Nevadans?

wow! Bunch of chatty kathy's on here. I was unplugged last night and look what I missed. I admit I didn't read every word of every post but i skimmed
tongue.png

yeah the farmers best at greens is about 14-15 bucks and the layena is 18. Its right up there on the "menu" board!
I missed that. Didn't know I had other options besides purina! I am all about saving $$
oh seth! congrats man! cant wait to see pics!!!

Had my first ever "bloodbath" last night. Ive managed so far to never have anyone hurt anyone else and my flock has remained ultra peacefull, so you can imagine my shock last night when i went to close up the coop and Birthday Present's head was all bloody :(
Now I know what youre thinking and YOURE WRONG! they werent picking on her....hahaha, actually what happened was Birthday Present decided that she wanted to sleep all cuddled up with MY ONLY BROODY HEN! yeesh! tough break Kid! Anywhoo, lil frizz, the broody hissed and hollered and finally grabbed a chunk of her "hair" and ripped it out. I know this because she still had white feathers stuck to her beak. so we had to clean her up and put her hair in a little ponytail to cover up the wound. Poor chicken. Other than that little hiccup the transition has gone well and everyone seems happy :)
poor thing! hope she learned her lesson!
Elizabeth I am mad at Green's Feed now! I called today and they do sell a Layer feed that is cheaper than One Stop but never told me they carried that brand and now I call One Stop and they are going up on their prices so the 22% Game Bird is now $18! Green's Feed has layer for $13.90 vs One Stop's $15.00.

Game bird and All Flock used to be much cheaper! I will be making calls this week all over town to find out who is the cheapest these days cause this is getting out of hand. I know corn prices are up but Jeez Louise! I'll let you all know who has the cheapest prices once I get it done.
thanks for doing the research. I need to find the most economical options too! prices have gone up quite a bit since I got my first chicks back in september.
I would like to put a little meat on me. I weigh. 119.0 when I'm in my boots with my knofe and wallet and keys I'm around 5'10. I would like to get some abs, I want a little more muscle tone in my arms and I wouldn't mind some more leg muscle and a former hind quarters.
Do McDonalds Frappes count as Starbucks? I don't normally like hot drinks or teas I might be able to go over to Starbucks and get a green tea there and try and drink it.
Thanks for the help.
You got a lot of good advice on here. My husband is also 5'10 and weighed about 120 when we got married so he has a similar build and metabolism to you, I think. He's now about 160 and has gotten very fit with Crossfit which is weightlifting and cardio combined. He really needs to work at it to gain muscle and has to eat quite a lot to maintain his weight. (wish I had that problem!) He had gotten down to 140 with doing tons of Crossfit and really felt too thin so he dialed it down a bit and started eating more. He has a protein shake everyday with banana and peanut butter in it. He has trouble with dairy so uses almond milk but if you can tolerate dairy, drinking milk along with weight training can help you gain muscle. and like the others were saying, eat good whole foods, meat and eggs and other high protein foods will be good for gaining muscle. Weight training will be great for you. Just start off light and build up.

hi everybody!
i'm new to chicken keeping and reno and enjoying both. still working on my coop, i'm a little construction challenged, but it's coming along. the girls; amelia, peanut butter and jelly, are anxiously awaiting their new digs and are pretty bored with the amenities of the bathtub hotel.

welcome!

give us the details on your chicks. as aubrey said, you will likely not stop at 3 so hopefully you're building your coop big enough for more!
Don't forget me!

Guess what Sunny I just got one of those memory foam mattresses from Costco and it is already doing wonders for my back. Of course my problems are muscle related, not discs. Have you heard about this laser spine institute? It's supposed to be the miracle cure for disc problems.

we got a bed that is like a sleep number but a different brand and have loved it. really makes a difference from a regular mattress. glad you found something that helps your back.

All I've gotten done was take Makayla to school, sit here and make trips to the Sportsman. I have pips, zips and chicks goin on.
Awesome! It sounds like you are having a great hatch this time around!!!

I have a much more hands off attitude about weight loss. I also have a family that is heavy and I am the thinnest of all my siblings but I try never to judge since part of it is easier for me because I do have a higher metabolism than they do. I know a lot of it is their choice and we do worry about the ones we love but if they enjoy food that much who am I to judge them for that.

In ancient times, folks with super high metabolisms would have dies off during the first famine. Evolutionarily speaking folks with a slower metabolism are more successful than those with too high a metabolism. And as far as them getting defensive I think when we all talk about our weight loses and how much better we feel etc it just naturally puts people on the defensive. They are constantly being told how horrible they are (from advertisers mostly but media in general plays a huge part) just cause they are not thin.

I actually would not worry about my weight at all, since I love food so much (yes I believe in enjoying life and a life without any sweets is one I'd rather pass on thank you very much lol), if it weren't so painful to carry the extra weight on this back of mine. My back is the only reason I try to stay "out of the plus sizes" as Missy put it.

Heck, now that my kids are grown I'm even OK with the idea that I might pass at any time. Be it car accident or heart attack there are no long life guarantees and I have thoroughly enjoyed my life no matter what. Yes I took chances and still do (I still drive all the time and that is super dangerous to our health) but I'm not gonna quit having fun and enjoying life.

The only time I feel bad for my family is when I see them using food for comfort but instead it seems to make them sadder. It can be something that folks turn to out of habit without even enjoying! That is really not good but I don't have that problem so I still can't judge what drives it. I eat only what sounds really good to me and I really enjoy what I eat. Even the veggies and stuff have to be prepared the way I like them and I would never eat a piece of fruit I didn't like. There are too many delicious choices to settle.

On another subject. I called all the feed stores for prices on their cheapest feeds and here goes...

Green's wins on layer feed at $13.90. This is the Farmers.

1 Stop wins on All Flock and Game Bird at 18.50. This is Bar Ale brand and is 22%.

thanks for the feed info!

weight has been an issue for me since my first year of marriage and grad school way back in 1996/1997. I wish I had nipped it in the bud with the first 10 pounds I gained but grad school was very intense and I didn't take the time for self care that I should have. No one in my family is overweight--not even extended family so I really feel like the oddball. I was thin growing up--just wide hip bones. I found out later when trying to get pregnant that I have PCOS. it's a metabolic/hormone disorder that involves insulin resistance (among a variety of other issues) in most people who have it. That makes it easier to gain weight and harder to lose it. Doesn't make it impossible but makes it harder. So I really have to focus in to try to lose weight. Exercise for me has helped my body composition--more muscle, less fat but it doesn't really help me lose weight by itself. I have to be vigilent about eating good food in smaller portions to see a change in the scale. Over the past couple of years I've lost 20 pounds but when I started Crossfit in the fall I lost 2 sizes but 0 pounds. So that really impacted fat loss/size but not the scale. I'll take it though...

Now, I want to see the scale go down again so I can't coast along. I am great at maintaining weight so that's good! I'm thinking that probably another 40-50 pounds lost would be good. that weight would be higher than I was when I got married but I was not as muscular then as I am now. Time to focus in. I have done weightwatchers in the past--both in person and online and got some moderate results but I lose super slow. I did find the in person meetings to end up being frustrating for me. I compare myself to others too much and others would lose much faster and then I would get depressed and want to go out and eat some cake or something! My plan this time is to track food intake in sparkpeople online. it's free and has a pretty good tracking system. anyway, kudos to those of you who have had success losing weight. it sure is tough.

Quote: I completely missed this post earlier! You know we could never forget you Ron! You are one of our favorites here on the Nevada thread!

I have been wanting one of those memory foam mattresses for sooo long now! We settled for the sleep number bed cause it was cheaper (at least when it first came out it was pretty reasonable) but I have not been happy with it. I sleep better on a blow up bed than on this thing. The air mattress is just not thick enough for me. No offense to people that like their's but I hate mine.

I keep hearing about them being so warm to sleep on. Have you felt too warm while sleeping on yours? We were looking at the icomfort bed (from Sears I think). It is supposed to breathe better but still has the memory foam layer. IDK our bed is 12 years old and we need a new bed but they are freakin' expensive!

You are very welcome Elizabeth. I checked 5 stores. Green's, One Stop, North Valley Feeds, H&J Feed (actually they haven't returned my call but they specialize in horses and cattle), and Feed World. North Valley Feeds was the most expensive by far. Feed World doesn't even carry Flock Raiser or All Flock but was pretty close to Greens and One Stop on Layer and Game Bird.

Wow, there are so many points here that I want to comment on. But I didn't even attempt to press the quote button.

I just assumed it wouldn't work.

There are so many emotions thrown around when it comes to weight, eating healthy, and choosing a certain style of eating. So many people that want to throw around advice. Last year, when Russ and I lost 30lbs each, we just plain learned not to talk about our diets. Since it was heart-attack related, we had people yelling at us to stop eating red meat. When we said that we only eat meat 1 or two times a week, the same people would yell at us that we can't just stop eating meat. We didn't follow a "diet," but just exercised whenever we could, and made a rule that, if something was ready to be harvested out of the garden, we had to eat it. No letting garden produce sit on the counter and going out for burgers. But people noticed our weight loss and demanded to know how we did it. We told them, and they yelled at us for not eating enough calories. Which was unsubstantiated, because I logged every single meal to be sure, and they came to the perfect number of calories, without trying, as long as we just ate produce whenever we could.

It just plain comes down to choice. I can choose to sit on BYC or I can take a walk. I can choose to complain about stress, or I can do yoga. I can choose to blame it on my thyroid, or I can actually get my thyroid tested and get on medication if necessary. I can choose to drive past the McDonald's, and to give up cable TV, then put the extra money toward heathier food. It's soooo human to make excuses. We have a friend who is a HUGE excuse maker, and listening to him has really made me more aware of excuses I make. He complains that he can't get a girlfriend, when he never showers, doesn't exercise, and won't leave his house. Duh. So I can complain about my weight, or I can choose not to eat the burger that I just wolfed down while reading everyone's posts. Doing all this garden work isn't going to do a thing for my physique if I keep eating burgers.

I would like to walk around the mall. I'm not going to make any plans to, because we have a lot going on right now. One vehicle, crazy schedules, responsibilities at home, and whatever this fatigue crud is. So I'm just not going to make promises then break them. But if people are going, let me know and I'll see if I can meet up there.

Yes some people get extremely vocal about it and some people are just plain rude! It's nice to read all the comments on here and realize what a sane group of folks we have. I will not ever promise to never eat another burger (but not Mickey Ds. I can't eat their burgers either), I like them too much, and I do love to p!ss & moan so I probably won't stop that either, lol, but I do enjoy these conversations. I'm afraid I'm one of those people that likes a lively debate at times. I get bored if I hang around folks that agree with me all the time. :)

I had a sleep number bed before - and I hated it! Their ad says it works for 93% of people's back pain - I guess I'm in the 7% 'cause it didn't help at all. And, it was very expensive! This foam bed I got from Costco for $500! I haven't noticed it being too warm, but it is supposed to "breathe". It is 12 inches thick and has 3 layers. The brand is NovaForm and it's even made in USA. It was $100.00 cheaper than shown on the link in-store.

thank you!
sw reno, by chrissy collin park. actually there are 3 girls, amelia, peanut butter, and jelly. yes, you're probably right about the others yet to come!

I was so self-absorbed in the weight loss advice topic that I forgot to welcome you! South Reno is my old 'hood, for about 10 years. I'm in the old Southwest now.
