Nevadans?

You will have to let me know which pullet is laying the green egg
pop.gif
The lavenders will lay a green egg but the wheaten pullet should lay blue. All of my wheaten Ameraucanas lay blue eggs, so it would be highly unlikely for her to lay a green egg.

My buff orp is finally done being broody but now my black australorp, Elaine, is broody! She started being broody the day before the buff orp quit. of course, she chose the most popular nest box. this morning there were 4 hens crammed in there.

I have another ameraucana laying! I think it's the wheaten pullet. I saw her in the nest box checking things out the other day. it's a very light color--looks green to me. will have to post photos later. i haven't been on the computer much at home lately.

No takers on my silkie roo. i put a new craigs list ad up just now. he's getting on my nerves now!
so cute! glad she got her babies!
definitely not crazy to us on this thread! i have saved various chicken treat recipes but haven't gotten around to making nay yet. let us know how they like them.
very nice looking guys!
so cute! it will be fun to see how they change as they get older.
welcome! glad to have another member of the thread!

Greetings Nevadans!

New chicken keepers here from Reno, NV. Just found this regional thread and am so pleased to know there is an active chicken lovers group here in Nor. Nevada.

Hope you don't mind the re-post but this was from my earlier thread in the introductions forum:

Let me start by saying thank you to the BYC community for all your help so far. This forum has been an invaluable resource to us (my wife and myself). From tips to designing our coop, advice on dealing with 'pasty-butt, and much more, the BYC forum has provided great information and inspiration.

In May this year we took the plunge and brought home 8 beautiful chicks. We had considered chickens for several years and after reading many articles about the benefits of keeping chickens in publications like "Mother Earth News," "Hobby Farm Homes," etc. we couldn't resist anymore. My wife was initially the more enthusiastic on the venture but when I held the first chick in my hands I was hopelessly hooked.

Our Flock (so far):

Blue Silkie
Black Silkie
Blue-lace Red Wyandotte
Plymouth Barred Rock
White Cochin
Australorp
Buff Brahma
Buff Orpington (we got a Rooster, uh-oh)

Keeping chickens is much more satisfying than I expected. They are beautiful birds and their personalities are quite charming and unique. I find hanging out with them after a long day at work relaxing and soothing to frayed nerves. And while I eagerly await the first eggs I would be perfectly happy to keep them as pets if they never laid a one.

That's all for now and thanks again!

Welcome! we are a plethera of knowledge, let me tell you. Bahahaha. Anywhooo its nice to see locals as thrilled about their flocks as we are. Soon you will be talking about them by name, getting mad at them, medicating them, BATHING them...then most importantly you will wonder how your flock size went up by 600% or so.
The coop looks great, you done well!
What part of reno?

Hope you all don't mind if I share a little more info about us...

We got our chicks at Green's Feed in the North Valley's area in Reno. I can't say enough good things about the staff at Green's. So friendly and helpful to city folk like us that knew nothing about keeping chickens or livestock of any kind. When we brought them home we bought a brooder lamp, waterer and feeder. I built a large box for them and we kept them in a spare bedroom (which soon became the most popular room in the house).

A pic of our day old Silkies:

I knew I wanted a nice coop for our newest family members so I set about construction that weekend. I figured a time line of 3 weeks and a budget of $300-$400. We wanted our girls to be comfortable and have a little room left over if we ever decided to expand our flock. Well, as these things so often do, budgets skyrocketed and we encountered and the scope of work increased significantly.

Six weeks of evenings and weekends later we had our coop. A lot of work but we are very pleased with the end result.

Thanks,
Ed
welcome! beautiful coop and run! yes, as aubrey said, be prepared to increase your flock size! it's contagious and highly addictive!

well, it could be a lavender who laid it, since I didn't actually see who laid it. I just noticed the wheaten around the nest box the other day but the lavenders do look ready to lay, too so you might be right about that. or it could be blue but it's so light it's hard to tell. I will keep you posted. maybe a blue egg will show up next. what color will the black/lav splits from kirstie lay?

I have a friend who might want a roo. I will have to ask tomorrow. And the chickens enjoyed the treats, although the mixture smelled pretty gross!

I am so glad we have someone else who has chickens in Reno.

I am pretty sure Kirstie's lavender splits will lay blue. The rooster she is using is a lavender split (from a blue egg) x lavender pullets, but not sure if all of them were blue egg layers.

The weather cooled down by 5-10 degrees and suddenly I'm getting 7 eggs a day (up from 3-4.) I have 2 chickens that are visibly in molt, and I haven't seen them on the nest at all. Right now I have 9 layers, removing my mama hen and adding in Noodle. Soup and Fried Rice are squatting for me, and they're 20 weeks and 16 weeks, so I'm not so sure about Fried Rice. In September I expect to be flooded with a bounty of eggs, apples and grapes, Indian corn and squash, and the winding down of the tomatoes before the first frost. I already told Russ not to assign me to do anything during September and October. I won't be doing boysenberry jam this year... it's so hot they've been dehydrating right on the vine. The plums might give me just enough pulp for one batch of jelly and one of chutney. And then there's eggs... When I went to pick up Pot and Pie, their previous owner showed me how to dehydrate my extra eggs into a powder that lasts 25 years. It's dried at a high heat, then stored in a sterile container, and rehydrated for cooking, so it doesn't look like bacteria will be a problem.

NV thread! I'm in Dayton. If you need to get rid of that Buff Orpington roo, I might be interested!

Thank you all for the warm welcome. We live in the Hidden Valley area. We are fortunate to have 3/4 acre parcel which allows us a large yard and vegetable garden and now, of course, our chickens. We know of at least one other family who keeps chickens in this neighborhood.

NevadaRon you have touched on a sensitive subject for us. We are extremely fond of our Buff Orp Rooster and very attached. I realized early that 'honey' was not like the others. He was so outgoing - the first to jump into my hand, always the first to investigate everything and still the first to come running when he sees me. I have now taken to calling him 'Big Bird.' Very smart, gentle with people and a good keeper of the flock. We do allow our birds to range in the yard and he does a great job keeping watch..

Unfortunately it is our understanding that Washoe County ordinances do not permit us to keep a crowing rooster. We have no desire to piss-off the neighbors. I know that before I truly appreciated chickens as I do now I would not have been pleased to wake at dawn with a rooster crowning. We had, naively, held out hope that he might not crow, lol, but he has recently found his voice

So yes, we are looking to to find our Buff Orpington Rooster a good home.

Here's a couple pics of the handsome devil taken yesterday:

Thanks again for the welcome everyone!

From what I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) Reno city ordinance doesn't prohibit any certain type of animal, as long as they aren't neglected nor are they a nuisance to your neighbors. (A guy one block over from me has 2 full-sized goats.) Since I only know the neighbors adjacent to me, on MUCH less than 3/4 acre, to me "no nuisance" means no roosters. Nobody has complained yet, but I don't want to have Animal Control at my door for a complaint made 4 houses over. There are others on this thread who have roosters within the city limits and haven't encountered any problems.

If you aren't within Reno limits, but technically in the county, you're allowed all the roosters you want. I've heard the only chicken restriction for the county is that you have to have a special ventilation for a huge number of chickens. What was the number... 10,000?

yep, what missy said. Reno ordinances do not prohibit roosters. just the noise issue for any animal and since people aren't used to hearing roosters, they would probably notice it more than a barking dog. I would love to keep a rooster or two but until I'm out in the country, I'm not going to keep them. My hens make enough noise that I really don't want to push it with the neighbors.
