Nevadans?

Welcome to BYC Bcook0315! Glad to see you on here! I totally understand where you're coming from...this thread has a wonderful community of wonderful people. It is what it is... we try to compensate by using a local thread for trading chickens...though I'm not sure that children have been loaned out yet! I have gotten local hatching eggs from 4 different local BYC members through our Las Vegas thread. Come check us out when you can. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/666977/viva-las-vegas Also check out our LV Community page for local feed stores, member general locations and breeder lists. https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/viva-las-vegas-community-page Happily we can be a part of both communities...we're just hotter and drier...generally!

Hope you fared well during the downpour we got today! I live on the east side and it got really hit, though my place is high and dry, the school I work at may be swimming for PE tomorrow as the entire field/basketball courts/and playground is underwater!

So... aren't you guys supposed to be hotter and drier than us? From what I understand from my LV friends, you guys have gotten a LOT more rain than we have this year.

Welcome to the newbies! We love having you here and we love to talk (type without saying a word even though we say what he type in our heads)! See what you get to deal with here! Please keep coming back!

I went to the doctor today. I felt it was a waste of my time for the first time like ever! There was a doctor from the University of Reno there and all we did was go through my history and my siblings history. Spoke about lots of stuff. The worst part of it was when the doctor told me I must stay away from all dairy including EGGS! I looked at him like he was crazy talking like that. He said I have a very high rate for cancer and he must keep watching me for any signs. Okay so I'll only eat duck eggs since duck eggs are known to fight cancer because cancer can't live in an alkaline body and duck eggs are alkaline, chicken eggs are acidic food and acidic foods are linked to cancer. I can't stop eating eggs. My stomach doesn't really work as it is and eggs is what I mainly use for protein. Ugh! There was tons of more stuff, the appointment took over an hour but I won't really go into it all. I'm now writing down everything I eat until I go see him in November. For some unknown reason he thinks I eat a bit more than I can but I know for a fact he's wrong. John chimed in as well while shaking his head and told him, she only eats once a day and what she eats isn't much. Oh well. I know he's just making sure I'm not a piggy eater I guess. He's never been like this but he doesn't like that I'm not losing nor gaining weight, just maintaining.

Tonight the owl was in the neighbor's tree just about 30' feet away hoo'ing away. Leroy is sleeping in the doorway of the coop and the ducks are not saying a word right now. I don't blame them.

Goodnight Everyone!
What about Emu eggs???

HAH! Thanks! My classroom door looks out into the courtyard and the students were glued to it...they all suddenly had to go to the restroom so they could get a closer look! It was a great day to teach about the water cycle. To bad the focus was evaporation and not precipitation.

I had the television on and was building yet another hoop coop, but came in to sit for a few minutes. The flooding was all over the tv. How are things today? The said at least 1000 people had lost power. I need to get on FB and see how my cousins and their families are doing. Not sure they are even near the flood zone though. That was right down town right?

Sunny, I'm loving your ideas. If AT&T ever decides to send us out new modem I can start helping out with that. They said it would take One day and it's been over a week. Grrr! I can't watch x-files without Netflix!

Lacy thanks for the recipe!!!! I'll let you know how it goes :) yum yum yum

Missy thanks for the child labor! Mark wants to rent a post hole digging machine and it's a two person machine. I have no interest at all in using it but I bet your sOn would get a kick out of it! It will be great and I would rather employ your muscly boy than do anything myself BAHAHAHA!
Btw have I ever told you how much I admire your parenting style?!? Your kids are so disciplined and responsible and accountable and self reliant and I just adore them. You've done such a great job...

Whew, that's nice to hear. I often get accused of child abuse because of the amount of work I expect my kids to do. You know, pitching in and pulling their fair share and stuff. Maybe I'm just expecting too much of them for the area we live in. Parents here really don't expect their kids to do much. Seriously.

Sunny, I'd love to help with the boards. I do have to admit to being a bit of a board xenophobe, though. I was invited to join the N. Cal board almost a year ago, and I still haven't gone over. Hopefully the Vegas peeps won't abandon us for good, and will still consider themselves part of this board!

Sheryl, how frustrating! I consider both dairy and eggs to be important parts of our diet. Not too little, not too much, and use the right kind, like just about everything else. I wonder if the whole egg thing has even been studied on duck eggs before making that recommendation.

Kim, $15 for 1.75L is really good! Especially since I'll be making my batches in about 8oz or so. And Sunny, a tangerine extract made with a citron liqueur sounds amazing! Imagine the sorbet it could go into! I have to go buy a bunch of lemons soon for the plum chutney, so maybe I'll spring for a bottom shelf bottle, then I'll do lemon and vanilla extracts at the same time.

Try getting prices from places like Liqure Barn. I have no idea if they still have those LOL but they were everywhwre so I'm sure they do. You can also call a bar and ask what suppliers they use. Might even beat my $15, since that's the price at the store next to Pizza Guys, so they are paying less I'm sure and it's the same place that sells it for 9 bucks on sale.

I want to put the CA page link here for all of you to visit. Look at the information and if there's something you want to add please post on the CA thread and let me know.

Sunny, please know that if there is info on that page that you need, you can use it on your page.

I was so busy yesterday and no one helped me by collecting the eggs as I had asked them to do, so I was out there in the dark with a flashlight last night. The jaers had laid on the floor so it was good I went in there before the morning scramble. So, one silkie roosts by herself on the baby roost. The other three roost up on the big roost regularly now. The cochin is outside on the windowsill by herself. And one australorp still sleeps on the porch outside by herself I have a couple of loners in my flock, I guess.
I picked up 4 Blue and 2 Black Marans this morning from Jeff (Papa Brooder from the California-Northern thread)'s wife!

They came from beautiful dark eggs! Like I really needed to add 6 more chicks to the 17 I already have but I was thrilled to have the opportunity to add some chocolate eggs and eventually get some dark Olive eggs.
congrats on the new marans!
Hi,

My name is Ariel and I'm new to this thread. I live in Northern Nevada and would like to connect with others who live here.

The canning class went well. Elizabeth, it was so nice to see you there! Then we came home and I found that, during the 1.5 hours that the house had been unattended, one of the drakes had gotten in the doggy door. After eating his fill of dog food, he had proceeded to explore the house. He left his trail through everything but the bedrooms and the massage office. But when I took him outside, the other ducks heard him and came out of the coop to lead him inside.
thanks for inviting me! I learned a lot and am inspired to can some jams and jellies and salsas. Oh, what a mess with a duck in the house! Sneaky guy. I bet he was having fun exploring.
I love these posts, as a newbie it makes me wish I was up there with you all. But alas, I am stuck here in Sin City. Hope you all can accept one from below the " line."
We even welcome California people here so you will be fine!

Rain can be quite a exciting thing in the desert. I remember the first time my kids saw the windshield wipers go on. We had turned their car seats to face front when they got big enough. Some time later it finally rained and they were squealing with delight to see the wipers.

Sheryl, as long as you continue to eat just once a day, you'll never lose weight. I'm talking from experience. Your body is in starvation mode so everything you eat, no matter how good the food is, the calories are horded because your body knows it won't eat again for 24 hours so try to eat something every few hours and I'll bet you see some change. Sorry you didn't like your Doc, that's never good.
OK I know some of you scan or skip long posts like the one above in post #15225 but please take a couple of minutes to read my post about the new main page I want to create with links to all other pertinent NV info.

I CAN'T DO THIS WITHOUT HELP FROM ALL OF YOU OUT THERE! Hopefully we can be a better source of info for the state of NV. We know by now what we get the most requests for. Let's make it easier to find this info and we will also avoid answering some of the same questions over and over again (like where local feed stores are). We can just have one page with links to feed store lists (and other supplies) we like in different cities.

OK we have some really sharp folks out there! Let's hear the suggestions! I can't include every suggestion but that is not what brainstorming is about. Right now I want ideas and PLEASE don't negate anyone's ideas till we are done. This will prevent others from submitting their ideas. Let's just gather some suggestions for now. :)
Good idea Sunny. I don't have anything to add being from CA but if I hear anything that's close enough to relate to NV I'll help.

I agree Missy, you're a great parent and you take really good care of your family......I only wish you'd take better care of YOU!
Quote: YUMMM, love, love vodka! Haven't been able to drink it for a long time due to the pain meds but my mouth waters with all this vodka talk!

You can get a big Gilbeys for under $7 I think. I don't usually buy the really cheap stuff, it's pretty nasty. If it needs to have some quality Smirnoff is $14.99 at Costco. BTW, I don't like the flavored vodkas they taste....well, fake. Add your own juice.

Thanks Pam! I know I need to eat more but my stomach doesn't work like it should. A few years ago I could only eat 1 tbsp of peanut butte and 1/4 cup applesauce per day. I'm eating more and I do snack on veggies most of the day now but to actually sit down and have a meal is about once per day. Yesterday I didn't even sit down and eat, it was just a munch day. I wrote it all down and I shook my head. It wasn't much but it sure was a lot more than what I was able to eat before. The doctors understand this and my liver doctor really wants me to do something with my stomach issues.

I don't drink but I do know people who will buy their liquor from Ben's Liquors. People come from California to buy their liquor there. There's a store on the corner of 4th and Keystone. I have no idea how many it would cost. Some people say it's cheaper at Ben's then at Costco.

Elizabeth, I'm glad you were able to get the eggs last night. I know what it's like trying to find them after dark and it's not fun.

Sheryl,

I'm so sorry you have trouble with your digestion.

Have you tried yogurt? The only kind that is any good for you is the unsweetened plain. The sugars, once added to the yogurt to make it more like a dessert, actually kill the beneficials in there. I know it can be sour and hard to eat but the fresher it is, the less sour it is. Also, if you like sour cream on baked potatoes or omelets or whatever you can eat... on other foods, the yogurt tastes just like sour cream. You can't taste the sour at all.

I hope and pray you get better and are actually able to digest your food properly.
