Nevadans?

Hi everyone! Welcome Victoria. I'm happy to meet you.

That was good Tyler. You should start eating spinach.

Yeah Sunny, please don't forget me either. How can telling us how you really feel be complaining? You hurt and it's alright talking about it. It makes me feel like I would get some relief by talking about it if it was me? My FIL's back was crooked but it also spiraled around as well. He was 6'1" at 21 years old and when he passed away I was taller than him. He found out later in his life he had polio as a child. No one knew. His best friend had polio and died from it. No one in the family thought he got it. He did get sick but was told it was pneumonia. Not once would he complain or talk about it. He went to a back specialist and the specialist said, I can't se how you do it. Let me go in there and fix it just a bit. Boy did he blow up and said - you will not be touching my back. Well 2 years later he finally let him do it. My FIL was so much better getting some of the pressure off his spine. My FIL finally spoke out on how hard it was all those years with no relief in sight until now.

Oh and I have a new member in my flock. Yesterday little Bridgette joined us. She's 6 weeks old and is the most beautiful little French girl I've ever seen. I see some of Amanda's ways in her. She's going to be very dainty. She's with the last 2 ducks that hatched 3 weeks ago. Bridgette would only step out of the new area like 6" from the box. She finally ventured out at 9am this morning. It was sooooo cute. Every time she went back in the ducks would go inside with her and lay down for a bit and then call her out. They're doing great and are very happy. Thank you Sunny for this little one.
Thank you so much for letting me gripe, all of you!!! You are such special people! I feel very blessed to know you all!

Now I hope you will forgive me for correcting the spelling on Victoria's name. I couldn't seem to help myself.

So happy to hear that Bridgette is doing well! And you are very welcome!

Does spinach artichoke dip count?
I find eating spinach cruel and inhumane.
You don't have to eat spinach if you hate it. As long as you find some dark green leafy veggies that you like (broccoli or brussel sprouts?) but if you can eat spinach in dip you will probably like it mixed in other foods as well. It is fantastic mixed into spaghetti sauce or fresh mixed with other greens in a nice salad (add bacon bits, grated manchego cheese and prawns... yuuuuu-um!). Tomato sauces really kill the bitterness that bother some folks.
Well the storm last night decimated my flock of meaties. I lost 14 out of my 20!

They were all laying around out in the open. I guess they were too dumb to at least go under the coop and huddle.

Now I'm wondering if the remaining 6 will make it through the day.

OH NO!!! That stinks Ron! I'm so sorry!

I'm sorry Ron. I guess they're like some of the turkeys out there. If it rains they look up and drown. I hope the rest makes it.

Um, Tyler, I don't think so. I know you think spinach is cruel and inhumane but the spinach doesn't think so. The spinach actually says eat me, eat me. I promise to help you build up your body if you eat me.

Missy, shes a french black copper marans. It was the only girl left from Sunny's hatching.
The only girl left from that hatch anyway. This was my first hatch of my own girl's eggs in my new bator. I popped three little pullet eggs in for kicks (never dreaming they would hatch) and all 3 eggs hatched! All have gorgeous coloring and all 3 were girls!!!
Tyler I was thinking about you last night when I watched a documentary called Buck. Have you seen it? I'd recommend it for even people who aren't into horses. This guy Buck was the guy the movie The Horse Whisperer was based on, I think it was but anyway he was on set and his own horse was in the movie. Also, a really sad part of the film was filmed in Chico, just next to Paradise and featured the local shoer. Won awards at Sundance film festival. www.buckthefilm.com
Sounds like a great film! Thanks for the link.

I havent watched it yet.
I might like spinach if I can fry it or cook it with bacon. I don't mind broccoli as long as it has ranch.

Everyone forgot to mention spinach in EGGS! It's a great addition to scrambled eggs or an omelet (this is a chicken forum, right?

Re: the weight/dieting discussion. I try to eat as much unprocessed (or less processed) food as possible. Still, I've never been able to control my weight solely by diet. If I don't exercise, I gain. Unfortunately, I'm no longer able to eat many of my favorite "healthy" foods. I had a DVT followed by Pulmonary Embolisms after my shoulder surgery a couple of years ago and I was put on Warfarin - it's a blood thinner that is commonly used in rat poison. Anyway, three of my favorite vegetables - spinach, broccoli, and asparagus are now off limits because they contain very high amounts of vitamin K, which has the effect of making it easier for blood to clot. In fact it's called vitamin K because K is the first letter of the German word for clot and it was discovered by a German scientist. Most dark green leafy vegetables are very high in K so no more of them for me! As a consequence, I have gained 60 lbs.

since then. I recently began looking for some type of healthy diet (that I can actually enjoy) that fits with my current restrictions. So far it has not been easy...

ETA: Frying spinach is a great way to eat it. Although I've never tried it with bacon, I've heard that is really good. I used to stir fry it with onions and a little salt - it doesn't take much oil (about a teaspoon or so) and it comes out with the most wonderful velvety texture on your tongue.

My husband just can't have grapefruit, and it's one of his favorite foods. I'm so glad he can have spinach and cranberries. There's a whole lot less I can cook with grapefruit. That's his answer to a healthy diet... let me pack all his lunches and dinners, and let me spend all his money before he can go out to fast food!

As long as I'm thinking about his health, or my son's autism, I automatically cook the good stuff. And then that's what I eat. So it works all around.

Tyler, soups are another great way to get tons of vegetables. A good vegetable or Italian Wedding soup will hide the spinach taste, and though the vitamins cook out into the broth, you still get them as long as you eat the broth. Soups are a family standby for using the rest of our frozen vegetables, or when we have a few ugly lumps of vegetables that we're embarassed to pack into school lunches. (We had some really short, squat carrots last year. I think I planted them in the wrong bed, which was a little sandier than I wanted.)

Yeah I'm not allowed to have grapefruit or cranberries, either. But for the opposite reason of spinach: they make your blood thinner! I can live without cranberries but I really miss grapefruit.

Yeah! I highly recommend this film. And if you get the DVD, make sure to watch all the bonus feature extras. Horses are just such natural emphatic healers that it's heartening that someone who got the gift from them is able to give it back....to both horses and people.

My husband is NOT a horse person having not grown up with critters, but thoroughly enjoyed the film. (Did I mention he's a counselor/therapist?) He's wiling to try having horses when we move, but only on the condition he gets some riding lessons so we can go riding together.

(And I will gladly farm that out to someone else having suffered from having an ex-spouse try to teach me to drive their manual transmission car.... There's not enough patience in the world to try anything like that again.) DH genuinely loves our dogs, though, so I'm sure horses are not a stretch. His main concern, though, is with riding getting his huevos squished. Sigh......

Ron:
Bummer daaz on the meaties.... I hope it was early in the process so you didn't sink a fortune into feeding them yet. Having once lost 105 lbs. of meat birds to an unexpected heatwave, I can feel your pain. Short of having to contend with a flock of featherless birds, I think meaties can be pretty tricky to raise a batch without consequences. They either defib/stroke out, pop a tendon or cannot get out of their own way. When it came to process them, there was absolutely no remorse. Oh, and did anyone mention the copious amounts of stinky poo? What's up with that?

- - -
One of my favorite spinach dishes (besides quiche) is a simple sauteed spinach, done in butter (it doesn't take much to wilt and fry) a little garlic and, after, a shot of teriyaki or stirfry sauce. Topped with a poached egg. Yummmmm......

Okay I have a confession. Regarding consumption of processed foods we're guilty of copious amounts of BACON. *Somebody* (DH) would incorporate it into every meal, if he could. If I'm serving him a new dish that I question he'll enjoy, I pop a little bacon in there. I'm pretty sure if I could come up with a Cologne du Hormel I would be the most irresistable gal on earth.

p.s.

Tonight we're having manicotti stuffed with homemade ricotta, spinach and portobello mushrooms in a mushroom cream sauce. That with some salad and some melon.... Yum City!

Well you can afford ranch! I love it too but can't have much of it or I'd be having to shop for new jeans again and you all know how much I hate to shop. Pants especially are the worst!!! Why can't designers keep the same style of jeans around for women like they do for men? I can order 501s on-line for my hubby any time, any year but as soon as I finally find a brand I like... POOF! They're gone! Never to be seen again.

I only wear cowboy cut Wranglers. 30 waist (all though I could away with 29) x 36.
I love how after I decide to start eating healthy I get sick. That's one of the big reasons I do wanted to eat healthy.
