Nevadans?

Missy, you had weeks of unending tasking to try to save your chicks. I'm sure your body is just finally reacting now that it can. I always get sick the week after Christmas because for months before I'm going night and day getting my store ready for Christmas and then the busy days. It's predictable after all these years in retail. I hope that its just post traumatic.....or your pregnant......

Haha most definitely not that. It would be a miracle.

I'm glad things went well at the store. I hope you get feeling better soon!

Sunny I'm so excited for your Penedesencas!!! Actually, I'm extremely jealous.

I'm hoping those that are recuperating and feeling bad will soon feel better!

Missy, I would totally come help you out if I were closer...no really! When my dad was in the hospital a few years back, fighting for his life, I was stressing out about what to do with the beets and chard! That sounds stupid, I know, but he was in the hospital for 49 days! The cheapest 50# layer feed here is $17-$20 a bag. It's cheaper to get All Flock for everyone and supplement with oyster shell. All Flock runs about $15 for 50#, but I have to have my brother get it from Utah on the weekends at Cal's Ranch. We don't have one here.

BigDaddysMom (is it Pam?) I'm so interested in how your broody mama drama works out. I have 2 broody mamas and 2 straight up broodies right now so I feel your pain!

Loved the eclipse photos!!! Awesome!

I haven't been to 1 Stop. I checked prices at Feed World when we were there for the swap, and it was a few dollars more per bag. Green's was pretty comparable for feed... not enough difference to even sneeze at. Plus, their cheap laying feed is in the bags I like to grow potatoes in! How much does 1 Stop charge for a bag of the cheapest laying crumble... does anyone know? I pay $13.something at Green's or Sierra.

I'm going to call the doctor tomorrow to get Joe seen, and to get blood panels done on us both. I just downed an energy drink so I could take care of my only client for the day, and I feel good enough to make dinner. Which is great, because the kids insisted on bickering and whining during the massage, and now have to write sentences for each dollar that the massage was worth if I had lost the client. Good thing she has kids!!! So far, every client that they've "endangered" with their behavior has been a parent or grandparent, and I've not lost any. So far.

Yea that could totally disrupt the calm setting you want for a massage.

I don't remember how much cheaper it was but it adds up for me. Especially the dog food! It was $8 cheaper per 50lb bag! I'll check tomorrow on Layer feed and get back to you.

WOW! My cheap stuff is $22 for #50 and $28 for #80. I can't touch the expensive stuff. This is hard enough.
I'm sorry about your birds. Sure seems like a lot of people are having problems this year. A ,member on the CA thread is having problems and she lives not to far from me. Well, a town or two anyway.
22 dollars!!!? OMG how does anyone afford to keep chickens!!?

Sunny, sorry to hear about the egg eaters. I have had some problems on and off until I caught the blue jay with the egg in his mouth, trying to escape with it. I had caught chickens eating them and thought it was the chickens but the blue jay was opening them. The blue jay pecks a round hole in the egg.....but it sounds like you've seen the two culprits. Hopefully the move will throw things off and they'll quit. My daughter had egg eaters and they got those things you put in the laying box where the egg rolls out of the box into a holder below. The chickens would lay and egg and search all over trying to find their prize.

Thankfully I did well at the store today. Worked 6 hours and came home and did my chores and, knocking on wood, I'm doing OK. Would be wonderful if I could go back for at least a day. I was feeling scary depressed...it's just not me.

When I went up to check on the chickens the broodie that I let out was in the hen house back where the chicks were hatched and scratching up a storm. She came running out when she saw me and I opened up the pen with the other broodie and chicks and she ran in and started cluckling. 3 of the chicks she hatched came running....isn't it funny they knew her? Then she went over the other broodie and pushed her way under her! It was SO funny, the other hen was completely on top of her and then one of the chicks jumped up on top of the other one! They were stacked 3 high!

I got a picture but with the two hens being black you can't really tell what's going on, but the cutest thing. I was glad the broodie let her back in.
Yes if getting rid of a few roos does not take care of the problem then we will have to invest in some of the roll out nests. They are not cheap! We could make them but the to do list is getting way out of control so I'm not about to add something else to it. Steve is awesome in his willingness to tackle new challenges but I figure our time is worth quite a bit too.

Glad your back held up so well. I hate to see you push too soon though. However I know how frustrating it is and I am a terrible example since I'm not great at taking care of myself either. Course I'm paying for it...

hahaha! That is one silly girl! These are the polish right? Not big heavy orps or anything like that...

well dixie is in for the night for one last bought of recovery

no babies yet hopefully in the mornin

She'll probably have them in the middle of the night when we are all sleeping. Can't wait for pics!!!

Lol I guess that means they are a good breed? I don't know much about penes except that these are another line of French birds (at least the gal said this variety is, which I can't even remember the name of right now) and they lay a dark egg. This is the only breed of dark egg layers I haven't tried before. I sure hope the eggs are nice and dark. They are much sweeter than my marans are. Not that the marans are flighty or mean but they are a bit standoffish.

I use game bird crumbles right now. It's a higher percentage of protein and cheaper. All flock is great too! $17-$20 still sounds crazy expensive to me.

Sunny, the mama's are EE's and 3 of the 11 chicks are Polish. I was concerned someone would get squished, but from what I could see, most everyone got out of the way. The ground is very soft also but I'll feel better when they're all accounted for in the morning. After I fed I checked on them and they were snug next to eachother like they have been. I don't know how long the space will work for them though.

How common is it for hens to go broody together? I've been reading around the site and it seems lots of people experiencing the same thing.

Broodiness is contagious. I had 6 trying to sit in 2 boxes. I had to break all of them.

Sunny I could better afford them if I could sell them. For some reason I can set up a sale and then they end up buying from one of 2 breeders or people they know. Very frustrating. I do without a lot just to feed kids and animals. I wish I could find a place that had much cheaper feed that was close by.

I'm going to be setting up a notice account with my daughter's RE office. Since whatever I can get has to be cheaper than the dirt it sits on, I need to get instant notices for what I think I can spend. Don't know if I'll even get one, but I have to try. With the new restrictions here, I already feel like I can't breath.

OK busy busy week. I think I'll try to sleep.

Oh Kim, I'll bet you're worried after that woman you met and then to poor Linda over on her thread! I can't imagine being told to get rid of my chickens....and in such a short time too. I sure hope you find a place and ASAP!

Kim, Reno doesn't have the laws like you see in California. I know you are worried about the snow but it's really not a big deal here.

I know, it's heart breaking the lady Linda thought was her friend really wasn't. It kills me what Linda has gone through. I'm glad you did well today at the store.

I don't know the stats but if I had 1 go broody it seemed I had 3more the next day. I thought it was the season but maybe it is like a yawn. Very contagious!

Hope all the babies are doing well!!!

Good! Those email notifications on real estate listings in your chosen areas are great. You can set up what you are looking for and only get notices for those properties that fit your criteria. No wading through a bunch of listings that don't meet your specs!

BTW what happened to Linda? This isn't gryeyes Linda that went to court and won is it? Has something else happened? Oh Dear I hope not! She is such a sweetie!

Really? I buy feed that is packaged by A.L. Gilbert Co. You know, that huge feed place in Oakdale? I pay $13.99 for a 50lb. bag, and that's after it has been transported over the Sierra to Nevada! It's really good stuff, too. The scratch is even better than Purina, and not just by a little bit, either.
