Nevadans?

When is the celebration happening in Niles Canyon? Is the road still all twisty.

Ron that sounds good with me on your EE's, just let me know how much, when and where.

I believe I read on here that chickens don't have capsaicin receptors, and that some people put cayenne pepper in their feed to increase egg production? Is this true? I have two dogs that like to eat chicken food. I'm trying to tally how many eggs we get for a bag of feed, and it doesn't really help when the dogs squeeze through the chicken door and eat the food. So I figured I'd pepper it up.

I read the samething and I saw it on a tv show regarding an aviary and the mice was eating all the feed. They put the crushed red pepper in it and the mice stopped eating the feed. I put some crushed red pepper in my chicken feed and the chickens were showing signs from the heat of the pepper. They started breathing rapidly and started drinking tons of water. Their beaks were open wide from it. I don't ever put it in their feed anymore once I saw this happening to them.

I keep track of all my eggs on a speadsheet, only because of John being anal about this so I know how much food versus eggs I get. I'm going through 100 pounds of feed a month when Wynonna was alive so I was feeding 8 chickens and 3 ducks with that weight. I don't know how much I'm going through right now with the babies and not having Wynonna but I will know once I go through my next 100 pounds. I just bought the bags last week and am using 50 pounds of it right now.

That's the canyon. Yeah that part is twisty, but Old Niles is by the old train station parallel with Mission. I'll find out when it is and add it to the first post on the CA thread.

Hey guys! Sorry Im not online very much. Its been a busy week, phew! In fact just today we left the house to "run a few errands" at 10 am and didnt get home until 6! sheesh. Im too young for this! LOL.
anywhoooo, Pam I id read you comment about tapatalk and i promise i will be checking it out this week for sure. Thanks a ton!

News from the coop.. Mr. Pants has finally started crowing! It has been going on for about a week. He is just perfect too. Its a very quiet short crow. Nothing like when gilbert first started. In fact if youre inside watching TV you can barely hear it during silent moments. I think he stays! I know it will get a little louder but I dont think by much. Also he looks like hes dying everytime he crows. Like when an 80 year old smoker has a coughing fit. Its hilarious even. Hes such a goof.
Lil' Frizz, our red frizzled cochin has finally matured! She is HALF the size of the other cochins and has just started laying the teeny tinyest egg i have ever seen. Shes adorable.

The olive eggers are reaching a stage where they are finally looking like big chickens. They also look so different and have quite different personalities. I am looking forward to their eggs HOPEFULLY by May.

The cluch I have in the stairwell now is getting huge too! The cuckoo marans is twice the showgirls size but still likes to hide under them whenever i come around. I havent had the time to be with them like I had wanted, but its okay. I find there is a lot of good bonding when theyre old enough to go outside and i have to carry them in and out every day. Thats how our polish got so friendly the first time around.
Anywhooo so im thinking i have 3 roos and 2 pullets. WHICH IS GOOD! I think the marans is a roo, and one of each color showgirl is a roo.
Here is the Marans. We have named him Gregory Peck. I hope he is as cool as mr pants and gets to stay.

Julie the showgirls are looking really nice. I think when you take the roos back you should seriously consider keeping the partrdge at least for breeding. I think theyre going to look really nice (although since they only carry one nn gene their offspring with a silkie will definitely only be 50% nn. I had forgotten that since petey has two copies of the gene ALL of his offspring will be naked neck.) I have never had such an easy time sexing chicks as i have with these birds. The size differences are immense and combs are already developing. Julie, their toe spacing and foot feathering is fantastic. you should be very proud.

pullet left and roo right

pullet

roo

and the blacks (blues?) I think our lil fluffer head is a pullet. pullet left, roo right

Just for fun I found a young picture of Petey for you. He was a little a** when he was little. ALWAYS biting my fingers and being a total jerk.

Missy Im sorry I havent been by with any grounds lately. I plan on taking a big bucket with me on tuesday and wednesday and filling it up for you to make up for it :D

So I finally started selling my eggs and the numbers look great! The girls made enough last month to supplement their feed and shavings for this month! go girls! I even got 12 eggs yesterday and am so proud of them :) which brings me to another thing....

Sunny I have been seriously considering another dark layer and another blue layer to add to my carton. Ive only been able to put one marans egg in each one I sell and it would look much nicer if I could do 2 instead. Also midge and darlas eggs are getting so light that they almost look white and its still a long time out before moult. SOOOOO if there are any culls coming out of redrock anytime soon let me know. I may be interested in purchasing some.

Sheryl, Ill see you tomorrow!

Hi ron!

Seth, your chickens leg looks less like curled toes and more like a leg issue to me. It could be caused by the tendon having slipped the entire knee joint. I had a beautiful showgirl named peggy who had that problem except her toes curled into her body. She lived hapily until we moved into the new house with the giant yard. She couldnt keep up with everyone else and was much happier when she was penned in with them. Otherwise she lived a very happy life.

Quote: I had a link in my post - 100th Anniversary was clickable. It starts this weekend but there are events all summer.

I'll PM you on the EEs Sheryl.

Hey Aubrey - I've been wondering where you were. Awesome pics - you have the most eclectic flock, it's great!

Thanks Ron, let me know about the EE's. I didn't even think about clicking on the link. I don't think I'll be able to get down there though. I have a lot going on right now.

Yep, I'm ready for you tomorrow Aubrey.

Well, henzilla Wynnie has been moved into my house where she's sitting in the dog crate/brooder and John gave her 2 duck eggs for her to hatch herself this morning. I didn't think she would remain broody or even bother with the eggs once we moved her inside but I couldn't have the drama like we had yesterday all of the time. Justin my drake always makes sure his ladies get the best no matter who he needs to chew out or chase down and grab their wings. The ducks will be getting their own place this year and then everything should be more calmer again. But henzilla is still growling and sitting away so this is a great sign. John's going to give her 2 more eggs tomorrow and we are done with giving her eggs.

Incubator is steady now and it looks good again, let's hope all is well here.

well sounds like there are 2 incubators going

good luck

I took the day off to get some stuff done outside since it was such a nice day and tomorrow's forecast is not so good. I got some of my garden beds prepped, pruned the raspberries and did some garden clean up. Then we put the wire over the top of the run. There is a little bit left to do on that but it's almost done.

The other day I saw one of the EEs lay a cream colored egg. So that solves one mystery. Looks like I have 2 green egg layers and 1 cream color layer. Not sure if the 4th EE is laying and lays a brown egg or hasn't started yet. Oh, and we got 12 eggs today! Our first dozen in a day.

good to see you post on here again! hope that app helps byc load better on your phone. cute photos! now your marans does look like a boy. In one of the photos before he looked a little darker but maybe it was just the lighting. I'm pretty sure I've got one of each. My boy has lots of white and the girl is much darker.

I'll have to look at those events later but that sounds like it would be a fun trip! If anyone is interested in going to one of the events that are a ways off yet (I need a few weeks notice to plan).

I believe I read on here that chickens don't have capsaicin receptors, and that some people put cayenne pepper in their feed to increase egg production? Is this true? Lots of folks swear by this but I've never heard of using the flakes, only the powder. I've never tried it though and after Sheryl's experience I would try just a small amount of the powdered and watch the birds carefully. I'd never heard of the birds reacting to the powder but better safe than sorry.

Sunny I have been seriously considering another dark layer and another blue layer to add to my carton. Ive only been able to put one marans egg in each one I sell and it would look much nicer if I could do 2 instead. No problem. I should know in a month which ones I'll be keeping. Only 1 of the girls so far is giving me a too light egg. I mean it is so light that she wouldn't qualify as a marans (don't worry, I wouldn't give her to those of you that want some colored eggs). She has only given me one egg though and sometimes it can take a couple of eggs for the "paint" glands to kick in. So even the culls will have some very nice color on them. I think you are all going to be very pleased with your cull girls.

I didn't have a lot of hope that these eggs would be as dark as I was looking for since the breeder was known for SQ birds rather than egg color but I did stress to her that egg color was all I cared about and so far I have quite a few very nice dark eggs!!! She (the breeder) really came through for me! I am very happy. It is a very nice start on my project!

On my list of folks wanting culls I have; Kim, Pam and Sheryl who have already paid for theirs and then I have Aubrey down for 1 or 2. I also have Lacey, Elizabeth and Missy down as having expressed a possible interest a while ago although you all have more chickens now so you probably don't need them right now, which works for me, plus I will be hatching out some of the darkest eggs soon so anyone else that wants some can get some in a month or so.
