Nevadans?

I really don't want to post in the Emergencies /Diseases / Injuries and Cures forum. It can be an infection perhaps. Her tummy is very red and slightly room. I still have Pen-G, I can start her on it. It's worth a shot. If I post in the forum everyone is going to ask if I wormed them lately and this could be worms. It's not worms and I'm not worming her.

I was thinking infection as well last night when I saw her red tummy but she was in the really warm water. Her tummy wasn't red this morning.
I hope you can figure it out, sheryl and help her. I wish I had some experience and knowledge to offer you.

Please forgive my lack of knowledge on the etiquette of forums... I have a question, I live in the County of Washoe (South Reno) and we are getting our first chicks next week. We are still in the process of planning our coop. I searched through the thread but could not find my answer so I am sure I will ask the same question as many have before me... I have cranky neighbors, short of calling the county to find out ordinances, does anyone know of any problems with having chickens in the county. We are on over half an acre, already have horses. Can the cranky neighbors make trouble for our family? I don't plan on having roosters... (well maybe one) ;)

If you're within Reno city limits, the law says they cannot
1) be neglected,
2) be a nuisance to your neighbors.

There is no law prohibiting roosters or limiting the amount of chickens you can have, as long as they follow those guildelines. Heck, a neighbor 2 streets down from me (a mile from downtown) has a couple of full-sized goats in his backyard.

As far as what defines nuisance... I'm not sure when the law enforcement steps in and takes sides on what, exactly, a nuisance is. We avoided that issue by putting the coop in the spot furthest from any of the neighbors, and not keeping roosters. So far, we've had no complaints... but we also bring everyone adjacent to us a few eggs every now and then, to keep them on our good sides.

One of my clients had people complain about her dogs. She got a couple of letters from animal control, then a visit. And then she was told that was about all they could do. As long as she was trying to keep a lid on the noise and the animals weren't being abused, the cranky neighbor had about hit her limit to her powers of destruction.

A couple of people here have dealt with cranky neighbors. Hopefully they can give you more advice.

If you're out of city limits, I'm not sure what the exact rules are, but I know it's more relaxed. It's generally accepted that, if you live outside the city, you're going to have neighbors who keep loud animals.

Hi Jann,
welcome-byc.gif
and the Nevada thread! I'm one with a cranky neighbor but she hasn't done anything and isn't one who looks up the laws and stuff neither.

I'm not sure about Washoe County area but there's others on here who do know. It sounds like you'll be just fine though.

What type of birds are you getting soon?

Hello,
Thank you! We are limited on space because of the 1/2 acre and the horses, 1/3 of our property is an arena, then the side without the cranky neighbors has the horses. They hate horses, nothing they can do, but complain about dust etc etc... although we clean once a day if not twice, and will keep the coop clean.

I have lots of space on the crank neighbor side. We have a spot that will require a bit of work for the coop has it was going to be another raised garden area, currently has compost and manure, closer to the neighbor but not right next door. We have dogs and I believe they are going to be our biggest issue as they like to catch rabbits, birds, and squirrels. I am hoping they will get used to them being in there in their coop and eventually become a non issue. (heres to hoping) I will use electric fence on the outside of the coop to keep our dogs away. Our cats don't go in the back yard because of the dogs, as most other creatures... night time could be different because dogs are inside. We will have a completely covered "run" area for them so they are safe. We ordered 25 from MM and they will arrive at the Vassar Post Office Monday :) Our brooder is ready... just to build the coop now.
We ordered:
Barred Rock
Light Brahma's
Buff Rock
Rhode Islands
I have been lurking and trying to learn, I think maybe over think the whole thing sometimes. Nonetheless excited for this adventure with our hens.

Hi, Welcome!
frow.gif
I think you should be fine, even with cranky neighbors. The county isn't likely to get involved. Good luck with your chicks! It's so much fun. I really love having chickens. Feel free to jump in on the thread anytime. No need to lurk. We're a friendly bunch.

Welcome to the Nevada thread horseshowmomnv!

I have added you to the opening post.

In answer to your question, outside of city limits there are no laws stating you cannot have chickens except that you cannot have 10,000 or more without putting in a special waste disposal system. The nuisance laws are not well defined and, unfortunately, are interpreted differently depending on who you talk to. The consensus when I spoke to the county was that as long as you kept the chickens on your property and did not have problems with smell and noise that was at such a level that general laws came into play that you were just fine.

Here is the problem I had with the county. All buildings require a permit. Yes this includes chicken coops and horse shelters. If your neighbor were going to cause problems for you this would be the sticky area. Unless you live in an HOA. They have their own set of rules and regs (CC&Rs). Good luck with your new peeps!!!

The coop is almost chicken-ready, though it's still far from beautiful. All I have left is attaching the run and nesting box doors, sealing a few gaps, and painting the inside with a primer. Still no pictures of it. Hopefully I'll remember to snap a few tomorrow, before my husband takes the new camera to Manila and I'm stuck with the grainy cell phone.

How is everyone doing today? Sheryl, how's Patty tonight?

Thank you!
My horse shelters are not permanent, I have been told that as long as they are not permanent I am ok :) well, no one complained.
The chicken coop, we are looking at 8x8 it was my understanding that if it is under 120 sq feet we don't need a permit, is that old code? Have you had any problems with wind? I am thinking of using concrete blocks as my base and not sinking them into the ground that way it us up off the ground by a about 8 inches (I think they are that tall).
No HOA's, sounds like we are in good shape as far as the neighbors complaining, we will clip wings so they can graze through our yard occasionally when the dogs are not present.
I am sure I have more questions as we get closer, and after our babies arrive.
Thank you for your input, much appreciated.
