Nevadans?

Hi all. Newbie here from Carson City. I hate to interrupt your on-going discussion but I'll be in the market for good egg-laying hens soon. I can only keep 4 because of the CC ordinances. Does anyone know of a good place to buy chicks or hens in this area?

If you want chicks, I keep seeing ads on Craigslist for a feed store in Lemmon Valley. It's in the farm/garden section. Do NOT buy them at Sierra Feed on S. Virginia.
I can't share my chickens because of a past health issue we dealt with, but maybe someone else on here has a few extras. If not, they're all over Craigslist as well... and some are even new pullets, not old hens.

And BTW... this on-going discussion is meant to be interrupted. Please do it often.

Happy Birthday Peeps!
Bad news. Just found one of my lavender pullets dead.

The ramp had fallen down on top of her. Totally my fault. the ramp was still temporary and I hadn't fastened it to the porch. Lesson learned. I feel so bad.

& to the funny Nevada thread! The best person to get chicks from is Candy. She lives in California in the Gold Country. Her birds are the sweetest and nicest around. They lay brown and blue eggs. You can't go wrong with her. There are several of us here as well that might have some hens. I myself have ducks if you're interested. They are extremely quiet too.

Awww, that stinks! That's how I felt after my silkie chick fell and died. It comes with chicken ownership, right? That's what I keep telling myself, anyway.

Happy birthday, Dee!

I finished all of the planting yesterday. I still have to total it all up accurately, but I think it's...
33 tomato plants
13 eggplant
12 peppers
8 tomatillos
75 feet of carrots
60 feet of peas
100 feet of potatoes PLUS 32 bags of potatoes
120 feet of corn
10 zucchini
19 winter squash, plus 12 more seeded
5 cucumbers, plus 12 more just sprouting
50 feet of pole beans
at least 200 bush beans seeded and sprouting
maybe 50 radishes...
3 x 4' bed thick with basil, plus 8 established plants
2'x8' of lettuce
2'x16' of spinach
20 kale plants
about 20 chard plants
200 onions
(And everything we put in Garden #3, but we won't be harvesting any of that.)

We've been eating lettuce for the past month, spinach for the past 2 weeks, and just ate 1.5lbs of snow peas tonight! Beside fresh rabbit and mushroom gravy.

Oh wow, Missy. That is a lot of stuff you planted. The family better help you harvest that's for sure. John must help me harvest this year ow that we planted 100 beans again. He said he would last year but he kept making excuses but I told him he better harvest this year. LOL We shall see!

thanks for the condolences on the pullet. It helps to have other people around who understand.

hi sheryl, missed your post earlier. You are overrun with broodies! I was so glad when mine finally gave up after a few weeks. It throws everyone off their game. I suppose if I wanted to hatch eggs it would be good, though.

Missy, congrats on your gardens! you will be rolling in produce soon. I'm pleased with my garden progress this year.

welcome sierrareef,

just jump in the conversation any time. we're an easy going group. You will love having chickens. too bad CC limits it to 4. It is really hard to limit the number of chickens one has.

That's awful Elizabeth! Someday I will tell you the story of how I broke my back - it's very similar!

Hi sierrareef! No way you could be interrupting here. This isn't a discussion, it's more like the Seinfeld show - it's about nothing! S&W Feed in Carson City has chicks. They are just south of the Nevada State Railroad museum/Fairview Dr on the west side of Carson St.

Missy, will you and Russ adopt me?

There isn't a hilarious quote button! So like Seth said x2.

Elizabeth, I know you're heart broken right now and might even be blaming yourself but please don't. There are always reasons why these things happen. No matter what something else could have done it too. And thanks with the broody feelings. Sylvia almost took skin off today. It took almost an hour for her beak impression leave my hand today but there was no way she was going to sit on un fertilized eggs. I feel so sorry for broody's. To think they don't get up very often and Sierra is sitting in a hot coop to boot. I keep putting the sprinkler on the roof to help her out but boy does she run all over the place fast and a bit noisy but not enough for the neighbors to hear her and she looks so hot.

Sierra - I know people who live in Carson City and they have more than 8 chickens. As long as nobody turns you in that is. Luckily they have neighbors that love the free eggs so no one says a word to them.
