Nevadans?

Goodness, looking back at that post about crop surgery, I realized Chloe will be 5 years old this spring.

She came thru this molt wonderfully and I expect her to start laying again probably after January when the light starts to lengthen. Last year, I think she laid well - generally 4 eggs a week.

Don't let anyone tell you that.........ehm.......older birds don't lay.

I have never quarantined my ducks......but then I have not gotten any new ones for close to 7 years. Mine just keep hatching ducklings. They can get external parasites if they don't have access to bathing water. My ducks bathe every day - first thing in the morning when let out of the coop, and then even a couple times during the day. They don't care what the temp. is, and I have even had ducks with ice on their feathers until the sun warms them.

Just checked on the chickens because it's their first nIght with the heat lamp and they are all wide awake chatting and walking around. Will they be able to sleep???

I think your chickens will settle down and go to sleep when they get used to having the light. Mine do. But if it becomes a problem, you might try a ceramic reptile heat emitter. They are safer, don't give off light and they last 5 years

I use them for my chicks.

How are your new babies doing? Recent pictures?

Man! I wish I'd been on here a week earlier...I'd have loved to have stuck a few eggs in. In fact, my dad and I had been talking about getting a hold of you about hatching out some mutts of ours before I get rid of the two boys I let grow out this summer. Oh, well! Now I'll have to be satisfied with helping you get rid of your extras.

I'd love to have some Wheaten Marans and I may know a few other folks who'd like some too...and not just only the girls. I have some friends I get eggs from when mine go broody and I am unashamedly stacking the deck as to what kind of mixes I'd like to hatch out from them. I helped them get a BlueCM roo from ke_ben and now their BO roo has passed I think they'll be in the market for another boy.

I'd be glad to pass along the surplus... I'm just in it for only three French hens. And if someone wants to take the boy-boys off my hands too, well, YAHHHHH!

It saves me from doing deeds. Any interest in the Salmon Faverolles? (Now, here I am truly counting my chickens before they hatch....)

Okay okay heres some pics!

I actually put the barred rocks, white crested blue, and frizzle roos on craigslist this morning and theyre already gone. I had also put up the red crested red rooster but his personality is just too darn sweet and at the last minute i couldnt give him up.

outgrowing the brooder! although its much roomier now with -4. They have also been weened off their heat lamp and the heatervents have been shut so they can get used to the cold.

I do wish i could have kept the barred rocks because they were gonna be huge but they arent really what i want in a full sized roo.

the red cresteds are my favorite personality wise. when i went to put "dustin haufman" in the box for the man he just stared at me and i couldnt do it, haha.

the white crested black are totally stumping me. On one hand they are both pretty big and have massive crests. on the other hand they have no red on their faces like the other do.
one of them has a really funny "swoop" hairdo. I tried to capture it in photo but it was hard.

i was surprised by how large blue's wattles were already. I chose to give him away because he is just to skittish.

Those ceramic heaters are SWEET! I have one I purchased.........hmmmm...11 almost 12 years ago and it is still going strong. I use it to brood chicks and now it is out in Woodstock's coop to help warm Woodstock during the day. (he comes in to the house to sleep at night)

My sweet girl Sylvia passed away this morning. I made her a little thread: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=609840

so how many do you have left of your batch of chicks, aubrey? They are so cute with their assorted hairdo's.

I will need to get some of those reptile heaters so I can wean mine off the light at night. I feel like they still need some heat out there for awhile this winter but it would be good for them to get used to being in the dark at night. i have 2 infrared heat lamps going now. maybe i'll switch one of those to the reptile one.
