Nevadans?

Hey!
frow.gif
Welcome! what part of reno are you in? I see you only have two chicks. THIS WILL CHANGE. oh yes...it WILL change. muahaha!

oh seth! congrats man! cant wait to see pics!!!

Had my first ever "bloodbath" last night. Ive managed so far to never have anyone hurt anyone else and my flock has remained ultra peacefull, so you can imagine my shock last night when i went to close up the coop and Birthday Present's head was all bloody :(
Now I know what youre thinking and YOURE WRONG! they werent picking on her....hahaha, actually what happened was Birthday Present decided that she wanted to sleep all cuddled up with MY ONLY BROODY HEN! yeesh! tough break Kid! Anywhoo, lil frizz, the broody hissed and hollered and finally grabbed a chunk of her "hair" and ripped it out. I know this because she still had white feathers stuck to her beak. so we had to clean her up and put her hair in a little ponytail to cover up the wound. Poor chicken. Other than that little hiccup the transition has gone well and everyone seems happy :)
Awwww! Well that's how they learn. Poor girl!
Sunny you must be trying to quote too many posts at once!

What brand was the $13.90 layer?
I forgot to ask. I assumed it was the Farmer's Best but Aubrey just stated that it is a little higher so I'll call and ask.
Quote: Green tea powder is what I'm hearing about a lot lately. Just ground up green tea leaves and you can add them to tons of stuff. I agree with the others. Eat less processed food and slow, resistance exercises are great and you don't need a ton of equipment to do them.

And for anyone that thinks my muscles aren't still strong I dare ya to take a gut shot from me. hahaha I still have super strong muscles even though the discs are shot. Nice being an old lady and still having a mean right cross!
lol.png

I still do resistance exercises in bed if that is all I can manage. Important to keep some strength when you have to be down so much!

Oh almost forgot! There is this Guy that writes for Men's Health magazine that writes the "Eat This not That" column and he gives some great alternative choices for eating healthier when you go out. Not saying that eating out is healthy but when you do eat out these options are better choices than the normal fare.

He says stay away from anything in a wrap though!!! I did not like that! Jeez that is the one thing I loved about Weight Watchers. I can eat what I want but it will be tiny portions of some stuff or I just have to eat fruit and veggies the rest of the day if I want something decadent.
big_smile.png
So just use common sense and you'll be fine!

tyler! you could walk to the grocery store across the street and get real food, LOL. Scholaris has lots of good pre-cooked foods in the deli section! If youre going to be working out and want to bulk up fast food will not be the way to go, it will make you feel slow and sluggish. Eat fresh foods! like kim said, grilled meats rather than fried. You want the workout to show muscle mass so dont waste it by having to work off fat, eat nuts and meat for protein and turn that into rock hard abs! I will say after doing weight watchers, no matter how healthy something "seems" at fast food places...its really not. Even the salads usually have more crap in them then a home cooked meal of chicken and veggies. Plus if thats what youve been eating every day anyways then youre not going to see results from just doing what youve been doing. When i was in high school i worked next to a micky-ds and ate the five piece chicken strips with extra ranch and a hot fudge sundae every single day. Since i was really young i never effected my weight but it did effect how i felt at work and school. I didnt realize this until my mother started letting me cook real meals and take them to work with me.
Also remember, every body type is different... youll have to feel it out and see what wprks best for you. For instance, i used to work out everyday at the gym for AT LEAST an hour a day, and never lost a pound, however my body reacts really well to eating better. I know tons of people who are the other way around.
good luck though! try protein shakes! when my brother was in his late teens he worked out a lot and drank those and they really helped bulk him up. Too bad you dont live in reno...markie could take you to the gym with him and show you his workout. Hes been swimming and lifting weights everyday on top of surfing and his shoulders make me drool! LOL!!!
Hahaha!!!
lol.png

honestly though i am no expert on weight GAIN....(well unless, you count after i quit drinking..yeesh!) but no matter what the goal is there is always a healthy way to do it! And guess what...every person you ask will have something to say on the subject and every person will say something differet, BUAHAHA! when i started weight watchers EVERY SINGLE PERSON I told would give me their own advice which would be completely upsidedown and backwards to what my diet plan and instruction really was, LOL, and i would have to tell them "thank you, but i think ive got this" BHAHAHA!
Weight watchers is what I used and I lost weight and felt great. I will probably go back on it once I'm done with the move. It has been consistently rated one of the healthiest choices and has the best success rate for long term success. It's a great program. What I love about it is the fact that they let you earn extra points for exercise. Working out alone works very well for me when my back is ok. But, as you all already know, that is not an option right now.
hi everybody!
i'm new to chicken keeping and reno and enjoying both. still working on my coop, i'm a little construction challenged, but it's coming along. the girls; amelia, peanut butter and jelly, are anxiously awaiting their new digs and are pretty bored with the amenities of the bathtub hotel.

Welcome to the Nevada thread!!!
frow.gif

Love those names! haha I'll add you to the opening post now.

Welcome to the crazy house I mean group. Everyone on here is great and super nice. My name is Tyler. I'm out here in Fernley and breed and show rabbits. If you get rabbits or ever have a rabbit question just as me or my young Side kick Seth. I also show poultry. I am getting ready yo get a trio of Dutch bantams. If youhave a poultry show question I might be able to answer it and if I can't Julie will be able to. Just thought I'd interduce myself.
What breeds are your birds? When do you plan to add onto your flock? If you don't want more, hahaha who am I kidding you'll have 15 in no time. Having 15 birds is not really to much more work by the way ;)

Tyler, everyone is right. Know why? Cause every BODY IS different. I used to watch women at the gym work out with a lot of men. Men tried to tell me how to lift and how to eat. If I had wanted to look like those other women I had the right people telling me, but I didn't want huge muscle, just to be firm all over. And trust me I was. If Bill was alive, he'd be standing over my shoulder ready and saying "I know, I made you fat." Well he did! I used to walk all over and when I met him he wouldn't have me walking. I had someone who would drive me. I didn't want to ride I wanted to walk, but with his knees and hip he couldn't keep up and I stopped so he didn't feel bad. TRUE! He loved fast foods and I didn't, but we'd be out and I ate the crap with him after a while. That was my fault and I really have to be in the mood for fast food. He ate a ton of ice cream. I'm not a big fan unless it;s homemade or a hot fudge sundae, so he'd surprise me with a sundae (gee thanks Honey!) and I'd eat it. DUH! I own at least 5 ice cream makers. Only made it once since he died.

You do need someone to train with. If you have someone with the same goals it makes it easier for some people. I was never one of those people, but I know many are. I started weight training at 16 when I was at the boxing gym with my 2 oldest daughters' dad. He boxed Golden Gloves. That was where I first saw a woman use weights. Remember I'm old. She would workout with her husband and I would watch every time I was there. She looked just amazing and one day when we were talking she offered to show me what to do. You wouldn't know it now, but I was a workout junky for almost 30 years. Then I had a series of strokes and they found my brain tumor and I had to leave wrestling and couldn't lift any more. These days I don't eat much, sometimes for days, but I can gain weight in a heartbeat. And I do have to lift things they told me not to, but I had a baby when I was 39, so you lift a lot. I went back to working out and was in the gym at school for 3 and 4 hours a day. Then I met Bill, who was amazed I had a 1 yr old and looked like I did. So he changed it. LOL On a better note though, with all my depression I go through, I knew that working out was something that always made me feel better. I was always positive and I've had nothing positive going on for over 2 years, so the begining of the month I started working out a little at a time. Wasn't getting anywhere though. The Pow Wow, kicked my behind! My neighborhood is no place you want to take walks and I don't shop in malls, which is actually a good workout. LOL I walked so much at Pow Wow I was dying the first night. I ached everywhere. The next morning I was still hurting, so I pushed to walk more. I lost a couple of pounds and I've lost 10 more this week, just doing little things I used to do. Kind of hard in this tiny house when you have a 6 year old trying to copy what you do, but we did workout. One of my grand daughter's asked last night if I lost weight. Pretty good coming from an 18 year old, so I feel better. I also hit one of my favorite health food stores in the Bay Area and bought my own ACV, which I used to take daily for most of my life and lately I don't touch it cause I use it for the animals and I didn't want to run out. . Now I have my own.

I'm going to give you that chart, but yeah, body types vary and like I said, without seeing you or knowing how you eat or whatever I can just give you a lifting schedule and have you walk or run. You have to figure out what works for you out of what I suggest. A good idea though is to start writing a journal of what you do and what you eat every day. A week of doing that and i can help me figure you out, but you'll also see for yourself the changes you can make just by going back and looking at what type excersize you do and what your diet is like. You lift hay and saddles, just incorperate correct form of lifting weights to move those things around. You have a lot of people on here that can all give you ideas, but you'll have to try things and see what's working for you and write down what does and doesn't work.

WOW took me forever to type that out!

Welcome to the thread! I'm a lurker from California. I love the names. Four of out bantams are Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and Snack, Snack os gonna be just that if he doesn't stop flogging my toes. Little pain in the neck. He doesn't think about the fact I can pick him up and hold him in one hand.

Thanks so much for all your help. There is'nt a huge rush to get it started do take your time. I actullay prefer to work out alone. My biggest challenge will be the eating healthier. All though I passed on cold left over pizza for breakfest and has a bananna instead. Aubrey is right I can go to the grocery store across the parking lot for food plus the walking will be good for me.

I can vouch for that! I spent my adolescence and half of my 20s believing that I was fat, because, according to the BMI scale, I have been AT LEAST 20 LBS OVERWEIGHT for my entire life! Right now, I'm currently 50-60lbs overweight.
tongue.png
But for MY body, I'm only 20lbs over. That's because, the moment I start exercising, I pack on muscle to rival Xena the Warrior Princess. My husband is the perfect training partner, because he works out in a way that also works well for my body. But if I was built like most women, had a frame like them or muscle like them... that would completely change it all. Finally, when I got near my 30s, I realized that competent was beautiful in my eyes, and my two criteria are being able to do what I want to do, and being able to shop in the non-plus-size section. Which, with my frame, is still pretty high in the section... but at least I'm there.

My husband, who is a huge chunk of muscle, can't build biceps to save his life. He has this MASSIVE chest and shoulders.
droolin.gif
But his humerus bone is too long in comparison to the brachial muscles to build a nice, sculpted bicep. That's ok. Biceps don't make good pillows, anyway.

10 lbs! Great news Kim! I despise shopping but I do love to go to the mall to walk the circuit, for exercise only. Tried to go with friends cause it is a lot more fun with a partner but they kept wanting to stop and look at stuff. I don't like to stop during because it interrupts my stride. I don't mind if they want to stop at the end. Just not during a workout. Plus I can't stand in one place very long at all cause my back freezes up so it just didn't work out very well.

Anybody want to walk with me? I'm slow but once I loosen up it's not too bad. Haven't been in awhile so I need to start out with baby steps again. Legs can go forever just this darn back that won't cooperate.

I am sure you all are so sick of hearing about it. Sorry.

Good choice, but remember I push oatmeal. It;s one of the best foods you can eat any time of the day. I love bananas, but since I'm trying to lose I've been eating grapefruit, which luckily I love. Now if the strawberries don't die on me this year so I actually get fruit, I'll be eating those too. I like that you'll go to the store and not eat all the fast foods.

.....but STILL would try to offer me advice on my eating! I am in better shape than i have ever been- i feel amazing, look amazing, and she is calling me on the phone telling me that i need to stop eating carrots as a snack because celery is lower calories. OMG MOM! HAHAHA. i love her.

yuckyuck.gif

Celery may be higher in fiber and less calories, but carrots are far more nutritious!

One thing my mom drilled into our heads as kids (besides "Moisturize, moisturize, MOISTURIZE!"...and picture that delivered in a "Mommy Dearest" type tone) was that the less handling your food had (e.g., processing), the better. We didn't have potato chips or soda pop in our house and, indeed, my first slice of pizza was somewhere around as a 12 y.o. And taste-wise real home-cookin' (most sauces and ingredients from scratch) is just uncomparably good to stuff out of a box, although my mom wasn't a cook and so that duty fell to me at a tender age. I think the lack of refined sugar and junk food probably accounts for my low blood pressure and cholesterol levels and general good health despite my chunky frame.

Right now in my house we joke about the F-word: Fiber. My husband is convinced I'm trying to stuff him to death. (This is the man who wanted the "I *heart* gravy" license plate.) Every day I get the fiber inquisition, "What is in this?" Oh, well.... His blood pressure has dropped and his cholesterol is down 100+ points. He cannot complain too readily because he eats well. I'm doing cartwheels because he's now a regular eater of salad and fruit. And he's catching on... The other day we went out for burgers & fries for lunch and he commented on how he needed to eat salad and veggies for a couple of days to do penance. Instead of Gatorade after a workout he drinks cucumber juice. (btw, cuke juice is WAY higher in electrolytes than Gatorade)

Gotta agree on avoiding the wraps and white flour tortillas...tons of fat in them. And we use corn tortillas sparingly..... After all, what do they use to fatten up cattle on the feedlots? Corn. I try to use blue corn whenever I can...it just seems more toothful.

I've tried Weight Watchers on and off with varying degrees of success. Last time, though, was hard as the speakers kept pushing my emotional buttons (so, yeah, I have issues and I know it.). Hard to stay motivated when the meetings make you cry. My worst time of day eating-wise is between 3:00/4:00 p.m. For some reason the override goes on and it's Grazing City.

The other problem I had with Weight Watchers is they keep switching up their point system....often times right in the middle of the program. I found it very frustrating to be told carrots were okay and then carrots were not. C'mon....dieting is hard enough as is without the gyrations. We're creatures of habit and if we break one in a good way, don't punish us for it with a "No. It doesn't count anymore." Sheesh.....

Keep us posted on how your mom does with her banding. The reality is that if one had followed the diet restrictions caused by surgery BEFORE surgery, one wouldn't need the surgery. I know banding is a bit different than gastric bypass (i.e. it just restricts the amount of food, not the type...with GB you must refrain from sugary stuff or it'll come right back up and you have a propensity to substitute one bad habit -- overeating -- for another -- alcohol -- as the GB accounts for a buzz real quick and suddenly you've got a new hobby other than eating), but psychologically they're pretty similar. I've gone back and forth on the pro's and cons as a weight solution, but I find I cannot give up my love of good food. Dang! It -- eating daily -- is the one addiction that you cannot quit cold turkey on. (As my mentor succinctly said when I commented on weight loss or lack thereof, "Figure out what's eating you and you can figure out your eating.")

And.... Mothers will always give advice, no matter how inappropriate or misguided. It's in the handbook. Pick and choose your battles... Carrots v. celery is not one of them.
