yards down she's a big brazen hussy....which is why I want something really effective to cover the run

.

The shed is on a large concrete slab and so far the floor has never gotten wet unless I went in and hosed it down. I was thinking of insulating with bales of straw and also putting the straw on the floor, and yeah I'm actually more worried about the heat than I am about the cold, however, there are 2 trees in the run and one in my neighbors back yard that all provide shade, so I'm thinking they should be ok in the summer?

Boy, you guys have been chatty!!! I took a digital break last night after work and just got back on now. It's good for me to do that and i should do it more often.

Sunny, hope it works out with the girl dog! Love the idea to name her Delilah.

Artemis_Nix, you might want to see if you can see what the actual regulations are for your county and city. It may not say anything about roosters at all. I think the straw is probably a good idea for your shed for a little insulation in the winter. We have not built our run yet but are planning to cover the top--maybe with welded wire but maybe just with some bird netting. We have a lot of hawks in the area as well as owls--although the chickens will be in the coop at night so owls probably are not an issue during the day. The bottom couple of feet of the run we are going to use half inch hardware cloth and then welded wire on the top half.

I gave the chicks some cantaloupe guts and rinds this morning. They were quite curious. I'll be interested to see if they have eaten it when I get home. About half of them are using the new roost I built. There were 12 on there last night when I checked and 8 squished on the tiny baby roost! The rest were on the floor.

Well, you have room. One Bred By Exhibitor win and you'd be hooked! I started showing when I was 12 and there were little kids athat ran circles around me. LOL Late I'd start on a breed and the most fun I would have was to start a different breed and get the upturned noses and then beat the pants on them in BBE. I've gotten 1st through 3rd tice with Rottie pups and somehwre between 8 to 10 times waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyy back with my GSDs. Gotta remember that when I was raising Shepherds though, you could see Rin Tin Tin in a 15 gen pedigree. LOL

Wait! That's who Delilah is? Three and no call name?

Sunny if that dog is not OFA or Penn Hip certified, please be carefull about buying her. Has she been bred before?

They're all cute!

Sunny I posted a pic of Galahad on the California thread. Not the greatest pic since he's penned up tight and kind of shadowed, but it's there. Been a rough day and that's there too.
