Nevadans?

So how was your trip to Florida?

We had a great time! Thanks for asking

The girls wore us out at Disney World!! We spent from 9:30 in the morning until midnight one day and visited 4 of the parks in that time frame. It was so nice to be able to spend time with our son and his wife. We were so sad when they moved to Florida

They are doing great with their careers there, so I am happy for them.

I know that no one on this thread (except maybe Seth) is interested in my Polish bantams. I am working on building up my flock right now. I only have one buff laced pullet and one WC chocolate cuckoo pullet. I plan to buy eggs from a couple BYC members here in California soon. I REALLY want some WC chocolates!

Oh, and I am going to buy Buff Ameraucana eggs soon from Gary Ramey to add a buff rooster to my flock so next year I will have pure Buff Ameraucanas. His buffs lay a nice blue egg!

Oh I'm so glad you had a great time! Sounds like so much fun! Yes the Buff ameraucanas are so pretty! Let us know when you get some breeding stock established.

It's so funny how people say it's so windy here. Yes, it has been windy here more than usual but it's actually not windy as much. When I lived in California I lived in Solano County in a town called Suisun (soo-soon) names for an Indian tribe there. We had wind 10 months out of the year each and every year. If there was wind in the morning then the wind was going to be worse in the afternoon or it would die down. If it was nice in the morning then we knew it would blow in the afternoon. It wasn't windy in April or last 2 weeks of September first 2 weeks of October which was Indian Summer.

Has anyone ever had chickens with wheezing/clicking or runny noses that have NOT been sick?

I have 4 chicks, about 8 weeks old now, in the same brooder. Two marans are wheezing, and two wyandottes have runny noses (clear, not cloudy or gunky.) They are all still very active, no fluffed feathers, and still have gluttonous appetites. No chicks in the other brooder have any of these symptoms.

I clean the brooders every two days, scraping everything out and replacing it with fresh bedding straight from a closed bag. Today, though, I put in a little straw... first time ever giving them straw. This is the first time I've noticed symptoms, and that's because I was picking the chicks up to show my husband and he said, "That one has a really runny nose."

I've had chickens with sneezes before, last fall when the weather blew in really wet. But they didn't have runny noses.

Entire chicken history:
last April: brought 5 chicks home.
last November: got 2 silkie chicks from Aubrey.
February 2012: brought home 6 pullets from Elizabeth's flock.
March 2012: brought home chicks from Candy and Kirsten's flocks. I'll have to look up my message history to remember if the wyandottes were from Candy or Kirsten, but I know the marans were from Kirsten. That was over 4 weeks ago, with no symptoms until now.
last Saturday: got one chick from a friend. The chick looked totally healthy when she got here, and the friend would have told me if she looked sick at all.

My chickens have had no other exposure to other poultry. These particular chicks have been indoors, except for a few warm days outside, and they came inside at night.

If anything had come in from my friend's flock, they would be having symptoms over there. Though the chick I got isn't feeling well, she has no respiratory symptoms. She's fatigued and fluffed out, but isn't making odd breathing sounds, and has no nasal discharge. And I highly dought she caught anything on the ride over.

Any ideas? Hopefully I'm freaking out over nothing, and it's caused by the straw. Then I'd have just one chick to worry about, with a totally different set of symptoms.

Plus, the shipment of new babies comes in tomorrow.

Runny noses in chickens is not normal and should be taken seriously. Most illnesses can be treated easily and most meds can be purchased at the feed store but you need to figure out what it is. I have a chicken health book somewhere. I'll go look for it now.

OK the book says that an antibiotic is usually given when chickens are sneezing/have a runny nose. Apparently this is the most common complaint for backyard chickens and is not quite as serious as I feared. They said that only in extreme cases will a chicken die from a respiratory infection and that the antibiotic given is very effective in treating this. The medicine they mention is Baytril. Since it is an antibiotic you may need to get it from your Vet. Except in severe cases the medication is put into the chicken's water and no shot is needed.

The chicken that is not sneezing but lethargic may still be suffering from the same thing. With no other symptoms it is hard to tell for sure.

Sarah has some beautiful little Chocolates. Are you getting any from her?

OK I think this hatch is done. I got 3 out of my eggs and one for my neighbor, but that little guy isn't doing too well. Not sure what to do about him. So only 4 out of 12. A couple had quit or were clear at lockdown, so I guess it's better than my 6 out of 104.

I lost 3 chicks from an older hatch. They started piling and when I went to change waterers they all cam running and the 3 were sufficated. One was one of my lavender eggers. So bummed. I did hatch out 3 of the from this hatch though. One is blue with feathered shanks. YAY! Those and lavenders and black with purple through the feathers are what I want. Hope some of these lay those pretty eggs. BTW I haven't gotten one in almost a week. Not sure what's up with that.
