Nevadans?

Sorry to hear about your little chick Pam. Nonni told me to not cull any of the injured or sick babies. I didn't cull little guy because she said to leave him alone. It's up to you though. I heard cutting the spinal column is a fast way but I've never done. :hugs

Candy, what a very pretty egg. I can't wait until next year to get more babies from you.

The word I said spelled backwards was dessip. I don't believe it is a cuss word but perhaps they do.

Missy, I hope we can get together soon so you can have your good stuff for tomorrow.

You did say a bad word HAHAHAHAHAHA ROFLMAO if BYC heard me at work I'd have lots of those little stars.

That's only a bad word in your mind I believe. I don't think it's a bad word. I guess it's where you were raised then. idk

today i'm working on building the kids' playhouse (i.e., future extra chicken coop

) . I'm framing the walls and should be able to get them up today. luckily it is small enough for me to lift the walls by myself since Jose is off with friends watching soccer. it is 4x6 with 4 foot walls. Then I'll make another raised bed for the back yard along our fence. I stocked up on compost, potting soil, etc. yesterday so I can fill that up and plant today. If I get that all done, there are plenty of other things on my to do list. I also baked some bread. I'm going to try to do that regularly so we don't need to buy bread anymore.

I wonder why BYC blocked my word here. It wasn't a bad word or anything of the sort. How strange.

Good news....another Polish chick hatched, beautiful all white and a very nice, round, large crest. These girls play their cards/chicks very close to their chest so I'm seeing different chicks every time I peek, but I think I have 3 Polish, two WCB and one White....I'm thinking I saw a solid black too but I'm not sure.

Bad news is that the chick that I helped take the shell off came out today and it seems it's having trouble standing. I think that it will need to be culled. Would someone mind telling us (and in these unpleasant cases, when I say "us" I mean my husband) exactly what the procedure is for humanely culling a few days old chick. I'm sure he will take care of it without my input but I'd like to give him pointers since it's not something done before around here. Missy, I know you have, unfortunately recent experience with this if you'd be willing to share. If people would rather not post the delicate info then please PM me or guide me to a thread.

sorry about the chick.
I don't mind sharing, though some people may find this gruesome. But culling chickens is gruesome, period. My husband used a pair of garden pruners. They were strong and instant, cutting through the spinal cord. It actually worked so well, and so humanely, that we went out and bought a larger pair for when we need to process the larger chickens.

Sorry you have to do it. It sux.
that is good to know something that works good. the unfortunate part of owning chickens...

hope your yard sale is going well today and that you sell all your seedlings! Yours are so nice and healthy.

I had a wonderful and exciting find yesterday and thought I would share it with those of you who have buff x wheaten pullet chicks from me

This tiny, blue, first egg is what I found yesterday from my first generation buff x wheaten project pullets. The parent hens lay a green egg and by crossing with the wheaten rooster that hatched from a blue egg I got this beautiful, blue green egg

And this pullet is only 5 months old!!

So this is what you should expect to get from your pullets

Here are some pictures of my newest chicks I am keeping from the hatch I did for Sunny. I LOVE the little splash wheaten pullet

Beautiful egg and chicks! Can't wait to see what the eggs look like from my pullets.

It's not in my mind either. But then again I don't really consider most words they bleep out on TV bad. In fact I say all the so called "bad words" :) I can out cuss a sailor

Uggh! Make that 2 broodies! Yes, I just had 2 girls hatch out eggs and I have 2 MORE broodies! Sigh! I'm madly trying to find local (Las Vegans) with roosters so that I can get these girls cooking something other than wooden eggs!

Congrats on the cutie splash and the beautiful blue egg! Nice!
