Nevadans?

Cute, cute, cute kids, human and chickens (and you too Elizabeth)! And I agree the light brahma is a pullet. They look rooish when they're young but she would have a much more pronounced comb by now.

Had a funny thing happen today. When I went to check on the broodies, one of them had moved an egg out from under her. I saw cracks all over it so I took it. I was surprised to find it was pretty heavy so I sat it down to carry down to the trash and to decide if I had the guts to eggtopsy it. I took it in the barn where it was dark to see if I could candle it (it's about day 7). I don't have much experience but it wasn't clear. I decided to give all the chickens some scratch and fresh water to see if I could get the broodies to get off the eggs so I could count eggs (about 30 between the two). It worked and they both ran out like crazy girls and got some fresh water and treats. Back to the egg....I decided to just peel back a little part of the egg at the crack and to my surprise it popped off...only there was shell still there! I peeled another piece and same thing! Turns out this egg got moved into the shell of a broken egg...same color, same size! I don't know if the chicken thought it was broken so she moved it out from under her or what but I picked off most of the stray shell and put it next to the girl that had the least amount of eggs. Checked back when I went to lock the coops and she took it back. It'll be interesting to see if it stays put or she moves it out again.
I totally didn't see this post last night. hmm. that is a weird story about the egg. Glad your back is doing well but you better take it easy!
$45???????????

I paid $28, got free shipping and free citric acid. Even shipped it's cheaper elsewhere. That's a horrible price. Just sayin.
thanks for all those links. $45 is really high.
Thank you all! I hope you guys are right and Happy is a pullet, seems strange that the same age chicks mature on a different time table, non of the others have any red. Happy is much more assertive than the others, maybe she is the alpha hen! If Happy turns out to be a roo I think he would then be look for a new home if he continues with the aggressiveness.
Otherwise we are having fun with them, especially since they are outside in the half done coop! LOL!!!! Hopefully getting windows installed soon, thankfully a friend gave us two!
Wish I would have had chickens years ago!
Have a great day, enjoy the weather!
Jann
good luck on your coop. I still have some things to finish on mine even though they've been living in there since october. i love having chickens too. they bring a lot of joy and satisfaction.
Thanks Elizabeth I'm getting there. This is the first day I really feel better.

what is this stuff you guys are talking about?

Ok so please give me bantum and standard chicken stats and a mixed stat if you can on these 2 coops. which holds more?
5x5 coop with a 5x5 run?
4x5 coop with a 6x5 run?
I think they are alll about 6 feet tall on one side and slant to 5 feet tall on the other(coop and run)

MY guess is pullet

I would agree with sunny and go for the larger run since they spend lots of time outside.

I always cross-reference with Amazon, since it's linked to my checking accounts. And, honestly, a lot easier to order from. I found Oxine for $35, and I fake-ordered to check shipping... no shipping charge.

Seth, are you building your coop, or buying it from someone else?

Elizabeth, I'm a little late responding, but I'm so glad Splash found a good home. He was so beautiful from the start, and just got even better. Now I just need to find a good home for Blue and Burger. Blue will be fully vaccinated within a month, and never actually came down with the disease. I'll probably have to offer Burger on Craigslist, with a full disclaimer about his history, and see if anyone takes him. Or we could butcher him. But I hate butchering the beautiful ones.

Edited to include photos:

Yep, I'm pretty sure it's a boy. That's a huge comb for a little dude.

But isn't he pretty?

Here's the whole brood, eating their morning yogurt mash: bottom left is Korma the brahma. Clockwise from the top: Bite-Size the silkie, General Tso the superfluff cochin, Burger the hamburg, Taco the RIR, Kung Pao the leghorn, Fried Rice the speckled sussex, Finger the minorca, Dijon the brabanter, and Strip the turken.

Elizabeth's silkie, cochin, and brahma look almost exactly like mine. But here are Dijon the brabanter (I'm so glad she survived! Love the mohawk!):

and Kung Pao the exchequer leghorn, censored to remove her gesture of appreciation for the photo op:

I had thought I added Amazon since it comes up at the top when searching. I'm just trying to personally stay away from it right now, so maybe I didn't do it for that reason. I've had bank issues when I've used it. Like someone getting my card and pin and having to replace my atm cards 3 times in 3 months. Not saying for sure it was from there, but it happened when I made 3 urchases over those 3 months and I'm testing. So far I haven't been hit again, so IDK. I hope it's not from there. But yeah, you can get great prices on it there too. What you found alone was $10 cheaper than Sears. I also saw the Revival link there and it was listed for $19, but I didn't really check it out.

I found it for $24.99 - don't know about the shipping though.

Wow, that's too bad. They're my old standby because I've never, ever had problems with them. But maybe I just cursed myself for saying that.

But then, as I explained to my son as I lent him my very nice word processor to take to school: always assume there is a crook in the bunch. Most people aren't, but the larger group you get, the more chance that it's dangerous to leave your stuff unattended. I guess the same would apply to the thousands of people who have access to our online information, no matter how "secure."

so cute! Burger's comb is quite big and red.

It may be tough to find homes for your roos but you never know. It seems quite hard to sell them around here even if they are fancy. I don't think most people here really care too much about breed.

Hopefully your silkie is a girl but if not, hopefully I have at least a couple over here so you can end up with one. I had to photoshop out some poop in my photos too. I think it was the brahma who gave the gift this time.

Kim, do you have a link to the website you purchased from?

Sunny, I moved them, didn't lift them. My thighs were sore from pushing them!

Ron, can you talk or is your throat too sore. That's quite a surgery for an adult I hear.

Oh that should be fine then, I hope, cause I use my legs all the time to shove things around.

Jann I've had 1 super agressive female in my flock before. They are no fun either. She fought with the roos just like they fight each other! Hackles flared, jumping high with spurs and feet up scratching. Boy was she mean! I hate to get rid of a good layer but I don't miss that one! Post another photo in a week or so. I want to see how those saddle feathers look then. I still think Happy might be a roo because of those 2 long feathers angling down on his/her sides but sure hope I'm wrong on that one.

Kim thanks for posting all those links! That is so great of you!!!

Revival does have it for 19.99 but you have to order several bottles to get that price. For 1-3 bottles the price is 24.99. I couldn't get a shipping quote without entering all my info though.

Glad to hear you are feeling better today Ron! It's unusual for folks our age to still have their tonsils. I still have mine. I take it you had some recurring problems with them? They won't take them out these days without a good reason. Hope the healing process goes a little faster for you! Sounds painful!
