Nevadans?

A couple more pics...

This is the Boa Constrictor. You have to crawl through these pipes, then come out in muddy water underneath barbed wire, then crawl through more pipes. Russ almost got stuck.

The last obstacle in the course, one of the two with live electrical wires. Of course, everyone was wet and muddy by then, too. Near the end of this obstacle, Russ got hit with a wire and his muscles locked up, and he did a face-plant in the mud.

Out of all the obstacles, the one where you go over logs, then under, then over then under... really winded him.

I'm not sure exactly what this one is called, maybe the Arctic Enema? I'm not sure. I took this from up on a ski lift.

This is the one where Russ just did a cannonball and swam across.

This one took teamwork. Big guys had to anchor the ropes down while others climbed. I was very glad to see the guys anchoring the ropes and letting the ladies just climb over.

Cannonball!

The barbed wire was MAYBE 24 inches above the ground.

Looks like you guys had a great time too. Missy you're beautiful!

Thank you!

Sweet pics y'all!!! Major congrats for completing such a difficult course!!!

Good news! Only one of the eggs left was viable. PHEW! No movement but we will see what's up with it tomorrow. Aye yee.

I'm doing a lot better, thanks. Things are clearing up and the s. boulardii probiotic is doing it's job and my digestive system is a-okay.
Good to hear!
Well I debated with myself on whether or not to tell you guys this, But I suppose in the long run it would be best anyhow.

I am now a closed flock. No more birds in and absolutely no birds out. Yesterday morning when i let the girls out i noticed more than a few were sneezing. Didnt think much of it as it is getting really dusty in there and its time for a coop clean out. However by last night when I went to lock everyone up all but maybe five or six birds were gurgling, gasping, and wheezing with nasal discharge. Ruby has a swollen eye. So this time it is actually real and I am certain they have caught something MAJOR. Spent 45 minutes last night administering Tylan50 injections to each bird. Today everyone seems okay but I understand the injections need to be done for five days to ensure they will work.

Fortunately Elizabeths birds have been separated so I can get them going on some preventative measures, unfortunately I cannot in good faith return them to prevent them from getting sick as they have been on my property. I am really sorry Elizabeth but I promise that they will be okay.

I have a few ideas of how this happened, but in the end it is truly my fault for getting too lax and not protecting my pets better. I am going to get them through this at any expense, and for the safetly of everyone elses birds I just ask that no one come by anymore. I would be devistated if it happened to anyone else.

That being said, I am really not that traumatized by the whole thing and the scare we had a few months ago actually prepared me mentally for something like this. Its made up my mind about my sultan breeding program which will not exist. I am looking to Missy for advice, and for some encouragement that eventually they will all feel better and go back to their happy bouncy selves.
I had my first scare with sickness this weekend too. One of my birds in quarantine started sounding raspy yesterday. Luckily I had some Sulmet on hand so I mixed it into their water and the bird sounds much better today. It did not have a nasal discharge or any swelling but now I don't know if I can add them to the rest of the flock after quarantine. I could put up a small coop way away from the others and keep them there. Jeez this sickness thing is scary but after reading about how other's birds got sick and recovered, I'm starting to feel like maybe it's a bit of an overreaction. After all nature still favors the strong and I'm really tired of stressing like this over every little thing! Then I hear of folks that lose their entire flock and think it's not silly at all. Ugh! Part of chicken keeping I guess.

I have taken to keeping bleach spray in my car and I spray the bottoms of my feet every time I leave someone's house that has chickens or I leave the feed store etc. Unfortunately this has made me realize that I have no idea when I might be walking where another chicken owner with an illness in their flock might have been. The grocery store? The drug store? A restaurant? I really can't be that vigilant!!! :( See why I'm tired of the stress?

I'm so glad I had the Sulmet though. I bought it a couple of months ago after I got the peachicks. A couple of them started to sound weird so I ran out and got the Sulmet but then after giving them 1 treatment I realized that they were not wheezing but cooing. Looked up more info on-line and yep, peafowl coo. Not like Doves but almost like a human making a cooing sound (if you ever watch those bird callers on TV you've heard the sound). I felt like an idiot panicking cause I thought the peachicks were sick when they were just getting their real voices but who knew?

Love the new setup Aubrey! It looks awesome!!! From what I've read, the birds that got sick before will be carriers forever so they can infect the rest of your flock at any time but the egg is not a carrier. Now I'm wondering if there is a vaccine for bronchitis? Missy is right it is the much more common of the respiratory diseases. Maybe the chicks can be vaccinated before they join the rest of the flock? IDK, like I said before, worrying too much about everything can get out of control quickly as well.

Did some more harvesting today. I got almost 15 lbs. of potatoes from just two plants!

Beauties, eh? Guess what I'll be having for dinner! And for dessert:

I've got two more like it that aren't quite ready yet. But this one smells wonderful - I can't wait to taste it!
Oh Man! That makes me really regret my failed garden this season. Beautiful!!!

They had a blast! It was tough but they had an awesome time. You can tell by these shots!
Very cute! lol

Loved your pics too Missy but I can't help but think "Whew! Better them than me!" hahaha

We had a super busy weekend this weekend. We have the 3 of our kids plus a significant other plus three grand kids coming this next weekend for the Alzheimers walk-a-thon and we had to get the peachicks into their new coop (phewee they stink at this age!!!!!). So we worked madly to finish it up and get them outside Friday and yesterday and they are really loving their new digs. *I've got to get more pics of them. They are getting their crests in and are so much bigger! Really beautiful birds!!!*
Anyway... today we got the puppy run almost completely finished and I got one of their new dog houses put together so they can start going outside during the day starting tomorrow.

Now I just need to get this whole house cleaned up and the carpets in the spare room (the peachicks old room) shampooed. ARRRGH! I am feeling more than a little rushed and can't figure out how I'm going to move all these boxes out of here with this crappy back of mine! *Sorry, just venting a little frustration. I know freaking out doesn't help a thing. What doesn't get done, doesn't get done. The kids will just have to deal with it.* We are looking forward to seeing them a lot!!! I love it when they visit. Just wish we'd had a little more time to get settled in before we had such a large group coming. :/

I know I asked this before but does anyone know of someone that does housecleaning in the area (actually I need someone that organizes more than someone that cleans, since Steve and I can clean once boxes are out of the way, but I'm not picky at this point)? I can't pay $50 an hour (unless they can do it all in 4 hours lol) but I can negotiate a fair price with them or maybe just a flat rate for the whole job. Let me know if any of you know somebody! Thanks! :)

Wow! Sounds like everyone had a busy weekend.

Ron - Awesome garden haul! Those potatoes look so delish!
Tough Mudders & support crews - Great Job! I agree with Sunny!
chicharomirinda & aubreynoramarie - Sorry about the crappy situations...sickness and lousy, nosy neighbors! But congrats on the coop redesign and the surprise chicks!
Sunny - Your right! We need pics! Don't worry too much if you don't get everything done. My mom always stresses out about having everything perfect for family...but family is really just there to spend time with you. They'd be just as happy if you were camping (probably) so it really isn't something you should wear yourself out with. Then you'll be too worn out and tired to have any fun with them. Just sayin'!
Missy - Thanks for the info about green apples...I have a source!
Seth - Again...if only I were closer I'd take you up on that. As is, I saw several trees in UT loaded with crabapples... I might be brave enough to volunteer to lighten their load. I do that every year here with pomegranates so what's the difference, right?

I posted about my weekend on the LV thread. Check it out! https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/666977/viva-las-vegas/200 I also want to know how to do that cool linking thing where you can just say HERE and have that be the link and not some long old http.....bleh!

ok I finally hung up two fly trap bags on Saturday and they really work. Laila said, Mom there are a million dead flies! One of the traps has a ton and the other only a few so I don't know if it was location or the brand of trap that made the difference.
Anyway, green apples are the best kind you can use for apple pie filling. You can make the filling then freeze it... just measure about how much you need for a pie, and put that amount in a freezer bag. Or a friend told me that she'll line a pie tin with plastic, freeze the filling in the tin, then take it out and wrap more plastic around it. That way, when she needs to bake a pie, she makes the crust then puts the frozen filling in the middle. There are also some really good canning recipes for pie filling.
sounds like a good idea, thanks! knew I could count on you to know what to do with them.

congrats to Russ on completing the tough mudder! I got claustrophobic just looking at those tubes.
Alrighty! The pen is finished! Finally! We also gave the girls a full coop cleanout. I mean i hosed that sucker down and everything in it. We hit the fresh bedding with dust for mites and rearranged it all to function best with our new pop door. Markie also built them a new perch for an added 5 or so feet. It looks really good! I took the advice about putting the feeder in the middle and also spread apart the waterers. Stacked the nest boxes and shazam, i think i have good function here!

the broodies really enjoy the new upper decker box!

and here is everyone last night on the new perches! They really like being up high. Love em!
your new layout looks good!

Good to hear!

I hope your birds are ok and nothing serious. It is pretty complicated. you want to do the right thing for the flock but it's hard to always know what that is. Hope you guys have a great time with family next weekend. I don't know anyone that organizes, though.

those are beautiful photos! sorry about your car trouble and not being able to get your chickens back yet.

Yep. That's what happens. I get so worn out that I don't have much energy left for the visit. The kids are used to our messes but our oldest son is bringing a new girlfriend up to meet us (a big deal since he hasn't had a relationship for a few years now) and I just hate for this mess of a house to be her first impression of us. You are still right though. It won't help anyone if I end up all wrung out and hurting.

Great pics! Sorry about your car and having to leave the chickens. That really stinks. I think we've all had a car like that at some point in our lives. Such a relief when you finally get rid of them though. haha

I'll get some more pics of the peachicks and puppies once I recover from this weekend. :D

LOL! Ron I think you need to post a tutorial for us tech wannabes! I'm not the only one that wants to learn how to do that short linking stuff!

Thanks I hope so too. I love these new birds already and would hate for anything to happen to them. Still I would hate to have anything happen to my existing flock too.

Vegaschick, thanks so much for the pictures on the other thread! Before I moved to Reno, I lived in Cedar City for a few years and worked for the Forest Service. We went everywhere... Duck Creek, Strawberry, Mammoth Cave, Navajo Lake... there were pine beetles already back then, and we were trying to mark the trees for the loggers to come get, before the beetles spread. It sounds like the beetles won. A few years ago, there was a major landslide on the road going up Cedar Mountain. My grandmother sent me pictures... it was insane. Entire chunks of pavement slid down the mountain. It was sad to see, since I went up that road every day to go to work up in the trees. My mother's side of the family has been in Cedar and Paragonah since pioneer times. My great-grandmother, before she died, lived almost all of her life in a house in Paragonah that her husband had built for her. It was one of those pink brick houses that you can still find there, made from the pink clay there. Their parents had crossed the plains in covered wagons, I believe. My mom was born in Cedar, and my first daughter is buried there. I haven't been back in years, and I know it's grown a lot since then. I used to walk from the park on Main St., all the way to the Walmart that used to be the very top end of the city... about 2 or 3 miles.

Ron - Awesome garden haul! Those potatoes look so delish!
Thanks! They were excellent - they have a creamy flesh like the red potatoes you get in the store.

It's probably the brand of flytrap Elizabeth. I can't see how location could make that big a difference. BTW that cantaloupe tasted sooo good! I ate half for desert last night and the other half I brought into work where it was a big hit this AM!

OK, by popular demand, here is how you make the "cool short links"
cool.png
. First, copy your long URL to the clipboard (highlight and press Control-C). Then, when you are in the editor, just highlight the word or words you want to be a link, and click the icon on the toolbar that looks like the earth with chains around it (probably a subliminial for how we are all slaves
lol.png
). On the Link Info tab, mouse into the box that says URL and paste in the long URL you copied earlier (Control-V). On the second tab, Target, click the dropdown and choose "New Window (_blank)" if you want the link to open in a new window instead of navigating away from the page they are on - very friendly for links in a blog like this!

If anyone needs me to clarify anything just let me know!
